I have a similar problem with my A5, it won't go into gear when it's cold outside. It goes into gear when engine is off without needing to press the clutch, but once the engine is running and it's cold, it won't go into gear from the first try. It has a lot of resistance but if I try for a second time it goes without any problem, only the first time it's doing this. Basically, I hold the clutch to the ground, try to get it into 1st gear for the first time, it won't let me, I put it into neutral (with clutch still pressed), and try again and it works. If I release the clutch and try again, it won't let me. What do you think it might cause this? Also, the oil is new, I changed it 12k km ago.

Let me tell you a funny story.. so I had the problem with it getting into gear. When i took it to the shop to have a clutch put in, turns out there was a gaping hole inside the bell housing leaking gear oil on the clutch assembly making it to where it wouldn't disengage correctly. Basically, near 300k miles on my jetta, the transmission had a gear fall off the shaft and poke a hole in the bell housing. Sooooo.... 3300 dollars later (still paying) brand new flywheel, clutch, and USED transmission at only 150k miles. So hopefully when I get the car back, I'll get another 200k miles out of this one. And, I'll change my own gear oil, because its quite easy on a vw for my particular year and engine combo. I'm excited to get my car back! One more thing.. goal is to get it to a million miles. So.. I'm a third of the way THERE! Almost. 293714 to be exact..
Yeah I definitely could have elaborated but I think my intentions on that video was just to help isolate if the issue was with the clutch, transmission or hydraulics, when I have a manual trans apart next I’ll try to make a video about diagnosing mechanical transmission issues

@bethalpha hmm I wish I could help, I’m really not sure about that one
I think my 2nd gear synchro is going out it works fine just when I try doing a pull and banging into 2nd it locks me out or grinds
Sounds like classic synchro failure
Rhanks bro it helped
I have issues shifting into first gear while car is moving. When car is idle there no issue
Sounds like a likely first gear syncronizer issue
What If I can’t get into gear while the car is off ? With clutch pedal resistance
Possible mechanical problem with transmission or shift linkage
Yes thanks
That’s a weird one! I think she’ll make it!
@@EuropeanAutoRepair it could've been because i downshifted on the hwy to go faster in third and must've redlined or put too much stress on her.
Thank you
So you didnt mention anything about synchros?
Yeah I definitely could have elaborated but I think my intentions on that video was just to help isolate if the issue was with the clutch, transmission or hydraulics, when I have a manual trans apart next I’ll try to make a video about diagnosing mechanical transmission issues
@@EuropeanAutoRepair alright, would be awesome!
@@KristjanLovesCars thanks man. I appreciate the idea
Ty
I am having the exact issue at the moment with my car. When the car is off the shifting is smooth and normal and as soon as it is ignition then very hard to shift.
Showed to a mechanic but not sure... Says probably clutch worn out.
If you could please advise.. thank you
Clutch being worn sounds like a likely cause of the problem you describe,
@@EuropeanAutoRepair thank you and I ll go with the replacement of the clutch set
شكرا
Alright so the clutch kit it is… god damn it, the most expensive option
Sorry man
What’s it mean if you can shift through all gears with the vehicle running without clutch and it still won’t move?… 😢😂
Usually that the clutch material has completely blown off the clutch disk
What if the engine runs but the transmission does not engage at all?
If you see no hydraulic leaks it's likely a mechanical problem with clutch
Cool. You helped me find out I'm dealing with an issue with the shift linkage.
I can ONLY shift into 1st & 5th when my car is off.

Hey man, I’m Brayden from Australia I have a problem with 4x4 it has a concentric slave cylinder as the throw out bearing I can select any gears at all when the cars running but once she’s turned off I can select all gears ps I just out a brand new clutch in no kms on it at all
