And just to make the number with distances sound impressive she's using metres instead of kilometres. And that's' the first time I ever heard about a hay bale in a cab.

These are old statutes never removed from the original laws. The hay bale is legit. It was an early attempt at ensuring quality of life for horses working when drawing the horse drawn cabs of the early days. The hot pants sound like a local issue. It was also not claimed to be an Australia wide law. It is in fact against the law in Queensland to use tarot cards to "read someone's fortune" (or fortune telling) but anyone doing this activity can get around that law by getting the customer to pay for a cup of tea or coffee and some cookies (biscuits) or cake; so essentially one can go to a cafe like place, order some rather expensive tea and cake, and have one's cards read.

Re:13 - You'd be surprised how many foreigners think Australia is small. An unfair proportion of them are American, I'm sorry to say. I was in a taxi once and the driver told me about how he used to drive taxis in Sydney. He was parked at a rank, waiting for a customer, when a group of people - an American family of 2 adults and a couple of kids - rode up alongside him on pushbikes. They stopped and asked him how much further they had to go to get to the Gold Coast. He could see they weren't packed or dressed for the epic odyssey that would be and asked them what they meant? They said they were riding up to the Gold Coast for lunch then would ride back to their hotel for dinner. The taxi driver, being Austrailan, told them it wasn't much further so they thanked him and rode on. He didn't find out how far they got before realising the gravity of their mistake and I personally think it was cruel not to tell them since kids were involved but I hope they didn't get too sunburnt and exhausted before giving up.
There is also no current law about having to carry hay in a taxi - that's insane. Where would we put our groceries and lugguage? It dates back to when transport was horse-drawn and it was meant to ensure that horses were properly fed while working.The pink hotpants thing is either some very niche local council by-law that no one has heard of or it's made up. I'm going with "made up".

The easiest way to explain it is to tell them it's slightly larger than the lower 48 United States, we're the same width as New York to L.A.

The "hay bale in a taxi" law was repealed in 1980. It was a hangover from the horse-drawn cart days in Victoria and nobody ever bothered repealing it when horses and carts were superseded by motor vehicles!
I believe horse drawn carts carrying passengers in those days were also called Cabs or Taxis

Yeah ... but we have a lot more beaches to choose from. You're also talking about the country that EXPORTS SAND TO SAUDI ARABIA ... that fact alone should explain how good our beaches are. As an example the longest sand beach in USA is the South Padre Island, Texas, at 35 miles (57km) of unbroken sand ... I grew up a short distance from the 90 mile beach in south east Victoria (which is actually 83 miles (134km) of unbroken sand, but 111miles (177km) total with the artificial entrance at Lakes Entrance spoiling things), but the Coorong Beach in South Australia has that well beaten at 129 miles (207km) of unbroken sand (223km total). (The Victorian Lakes ORIGINALLY had a narrow inlet/outlet to the ocean to flush excess water, and it allowed smaller vessels to access the lakes, but in 1869 a permanent entrance was created in its current location to allow large oceangoing vessels to access the waterways, and it's been constantly dredged of sand buildup to keep it open ever since.)
When I lived in Europe people would often ask me if I knew their relatives back in Australia, like we all lived in the same suburb. It might look close on a distorted mercator map, Perth (in Western Australia) is 2hrs behind the Eastern States. The UK is only 1hr behind continental Europe. Also, wombats can be huge and can run like crazy. Drop bears a real. Tourists be very afraid!

As a girl from Melbourne I'm glad she mentioned the rarely seen, but extremely dangerous Drop Bear. Some people like @Ryan Kincade below try to downgrade their danger or pretend they don't even exist (I know tourists may be put off) but as long as they are careful and heed the warning signs they will be fine.
The law thing regularly pops up in these. They are mostly very old laws that just haven't been removed but are ignored and obsolete. Eg a taxi cab use to be horse drawn and you had to have hay to feed the horse.

Some accurate facts like the dingo fence being 5600 kms (3450 miles). 1 mile is 1.62 kms. The Indian Pacific train travels across the width of the country from Sydney to Perth. Takes about 4 or 5 days. The Nullarbor plains has the straightest road in the world (Google). Runs on The Eyre Highway between Ceduna and Perth. 90 miles of 1200 miles.The Ghan is another tourist train that runs from Adelaide in the south to Darwin in the north. 3 days.

Didn't really explain the stingers well (blue ring octopus). They only live in tropical waters from mid spring to late fall. See green section on map here or 1400 miles Great Barrier Reef running down the north and central Queensland coast. They're not everywhere there.
Australia is a developed western country. More conservative in the south (Melbourne,Adelaide,Perth). More liberal in Sydney and Queensland well is Queensland. Can't say it's your Tennessee but get my drift. It's a big State so varies a hell of a lot from Brisbane which is very cosmopolitan to the tropical north where it's more than laid back (it's so hot you have to be!).

