  • TODAY I WANTED TO DISCUSS WHAT THE SPOONS THEORY IS, AND WHAT A “SPOONIE” IS. I HAVE USED THE TERM SPOONIE IN SOME OF MY POSTS, AND LOST OF YOU ARE CURISO TO KNOW WHAT IT IS. I USE IT AS ITS A METAPHOR TO DESCRIBE A CHRONICALLY ILL PERSON OR A PERSON WITH A DISABILITY. I HAVE INTERPRETED IT TO HOW I USE IT WHITH MY DISABILITY AND HAVE DEMONSTRATED IT BY USING BARBIES.
The Spoons Theroy was written and developed by Christine Miserandino. here video is here: • The Spoon Theory writt...

I prefer the 'chocolate button theory.' You eat one every time you use some energy for a task.. You never get tired of demonstrating it 😀

Lovely Gem! Oh my goodness you explained this brilliantly. I loved your demonstration with the spoons and realise I am definitely having a low/no spoon day! I’m currently in bed, having taken some very strong painkillers. As you know, I love Barbie and was an absolute stitches watching your Barbie story. I thought that Ariel was absolutely spot-on. It’s very frustrating when you want to have a full on life but you can’t. I hope that you will do something similar to this in the near future. Many thanks xx 💕

This video really helped explain what ‘Spoonies’ are, now I understand better how all of those people feel :) Spoons = Energy levels/tolerance

okay my husband and I were DYING laughing at the Barbie scenes... sooo funny. We both have chronic illnesses so between us we have enough spoons for 1 person. lol

I like the way you differentiated between low spoon days and feeling tired. There is a huge difference and that can be tricky for totally healthy and able bodied people to understand. I love the spoon theory as an explanation :)

    • @Wheelsnoheels
      @Wheelsnoheels  7 лет назад +3

Yes there is defo a difference. I’m so glad I found the spoons theory, as I don’t think people sometimes “get it!” Also it makes me realise it’s not just me. Life is extra physically demanding. Thanks for watching. X

This is such a good way to explain it other than using the spoon theory! Before I got ill I'd be like the second barbie, except instead of looking after kids I'd be getting up mucking out and riding a few horses, going to college etc and then out with my friends on an evening.
Now my horses are out at grass and I use all my spoons just to go and say hello to them, never mind riding!

I think this is a grate way to explain a chronic illness and disabilities. You can be limited and you do have to priorities things. You just don't have as many choices.

Great video. The spoon theory really helped my husband understand the chronic fatigue side of my disability 🙂
I also found the dodgy phone battery and charging cable analogy worked great with my older children as they know the horror of malfunctioning electronics 😂

I don't have a chronic illness, but I have cerebral palsy and this makes a lot of sense. Socialising with others often drains me of energy, and while I enjoy it I can usually only manage once or twice a month, unless it's with people I know very well. It can also be hard to get motivated for a shower when I literally cannot tell what other people smell like anyway.

Thanks for making this video. Managing day to day tasks can be very difficult when you have a disability or chronic illness. Sometimes you just run out of spoons and people don't always get it, especially if they try and help and you knock them back. (I'm thinking of occasions when people have said "oh it's OK, I'll pick you up so it's easier". Whilst it's a kind thought it doesn't always mean you have the spoons to socialise or maintain any sort of appearance).
There's also times you might be able to borrow a spoon or two by aggressive resting in the days leading up to something. But it's a risk, especially if you misjudge it. Borrowing from 'tomorrow' however is a big nooooo, early on in many people's lives with a disability or chronic illness before they've gotten to grips it's easy to fall into that trap.
    Have great holidays BTW!

Yes, the spoon theory makes sense! I didn't understand the reference before! I love this video and it is very helpful... But I had to laugh when Ariel said she hadn't slept well because her bed is hard plastic. No wonder she didn't sleep well! LOL

This is great, I’ve read about this a few times and it just makes so much sense. I have a disability and chronic illness and I really struggle with my spoons some days (actually make that most days). A while ago I was trying to explain it to someone but had real trouble thinking and the spoons turned into scoops, when I saw this title I immediately realised the mistake I had made and I had a little chuckle to myself.

I have a condition called Klippel-Trenauney syndrome, which is a fluctuating condition and causes a lot of pain, in recen't months is gotten much worse, I really connect with this idea of spoons. I really have to plan my day according to how many spoons I have. and I have been trying to learn how to conserve spoons (such as walking with a stick, sitting down etc)

I love the Barbie example it gets the message accross clearly this is how I a every day I have complex mental health and physical health conditions and I have to have carers twice per day and restbite twice per week I have 5 spoons per day but usually I use 2 spoons in the shower and even with a frame I use 3 spoons my carers are brillant
My spoons are okay when I'm laying on my bed

Thanks for bringing up this theory. I have Sclerosis Multiplexis, it's autoimmune. It's really hard, almost impossible to explain how I feel. Spoon theory is a little help. Sometimes I even use it to explaining my struggles to my doctor. Hugs and sorry for my English, it's not my native language. And best wishes!

I'm writing a blog post about the tasks being like a cup of tea and our abilities like a spoon made of honey. The honey dissolves with each task but we still enjoy the tea.
I'm not pushing my blog. so when I publish that post I won't post link here but perhaps you'd like me to email the article to you.
    Let me know.
Thank you again for what you do. It adds sweetness to my cup of tea.

I'm feeling frustrated because I explained the Spoon Theory to someone yesterday only to have them respond with: "Well, you just need to get BUSIER! That will solve all your problems with LOW ENERGY!" ARGH!!!!!!!! How can I GET BUSIER when I DON'T HAVE THE SPOONS?!?!?!?
