I'm a bit surprised that the youth memories wasn't higher. It's not my usual cup of tea but I ended up so invested with the characters' lives, I thought it was fantastic.
Yes, I liked it too ; it is deserving much better than the other two Xiao Zhan forgettable dramas included in the list. The list reflects mostly bias, not quality and even number of views. I like Wu Lei but really, the tennis drama was rather average, not really that memorable. HL being brought down is crazy, especially with the double standard of appointing Zhao Lusi as Global ambassador for WeTV in the wake of its international success.
I was very pleased with the excellent and emotional acting in "A Journey to Love". I don't know if the voices were dubbed, but it was technically very well done. I was able to follow the Mandarin and the translations were better than most. I was impressed by the talented lead actor Liu Y, not only with his acting voice, but with his singing voice on the cover songs. I will later comment on the ending. Thanks Marcus for your hard work. It has helped me with my 10 year plan to understand Chinese media, dramas and also the language.

I do enjoy listening to your recommendations. My favourite at the moment is "The Hope" as I think this is an interesting series and sheds light on the problems in the education systems of many countries in south east Asia. Especially showing the class system in these countries that the young people are up against. Enlightening and enjoyable. Good cast too.

Hidden Love is my best pick for 2023 . I liked a few other modern dramas like Alliance , Meet Yourself and Youth Memories. ( Where Dreams Begin ) I dropped most dramas from Iqiyi,they all are in the same style with typical edgy plot. I dropped all costume dramas from Iqiyi - only hype and no content with very mediocre acting. Ancient Love Song is a good one ,that was the only exceptional one among costume dramas in 2023.

I was wondering where Hidden Love fell on in the ratings. Wow, it is rated quite low on Douban. I enjoyed Fake It. I also had expected The Knockout to rate higher. And did Alliance make it somewhere near Top 12? For this week, yes, I agree The Last Immortal will hold on to the #1 spot. I bawled my eyes out watching the last five episodes. Whew, still trying to get that show out of my head! Zhao Lu Si knocked it out of the ballpark for me for this drama. She never disappoints but I feel she really expanded her repertoire of cutesy sassy girls in this drama. I had seen her debut as the bad guy years ago and had wondered when she would go back to doing another flawed character like that. It would be great if Blossoms Shanghai comes on Netflix. Hi Tasha, Alliance has got a 6.1 from around 46,000 ratings at the moment. Did not really come close, which is kind of surprising because it was one of tencent's more popular dramas last year.
Hidden Love,GenZ etc were purposely brought down in Douban. There is a discussion ongoing currently about this ,that Zhao Lusi dramas are particularly targeted by many parties. Both these dramas got big awards . Same case for Alliance and Knockout. This is unbelievable. I could see some mediocre dramas in that list.
Hi 👋; Going backwards the ones I've watched: 12. Sunshine, 11. WDB, 9. IAN, 8. HV, 7. FITYMI, and 5. NBY. I also loved Hidden Love and was surprised it didn't make the top 12. My other top rated moderns were that, Under the Skin, The Forbidden Flower, Road Home, Fireworks of my Heart, and A Date With the Future. All of those dramas I rated 9 or 9.5. From the list up top only numbers 5 and 8 got a 9 or 9.5, the rest were 8.5 or lower. No perfect score on costume, republican, modern, youth, or other genres in 2023. My last drama of 2023 that I'm watching is The Mutations and that ends Sunday. Nothing from my 2024 watchlist has dropped yet, hopefully by Sunday or next week more will come or speak to me. Thanks!

Fiery romance category awards for me were in that order : Hidden Love, The Forbidden Flower, Hi Venus, Road Home - special mention to Provoke. Be Your Own Light was very good too, for me, in a different category. I wouldn't try to throw in together slice of life, crime, science fiction... just because they are not "costume". Would not pit Three Body against romance, and include in the same bag dramas like The Long Season and the Knockout. Which deserve laurels too.

Hidden love is really good and must watch. Those who sees it otherwise have misunderstood the plot and were influenced by bloggers who took the opportunity to talk bad about the drama. They seem to judge the drama the way a book is judged by its cover.

