Ben I got this game brand new as an Christmas gift in December 1982. I remember playing it in 10th grade class all the time! Good to keep me entertained in early 80’s
I've got the Tandy branded version of this, that was called Ogre Eater - everything else was identical other than the Packri Monster name and the startup jingles.
Here's a little tip I picked up from another RUclipsr. Instead of painting the lines with a brush, you can use a silver Sharpie instead. I use it for the trim on model cars. Love the videoes
VFD displays are notorious for getting dimmer with age, one reason is the heater filaments get a build up of junk on them that reduces emission. The heaters can be somewhat rejuvenated by driving them hard enough to burn this off (just like a CRT rejuvenator) but this may be a little risky with an irreplaceable VFD.
I actually went into my history, did a search for 'Ben Heck' to only show all of Ben's vids that I have watched just to see if I had seen this one or not. Was about to skip over it myself thinking I had.
When I do thumbnails I have a layer that represents the red bar and the time, so I can make sure my design elements don't bump them. Every so often I forget to hide that layer when I export as JPG.
Pacman was originally going to be named Puckman, but the creator thought people would scratch and turn the P into an F. I cant imagine all the Puckery in this one...
The highlight of this past weekend was meeting Ben in person at VCFMW and being gifted the very version of Pancreas Monster featured here. Thank you, Ben!
I still have my original model. Played it a lot in the early 80's - they were simpler times :-) I did a short video on my channel. Still love how inventive these systems were to replicate the gameplay with so many limitations.
i really hate laptop manufacturers, because like you said storage and ram has gone down the toilet while prices sour in the past couple year. i have a laptop from 2010 that has more ram and storage than some new laptops today.
After I replied with my guesses, I came down here to find if anyone answered... I knew the other movie was "sci-fi", but couldn't remember it! One of those _"an as soon as I read it...."_ moments. lol
Seen that as well. I am surprised it worked at all. Not sure on how everthing is hooked up inside, was not checking for if the battery compartment was fully series or a hybrid of series/parallel.
Ben "comma" your commentary during your videos is brilliant, seeing a notification makes my day. I can't believe, ok I can, that after playing Pac Man since it's release it was this week when I found out the ghosts actually have different strategies. I think it was from an Ahoy video maybe, and now yours. Maybe why I'm crap at that game..
i've always wanted to fix the faded vfd displays of old, but I was a kid. and internet didn't exist yet so I couldn't find out where to get faded vfds fixed
That sounds like my Siberian Husky under-coat Reinforced Epoxy. hahaha (their under-coat is super-fine and floats on any semblance of air current or thermal updraft, exactly like cat hair does...... hmm that reminds me, I need to do the bi-annual clean out the hair from my PC's radiator!)
If you actually make a Clock Game, give it a really soviet Elektronika sounding name. Or, something based off a 90s actor, like Watch & Jim Carrey Carry
Crazy. Got one of those, too. Was too lazy to open and repair it. If THIS is Ben's procrastination job, I have no excuses left. Or maybe I just trick my brain into thinking your videos are my reality. That sounds like a good idea ...
maybe cover a flat surface with paint and press it to the screen as it has this risen elements so it would work like a stamp for the screen . A few touches and it would bring a nice contrast when silver/white
I use a soft cloth and silver polish (Brasso) to remove scratches on plastic. The best part is when the cloth and plastic surface getting hot because of friction. Result: Shiny, clear and scratch free plastic. Nice. If it is still not transparent enough, you can use silicone spray at the end. Result is fantastic.
Holy Shit dude. i had one of these when i was... 6? maybe 8? Recall me and my Grandparents going to a Stockyard/Sale type thing. and them getting me this. i think it was 2 Dollars? might have been 1. been so long can't recall tbh. but wow Long long time ago
12:26 Was it MFD, MF, or mF ? MFD / MF is the same as uF (microfarad) But mF is millifarad (1000 uF is 1 mF). 33 MF2 (is likely shorthand for 33.2 MF) So: 33 MF = 33 microfarad 33 mF = 33,000 microfarad This distinction is basically the same as mbps vs MBps (mega bits vs Mega bytes per second)
My cousin had this game, and I had "Attack! Mogura" ('mole' in Japanese); both games made by Bandai. Ironically (and I kid you not) I was just looking for Attack! Mogura last night on an auction site...couldn't find it though. By the way, the red dots are the power pellets. Eat them to make the Bogey's cowardly (doesn't bogey mean boogers in British English?)...eating bogeys...ahhh gotta love 1980's Japanese English...
Ben ought to take a game with a screen like, get rid of all the electronics except the screen and case and make his own game out of it with better sound and more rules to it.
Well akshually, IIRC in Pacman the red ghost goes directly at you, the pink ghost heads for a few block ahead of you, the blue ghost aims for the block opposite of the pink ghost from you (ie tries to do a pinch maneuver) and the orange ghost goes at you but retreats to its corner when it gets too close.
Bandai is biggest toy company in Japan, they own Gundam IP exclusively among many others. Until their merge with Namco their video game division mostly made games based on their owned properties.
Got one of these from a garage sale, broken, maybe in 2017 I guess. Travelled to beachside for the holiday with it, a soldering iron and my girlfriend. Managed to fix the thing ther but couldn't play with it a lot since the high pitched noise just left my gf totally crazy.
The best part of the Namco Bandai merger is that they not only own Pacman but Packri Monster as well
Weird way to write Pancreas Man
now they can make a cross over
It was the whole reason for the merger! Like how Disney spent $60 billion to make Fantastic Four.
@@goeland4585 stop making fun of packri monster, it is a huge favorite in japan
@@Walczyk ok
Ben I got this game brand new as an Christmas gift in December 1982. I remember playing it in 10th grade class all the time! Good to keep me entertained in early 80’s
Of course, now Bandai and Namco have merged, so this could be an official Pac-Man.
