Visit www.PianoManChuck.com for great prices on iLoud monitors and more!
IMPORTANT: Keep in mind that what you're hearing on your system will NOT properly convey what you'd hear when you listen to these in person! Most people listen to RUclips videos with their home/computer setup (or even their smartphones or tablets!) which cannot reproduce what an "in person" listening experience can. Even if you had a much better sound system set when watching this, that will help, but keep in mind that RUclips does not keep the same audio quality in their videos that the original recording had.
That said, you should definitely hear some differences but the best bet is to get to your local retailer to hear them for yourself!
The audio from the iLoud's was recorded with a matched pair of Rode M5 microphones.
MTMs sound great...but for the price difference you'd reasonably expect some improvement over the micro's...had my micro's for about a year now and they still sound wonderful!...great comparison.
Great, rich, and thoughtful comparison between these 2 sets! Thanks Chuck for your extended test. Before this I thought the advantage on size would put MM prior but after watching this test I might need to change my mind. MTM just sound notably better.
I listen with my headphones and the difference is pretty huge. In your other videos the Micro didn't sound too bad, but the MTM is way more open in this video and made the Micro sound almost inadequate.
Listening to the comparison on my Beyerdynamic 1770 pro and the difference is huge. Someone said the MTMs make the Micros sound "boxed." That kind of nails it for me
I'm using the same headphones, and the difference is very clear.
So MTM is better than micro?
@@frattuncbas I think the Micros are outstanding when it comes to a portable and lightweight pair of speakers. I am using them for portability on the road but also along with my Neumann KH120a. They offer me a different perspective. I wouldn't call them generally boxy but it's easier to make a mix sound boxy on them, i have the feeling that this can be good thing because if i have too much energy in the low end and uppermids sometimes i found it actually easier to identify those mixing issues on the iLoud than on larger speakers. Everything i mixed on them translates well to my larger speakers while this isn't the case the other way. Btw. No speaker should be placed directly on the desk this makes almost everything sounding boxy.
I was at a loss about the choice between these two models.
It was much easier to understand than other videos and was very helpful.
I also listen to the sounds of keyboard synthesizers, music players, PCs, etc. I want to be an MTM.
Thank you very much.
I find the MTMs sound open and clearer than the Micros. The sound of the Micros is a little bass-style and pressed, but still sounds very good!
I was listening to this video through my PreSonus Eris E66 MTM speakers I bought from you. Funny thing is, the micromonitors sounded like speakers picked up on a microphone, but when you switched to the iLoud MTMs, they sounded like my E66 MTM's where playing the sound natively (relatively). The iLouds had that same excellent clarity and imaging I was so surprised about when I first hooked up the E66's. But it was almost as if the iLouds where actually in MY room. The MicroMonitors, although great monitors for the money, where not anywhere near as clear and crisp. I am impressed with the MTM design, be it an iLoud or the PreSonus E66.
I guess it also makes the point, your microphone setup for these A/B tests is very good.
Thank you for sharing that Michael. Unfortunately, the majority of viewers are listening to the audio on cheap computer monitors or even on their tablets, so they won't be able to discern what you've just described.
To all reading this, the next time you're somewhere with a good speaker system, come back and rewatch for an eye-opening experience!!
Please Chuck continues to make these comparisons, although we hear it in poor quality speakers for me have been extremely useful comparisons.
Really good review! I head it through my JBL 308, and can hear the MTMs sound more open, but the micros sound pretty decent too for their size.
308's are better no?
@@JustinMurray170fin 308s are a muddy mess
@@abcwow2400 How far then would the JBL 310 sub help with cleaning that up - Have you the 308s?
Appreciate your response, that you.
Not sure if you'll get this, as it appears as tho the initial comment has been deleted, but it may appear here...
The MTM’s are so open but that bass on the micros is nice. Solid equipment.
Chuck this is a wonderful review-comparison...well done mate!!!
Thank you kindly!
Thank you for such a great comparison video. You helped me make the decision on going with the MTMs. That low end and spacious soundstage are just such an upgrade. I also can't get the lead of the track at @19:20 out of my head. Thanks again!