You really need at least 2 weeks to see the country. I recommend Uluru,Sydney,Melbourne,Cairns (Barrier Reef,rainforests,croc tours),Kakadu,Litchfield National Park (3 hours east and 1 hour south of Darwin in the north). 2 to 3 days in each but really depends on what you want to see and do. Best time on the east coast is October (Sydney,Brisbane,Cairns). March and April in the south (Melbourne,Adelaide,Perth). It can be still quite cool and cloudy in mid spring in the south but get some nice sunny mild to warm days.
It is hot in the red centre (Uluru) from September (early spring) to April (mid Autumn (fall)). Uluru is really unique. 11 km around and very different from the tourist pics. Interesting formations. No longer can climb The Rock as it's on Indigenous land.
Summer is generally quite hot through the country but Melbourne and Adelaide has good warm days but also blistering 105F heatwaves. Why suggest March,April. Very hot and humid from SE Queensland north.

The Bob hawk longest serving PM fact is complete rubbish. He was third longest, only 8 years. Sir Robert Menzies 18 years and John Howard second with 11 years.
the longest golf course is a tourist thing. They basically take a couple of holes from a line of golf courses stretching across the bottom of Australia and call it a 'gold course'. So you play one or two holes, drive for a few hours, then play the next one, and so on.
I worked with a man ,originally from England. He told me he had just gotten a phone call from his brother who flown into Melbourne on business, he still lived in England. He asked my friend if they could meet for lunch. My friend was a bit confused, we live on the north coast of NSW ,at least 2 connecting flights away not to mention availability of said flights and other factors. His brother had no idea the distances involved. My sisters friend at family from Sweden holidaying in Cairns, they were going the ride the push bikes to have afternoon tea. Usually takes 2 to 3 days by car!
Personally, as an Aussie, if I meet someone from another country, whether it be America or England or Scotland or one of the European countries, I give them a big Aussie "G'day" and will talk with them, no matter what

Yes, we carry hay bales in cars all the time. Taxis are the only ones required by law, but we all tend to do it anyway. It’s frowned upon if you don’t.

11:45 Riversleigh in Queensland; I went to high school with a girl who married into that family; before they discovered all the dinosaur bones on their property. Years later, when I married, I met the people who owned Riversleigh (the parents of the son - or one of their sons - who married the school friend) at my new husband's parent's house. Obviously, we talked about dinosaur findings. They basically excavated to build some dams, and found a treasure trove of dinosaur remains. At that particular time, they were having trouble getting anyone interested in their finds, but luckily they left those areas undeveloped and put the dams elsewhere. It is now famous.

The taxi/bale of hay thing is a throwback to the old horse-drawn taxis of the 19th and very early 20th centuries. It was a law designed to ensure that the horses had food to eat. Quite ahead of its time if you think about it. Of course, this is not enforced. Anyway, I am aware this law used to apply to horse-drawn "Hackney Carriages" in England so I'm not sure this is even a thing here.
1/ drop bears aren't a threat (they don't exist). 2/ Haybale law is not enforced at all. 3/typical non-metric user usage of metric units. Yanks would not talk about distances like 400,000 yards or 200,000 feet. 4/ Bob hawke was never the longest PM

Emus can't walk backwards because their knees bend backwards and I don't think kangaroos can move their hind feet separate from each other so they can't take steps, so they can't walk backwards.

I would say ,come and visit Perth in Western Australia and see the place and the potential lifestyle it can give...Yes Western Australia is not the cheapest place to live but there are opportunities for work that would give you a different perspective..
I'm from Perth originally, born and raised there for 30 years. Moved to Sydney and been here 20 years. Sydney is by far the most expensive city in Australia, which is not a good thing.
People definitely think it’s small. I’ve come to the US & Europe and people say they want to come for a week and drive around the country.

The Hay in the boot draws back to the Horse and Cart day's. It was food for the animals as they worked long hours so there were a ready suppy of food for them. To day it's represented by a box or Gas (LPG) Tank as some Taxis run on LPG. Hence forth Food for the Animal.

The hay in the trunk and the hot pants thing are probably old British laws we inherited. They are certainly not enforced and no one here in Aus probably ever heard of them either. BUT one law we do have us that on Anzac Day it is the only time that betting in public is legal everywhere only after mid day playing a game called “Two Up”. The town of Kalgoorlie has the only sanctioned place in the nation where two up can be played legally every day of the year.

Wombats can be quite big. They have a bony plate on their rump, which protects it from predators as it heads into its burrow. Their pouch is backwards…opens to the rear…so the pouch doesn’t fill with dirt when it’s digging. Oh, and hit one with your car, a wombat is pretty solid.

There is no hay in the boot of taxis, no such things as drop bears, Hawke was not the longest serving PM, it is not illegal to sing obscene songs out loud, etc, etc, etc
The Law of Taxi requiring a bale of hay is an old law dating back to horse drawn Carriages when a Taxi would be required to carry food for the horse - this was partially due to the long distances they would sometimes have to travel. This is also the same as a law that all pubs have to have a trough of water out the front of the building, for the same reason. These are old laws that just have never been removed and are not upheld - but in theory could be as they are still Laws.
No taxi cabs no longer carry hay, that law was written for horse drawn taxi cabs, they had to carry a bale of hay and 30 litres of water, this was due to the risk of becoming stranded in the middle of no where and being able to provide for the horses basic needs until help arrives.

im an aussie, ive never herd of the taxis must have a bal of hay in their boot before now. ive taken taxis many times ive never seen any hay. its likely one of those laws that existed for a reason once upon a time like when everyone used horse and carts, that no one bothered to change when cars became a thing
Wombats have been known to total cars. They have this plate in their backs and they can really f up your vehicle. Even if it’s a raised Ute it can still total it.
