As far as advice goes...hmm. Well, there are no shops in the game; gold only determines the quality of your gravestone when you die. The elemental rings only exist to be thrown at enemies. Good luck DC! Don't let the labyrinth (or the music) break your spirits!
As huge into classic gaming as I am, I legit had NO IDEA there was a Roguelike/Mystery Dungeon-style game on the Genesis. For over a decade you've managed to pull the surprises on me, DC! I definitely need to give this one a look.
advice: 1: yes, use the doorways/hallways to prevent flanking. Baiting enemies and waiting for your opportunity is key in roguelites. If necessary turn corners to prevent being put to sleep from afar while dealing with tougher enemies 2: equipping a bow unequipped your shield and also lowers your armor score on its own. Don't do it if you can avoid it 3: I could only find one music remix. But enjoy: ruclips.net/video/xmw8JfZd5oM/видео.html
I would recommend running along the "bottom" of every room to reveal if there is an unblocked doorway there. Unlike the other 3 sides, the bottom won't reveal a passage unless you're right by it. Also check all the walls for secret doors. Some lead to side paths with no connection back to the main route.
As anyone who has seen the combat log of a Dwarf Fortress tantrum will tell you, Anything is a weapon when propelled with sufficient force. Save your trash to use as projectiles.
Yeah I find the level-up names great too. Although they seen to escalate quite quickly. Beginner-Valet-Ranger- _Leader_? What's next... Master, Overlord, Legend, Deity?
If I recall correctly, they're references to the job names from D&D classes... I think it was in 1.0 where they used those. None of those actually used this as a title chain, but it's silly regardless.
DC because of using your Bow you have unequiped your Shield.

Man, the realization that Toejam and Earl is a Roguelike blew my mind!
There are a lot more people in this comment section who know this game intimately than i expected.
The flame, blizzard, and lightning rings are grenades. They do damage when you throw them.

Magician: are you selling girl scout cookies?
Adventurer: I am selling you SWORD TO THE FACE
Magician: AAAA NO SOLICITORS

Wall Meat we don't need no stinking Wall Meat we got Floor Meat HERE!!
The music really is the best part of this game. It has that great funky bassline.

Hey friend.
I think you unequiped your shield when you equiped the 2-handed bow.
>DC Unequips shield
>DC begins dying
DC, your rings wear out over time... You actually very much want redundant rings.
What I want is what you want if you see somebody who will save the world.

How many leather shields do I have? Too many!
>Doesn't have one equipped
> Magician casts Roof Raise!
Magicians, huh? Use the Fistmira spell!
Tojam and Earl are a pretty cool rougelike, shame about the current people who own the series.
DC, the various elemental rings damage enemies when thrown. Here's a wiki: strategywiki.org/wiki/Fatal_Labyrinth/Magic_items
How many levels is this?
30 floors
Magicians in 2024 still be like

Yup, 1st Ed had all these fancy terms for levels.
Imagine thinking DC hacking in a game. Couldn't be me
Apparently DC just forgets that shields are a thing recently