First vid I have watched on your YT channel and I really appreciate your thoughtful and thorough review comparing these monitors. I have just recently picked up a pair of the MM speakers and your mic set up really made the difference between them and the MTMs clear. I like that I can put the MMs, a laptop and an audio interface all in a backpack for mixing and monitoring on the go. The MTMs would certainly make for better listening in a permanent setup. That being said, I do have a question for you: if you used the MMs while mixing or mastering do you think you'd wind up with an inferior end product as compared to the mix you made with the MTMs? We can't control what speakers listeners listen to our music on but we want our mixes to sound good regardless. I wonder if the more contained sound stage of the MMs might push me to create a more spacious mix than I would on the MTMs. I'd love to hear your feedback on this! Anyway, thanks again for the great review and I look forward to checking out your other YT content. 👍
I was looking for a speaker for my new numa x piano and was excited to see pianomanchuck reviewing these small speakers as I have very limited space on my desk, but the piano part was very short 😢 very difficult to say if the mtm made a difference. Anyways, thanks for the video
It is possible to mod MM to sound much more open. When I bought them, I did not like this closed-in feel so I did 3 things: 1) changed inner damping to wool, 2) damped walls inside the housing with Butyl noise insulation used for cars, and 3) removed plastic protection plate with grills from the front of the speaker. All of this mods are reversible, and relatively easy to do. Now I feel the sound is really opens up, and really close to MTMs
How did you opened the Micros didn't you damage the front face plate?
Nice demo, but I couldn't hear the difference on my very old, fairly cheap Cambridge SoundWorks computer speakers. I guess I should have a pair of MicroMonitors or Vanatoo O's to demo them with! But I really dug your original tunes.
Great review as always Chuck! Was there significantly less white noise with the MTM compared to the Micro's in your opinion? This was an issue for me with the iloud micro. Thanks.
Thanks, Chuck! I may have to grab those minis!
Listened through a pair of Dynaudio speakers, showing I already have an appreciation for smaller sized speakers that sound much larger. Your comparison just got me to buy a pair of iLoud minis. That is a whole lot of bang in a small speaker for the buck. Having a speaker of the mini's size will be handy in probably ways I don't even anticipate. The MTM's sound great, yes. Being the newer model, I see they are more widely available without resorting to E-bay. I'll probably pick up a pair of the MTMs at some point also. I actually find the quality of the sound coming from the iLoud minis to be more astonishing than when the size of the enclosure creeps up with another driver added, plus more power in the MTMs. The minis are something special. -Chris
Hi Chuck, great channel you have, really appreciate your dedication to helping others online. My question, if i may, i was thinking about the mtm's or jbl 305p to have to play my kawai es920 through at home. I actually really like the built in speakers on the es920 so I would be looking to just improve my playing experience more with some proper speakers maybe. I don't know if mtm would be too flat and actually not fun or enjoyable to listen to, i had yamaha hs7 and hated them, ear fatigue and too mid range, too harsh and not fun at all. Maybe I prefer hi fi sound and jbl would be best choice for me, i could also buy lsr310 sub woofer but i feel mtm smaller footprint in my untreated living room. What would you go for please? Are the mtm enjoyable to listen to regular music through or are they just for mixing purposes, i know some people have bought them for their digital pianos.
The Micros were already brilliant. They ate Genelec 8020 for breakfast and then some. No need for the MTMs though, sound almost the same, tale up way much more space, cost the double.
Thanks for the review. Havent been able to go to the music store to hear these lately. I like the MTM's So good to see a video about it. thanks :)
ps... I do like when you just pointed to the speaker, great idea. :) because it was less of a distraction. good work :)
Thanks for great review! Loved your Jazzamatazz tune!
I can hear some nice samples 11:47, 17:53. Do you have complete music with them? This one 20:32 is really good. Enjoyed the full track :)
Thank you. I wrote all of those. Here's a link to the (unlisted) playlist that contains those and other songs. Enjoy!

thank you for great review and comparing Xx
Really honest video, preorder Micro ilouds as has problems with space and acoustics
The MTMs make the MicroMonitors sound 'boxed'.