My favorite modern drama in 2023 was 'The Heart'. It did not make it on the list probably because not many people watch. It is well-written and well-acted (both leading and supporting roles) drama. Highly recommend it if you have not seen it.
I Am Nobody had me in a chokehold I loved it so much, I also enjoyed Sunshine By My Side, Hidden Love, and I also liked A Date with the Future....is that considered modern drama? there were also a few Youku and Tencent mini dramas that were really really good
Yes. Provoke among other ones (if not considered "costume" because it "minguo").... A Date with the future could have been better, I was disappointed by it in the end. I am Nobody was memorable; I did not get to watch Sunshine, but absolutely loved Hidden Love.

The Chinese film production machine never stops so we have "a new king" every month or so. An excellent drama is soon displaced by another of seeming equal "buzz". A word of caution however. Even excellent dramas are not created equal when it comes to here & now social relevance & impact. This applies, in my opinion, to The Hope (which has almost completed airing) and the new comer Blossoms Shanghai. The latter is undoubtedly an intriguing story but not as significant, in the absolute sense, in my modest opinion, to The Hope. The Hope treats of situations which mirror, I am sure, the real life experiences in the here & now (to various degrees) of the audience. Most importantly this drama timely reminds of the pivotal role played by teachers in the formation of each new generation, clearly illustrating that reducing Education to just another line of business can lead to dire results which no one can rectify.

I think Fearless Blood didn't make your 100k cut off but it a dark comedy Republican era wuxia with an all-star cast that is rated 7.9 on Douban. I liked the 3-Body books but I thought the drama was mind numbingly boring.

Just fyi, My Boss isn’t available on YOUKU app or its RUclips channel in the United States. I found My Boss on Linmon Pictures RUclips channel. From what I know is the Linmon produced this drama with YOUKU.
I'm going to be very interested in the rating for Blossoms Shanghai... It's the sort of drama the average Douban rater seems to love, and it's got Hu Ge in it....
Hidden love is really good and must watch. Those who sees it otherwise have misunderstood the plot and were influenced by bloggers who took the opportunity to talk bad about the drama. They seem to judge the drama the way a book is judged by its cover.

my fav modern drama in 2023 is the heart. I think the long season was a really beautiful drama but it was hard to rewatch.

My favorite modern drama in 2023 was 'The Heart'. It did not make it on the list probably because not many people watch. It is well-written and well-acted (both leading and supporting roles) drama. Highly recommend it if you have not seen it.

I Am Nobody had me in a chokehold I loved it so much, I also enjoyed Sunshine By My Side, Hidden Love, and I also liked A Date with the Future....is that considered modern drama? there were also a few Youku and Tencent mini dramas that were really really good
Yes. Provoke among other ones (if not considered "costume" because it "minguo").... A Date with the future could have been better, I was disappointed by it in the end.
I am Nobody was memorable; I did not get to watch Sunshine, but absolutely loved Hidden Love.
Shen Li was the 31st I thought? Fairy and Sword? Blossoms in America? Question is when will they be available to watch if anyone knows? Finished Fight Sphere 4/10 Last Immortal 5.5/10.

The Chinese film production machine never stops so we have "a new king" every month or so. An excellent drama is soon displaced by another of seeming equal "buzz". A word of caution however. Even excellent dramas are not created equal when it comes to here & now social relevance & impact. This applies, in my opinion, to The Hope (which has almost completed airing) and the new comer Blossoms Shanghai. The latter is undoubtedly an intriguing story but not as significant, in the absolute sense, in my modest opinion, to The Hope. The Hope treats of situations which mirror, I am sure, the real life experiences in the here & now (to various degrees) of the audience. Most importantly this drama timely reminds of the pivotal role played by teachers in the formation of each new generation, clearly illustrating that reducing Education to just another line of business can lead to dire results which no one can rectify.

Thanks for the list Marcus - my Top 3 modern dramas were The Long Season, The Knockout and Fearless Blood. I think Fearless Blood didn't make your 100k cut off but it a dark comedy Republican era wuxia with an all-star cast that is rated 7.9 on Douban. I liked the 3-Body books but I thought the drama was mind numbingly boring.

Sangue Jovem foi divertido e emocionante, com um bom final. Gostei muito dos caras com super poderes... Kk.