I wasn't mentally prepared for the 100% original theme song for Pancreas Monster
love seeing all the tips and tricks and trade products you've amassed over the years to do this stuff
I feel so dumb!
I got this for Christmas in 1982 or 83. It was the Radio Shack version called Hungry Monster.
Yes!! That’s the name. I had the Tandy one too same exact game different name.
That red bar at the bottom of the thumbnail got me like... "Wait, I don't remember watching this" *facepalm*
Yeah, I almost skipped over the video at first because of the red bar.
Ha gat'm
I actually went into my history, did a search for 'Ben Heck' to only show all of Ben's vids that I have watched just to see if I had seen this one or not. Was about to skip over it myself thinking I had.
@@ray73864 Did the same, XD

I had one as a kid. I think i got it from radio shack. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane!
"What causes him to be edible?!" Oh yeah, isn't Ben partially colorblind?
and it does not help to yell red dot at the screen.
Wait, Ben likes home remodeling!? Waiting to see a retro interior decor.
Look for save table
Came for the refurb stayed for The Room references haha
This was Tandy's 'Ogre Eater' in the UK. Gobble or be Gobbled... and they used that weird 'Bogey' name for the ghosts on that version too.
I instantly recognised it as a Tandy, couldn't remember the name, but I remember my dad having one, and the polystyrene packaging it came in.
Ironic that Bandai now is Bandai-Namco and they have retroactively pirated their own Pacman trademark.
Pacman was originally going to be named Puckman, but the creator thought people would scratch and turn the P into an F. I cant imagine all the Puckery in this one...
I've seen the MF capacitor marking mainly in stuff from the '70s or earlier.
Got this when I was young, and played it for hours at a time. For 1981 this was quality handheld gaming.
This is amazing. I have a soft spot in my heart for VFDs, especially custom ones like this.
The highlight of this past weekend was meeting Ben in person at VCFMW and being gifted the very version of Pancreas Monster featured here. Thank you, Ben!
"Pancreas Monster" - love it!!!
5:20 lol it even has a knock off Pac-Man startup sound!
Sadly baileys irish cream creamer you can't find anymore. But I hear Canada still has them.
The saddest thing in the story of Pancreas Monster: It's STILL a better version of Pac-Man then the official Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man!
How did I know "beer" was going to be first on your list of "Things Ben Likes" But, I admit "home remodeling" came out of left field
Pakuri means knock-off in Japanese, so I think there's a pun in that name.
He exists now only in my memory..... That's old rose from titanic talking about Jack right?
😂😂
The fact that you just said nipple so many times in a row is why I love this channel xD
Ha! Very cool! Imagine owning this in 1981... Amazing. Nice restore work too!
What, no Bud in this episode!? 🙁
I still have my original model. Played it a lot in the early 80's - they were simpler times :-) I did a short video on my channel. Still love how inventive these systems were to replicate the gameplay with so many limitations.
I was born in 81 . We had cool stuff back then like pancreas monster
Ben and Weird Al really love their pancreas.
Now, why does YT slap the game ad for "Redneck Rampage" on this video?
I forgot he can't see the read and green colors so he doesn't know he ate the red dot.
Oh I was wondering about that ! I was thinking the guy never played pacman ! hahahah
i really hate laptop manufacturers, because like you said storage and ram has gone down the toilet while prices sour in the past couple year. i have a laptop from 2010 that has more ram and storage than some new laptops today.
Well my Surface Book was very expensive when I bought it. Still that was 6 years ago? You'd think RAM and SSD would be cheaper now but noooooo
"Defense" (right) contractors are currently eating up all of the supply.
For 81 this is one awesome little game! Nice job Ben!
Pancreas Monster sounds like a ZX Spectrum game that Ashens would have covered in one of his books!
"He exists now only in my memory" is from the titanic movie... and the road warrior, I think...
Fight Club?
Correct!
After I replied with my guesses, I came down here to find if anyone answered... I knew the other movie was "sci-fi", but couldn't remember it!
One of those _"an as soon as I read it...."_ moments. lol
“What DO you care about, Ben?” Labyrinth. You care about Labyrinth.
I personally don't. But it came up a lot during the shows days as it was Alyson's favorite "American" movie.
@@BenHeckHacks LMAO! You quote Labyrinth so often that I had to sit down and watch it last week :P
Is it f*ing Christmas? So many Videos back to back ? Love your content Ben 👌
I can't believe there was no vocal impression when Retrobrite was mentioned.
Why is one of the batteries inserted backwards? Perhaps the screen would be brighter if they were all facing the right way?
Seen that as well. I am surprised it worked at all. Not sure on how everthing is hooked up inside, was not checking for if the battery compartment was fully series or a hybrid of series/parallel.
@@Kara_Kay_Eschel It's fully series. There's a point at which the embossed layout diagram in the compartment is clearly visible.

The genius of this name is that the "packri" from the name comes from "pakkuri" which usually means "ripoff" so it's kind of on the nose.
It's not DIABEATUS
it's,
PaNcReAs MoNsTeR!
You are the electromagnetic waves emanating from the closest star intersecting with my primary circulatory organ
Novus 1 is basically windex but without blue dye in it. (The blue dye can discolor crap which is why pinball owners hate using Windex)
Ben cares about Bud. Because Bud is a very good boy (even when he is being bad).
friends don't let friends buy squantch soap while drunk. Bad Ben. resist the commercials. Smells like tang and cancer.
Does anyone else remembered WildTangent's pacman playalike called Pig Pen? It was so charmingly weird.
Mad Max beyond Thunderdome and Titanic
close, IIRC it is Road Warrior though