Excellent comparison - thanks !
interesting how it's actually really useful hearing recordings of speakers, but only when you're A/B-ing like this
I run a pair of iLoud Micro's alongside my Kali In-5's and it's a fantastic combination. 😎
Sounds great!
i love how you love the music. happy day mi friend
Thanks for visiting!!
thank you so much for this great video Chuck!!
Very welcome
Excellent comparison thank you
comparing the Micro Monitors directly to the MTMs is a bit an apples/oranges comparison. For the size AND price increase of the MTMs over the Micros (2-3 times larger and 2-3 times more expensive) I would be HIGHLY disappointed if they wouldn't perform better by any means.
A real comparison for the MTMs would be some other brand monitors in the same price range or more expensive - but with similar size - and how they stack up against those.
The Micro Monitors play in their own league in my opinion - because they are all about SIZE. Ultra compact portable/mobile monitors that can still give you a representative playback of what you're working on or playing. I really don't know any other monitors that are THAT small and still produce such a good sound.
So if you work stationary and want the higher sound quality - buy the MTMs.
If you want something ultra packable - buy the Micros.
I have the Micros as additional speakers for lugging around - using it with my iPad and Laptop - and really love them. So worth it.
This video (iLoud MTM vs MicroMonitors) was produced due to extremely popular demand (despite the size/cost difference).
I compare the iLoud MTM's against the PreSonus Eris E66's (another MTM design, similar price) in this video: ruclips.net/video/sTAHodk3Z80/видео.html
Great video thanks for making this :)
Thank you for your in depth review.
Thank You for a review! Very informative and interesting video.
Interesting comparison, however, I would prefer to hear from Chuck about his personal judgement because we are at a disadvantage by hearing it through a microphone and our limited computer speakers.
You're exactly right. The majority of people will be listening on speakers of much less quality (home/computer speakers, maybe even on their smart phones!). The MTM's seem to separate the frequencies so well that you can hear every minute detail and nuance, whereas with the MicroMonitors it sounds more muffled in comparison because they all seem to be clustered together. If you watch the other video I did of the iLoud MTM and PreSonus E66's, I explain in more detail about the MTM concept and why its better than your typical 2-speaker cabinet.
Can the MTMs be mounted to a standard microphone stand that is also used for the micro monitors?
Great video, thanks a lot!
They sure can!
I use my micro's on my xbox and they sound great, better than any tv speaker
Awesome comparison video. Thanks!
I listened on planar headphones that go *way* down. Going from the micros to the MTMs felt like sonic blinders, that you would see blocking a horse's vision, were being lifted. The sound became expansive, rich, and full - so much so that its hard to "go back."
I struggled to see the value from other videos before this one. It's really (surprise) just in the sound. Question: Do the MTMs (or the micros) allow for a sub down the road? Thanks for the video
Ok, it's me again, 2023 new guy noticing your monitors and I feel that both units are very close, but I did notice that the Micro Monitors were sounding a bit boxy but the bass was somewhat ok. But the MTM seems More Mid Range, but it too sounded more natural and nice. weak bass, but could still hear the bass. The Micro Monitors and the MTM has good highs. That's my take. Thanks for sharing. As for me, I play any thing I want on my personal keyboard, No copy rights except mine. Just like famous Floyd Cramer can play any song he wants because it's considered a cover. No infringement intended. So feel more open in your presentations. Once YT cuts us then it's time to move on. (whatever that means, lol ) Terry
Thanks man for the video
Really interesting and well presented. I have a set of Focal Alpha 65 that has not been set up for a long time (like new) but I am thinking of other small ones... for travel too. I tried the iLoud single unit and liked it but had issues. So.. regarding the stereo "separation... I was thinking that the two larger units separated further apart than the mini set could be the reason in part too. Maybe having large small and then large small again lined up would make both just about equally separated... to compare stereo separation. ...... I do like the larger units for sure..... big bucks maloy
I have both. In my opinion MTMs are a lot better sound than MICROMONITORs plus that propietary cable...BUT PORTABILITY and PRICE...Pay attention to Chuck.
superbb comparison ❤️❤️
Dude thank you I've been wanting a pair of these for a long time didn't no which ones to buy .
.r u gonna sell either pair 😊 let me no love yer videos
thx for posting, very helpfull :)
thank you for the work done ! :)
Nice review, thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Hey Chuck,
I'm eager to hear both the MTM's and the Nord Piano Monitor's.
How would you say they compare?
base overtones for sure better on the larger.. I am using headphones listening rather than my whatever speakers here. HD 280 PRO - Sennheiser
Thanks for your detailed reviews, PianoManChuck. Did you calibrate the MTMs with the calibration mic at the mic position used for this video?
I listened to this comparison on my MTMs and HEDD Type 20s.
Absolutely! Calibration is a must for this type of video. I've not heard the HEDD Type 20 in person, but at nearly 6x the cost of the iLoud MTM's I can only imagine how they'd sound! Not sure how RUclips audio would come across on a pair of those...
@@PianoManChuck Eh? So you calibrated the MTMs? I think it would be more useful to compare them to the Micros when uncalibrated. Either that, or use a separate calibration system with the Micros. The reason I say this is that we don't know how much of the difference is due to the calibration, and how much is due to the basic speaker design.
Thanks for the video!
Thank you!
Very useful! Thanks!
playing through Dyneaudio BM5A MK1 via SSL2 and the MTM are a clear winner but are they the best for that price?
for the same price or less I can get a pair of:
Adam A3x, A7x
Genelic 8020.
Focal Alpha 65.
Yamaha HS 8I.
Ok they don't come with the room mic thing.. let's be honest if you are serious about sound then the room will be treated.
they are very nice indeed and built like bricks so there is that if you need the portability.
great review
For pure piano listening like connecting it to my kawai digital piano (CA 98)
Would you recommend them ?
I don‘t have a CA98 or IK speakers, but why would you listen to the kawai CA98 through those speakers?😂🙈
Kawai CA98 has its own special optimised sound production / system!
Hello Mr. Chuck, I am a micro house producer looking for a mobile studio setup, which speaker handles low end and kick drums at louder levels without port noise? The Neumann KH 80 DSP or MTMS? I would really appreciate your advice or if you have any other recommendations :)
Kh80
There is no comparison between the two. The MTM's have over powered Bass. The KH 80's are objectively the best measuring studio monitors money can buy you under $6000. They measure flat within +/- 0.6 db from 100hz to 10khz and +/-1.5 hz acriss the spectrum. That kind of performance is simply unheard of.
What microphones are you using to record this? Hard to know what we're hearing without knowing which mics! Thanks
That was listed in the description.
@@PianoManChuck My bad! Forgot to click "Show More" in the description. Love your reviews. Looking forward to the Yamaha YC61 review, if you get one.
I have the micro monitors, very impressed with them. I did some experimenting with mounting on desk vs on stands - I highly recommend stands at ear height. The difference is in lower mid/upper bass response - the micros do sound a little boxy on the desktop, but that goes away when mounted on stands. My reference speakers are ATC SCM150A. The little IK's are amazing at c£250 compared with the ATCs at £16k!
Very cool!
Teetering on ordering , what stands do you recommend .
*pair of*
had the exact same experience - first did some test just raising them with my hands, and the mid-low got much better. Got some small, foldable desktop stands and I like them much more now! I'm a bit tempted of going for the MTMs now...
hi PianoManChuck, apreciate your reviews and about this one and piano playing, what should you recommend between a pair of micromonitors and a MTM alone, for a limited budget. It's for an MP11se, for time to time, when not on headphones...
Hi, olivier guillote. What did you do?. ¿Did you buy micro or one MTM?
I'm looking for a little monitor, to hear in low volume when not on headphones, for my digital piano. I like the bluetooth of the micro. But i'm afraid the speakers will make a buzzing noise when not in use.
Is the -11db function usable ? I am planning on getting the iloud mtm but at night i was thinking of utilizing the -11db function not to bother my neighbors.
I generally looking for an active speaker that basically muting bass option which this is closest thing to that ive seen so far .
If it is usable how bad or good are they while in that mode ?
Hey chuck what’s that box in the middle I need one thanks
Hosa SLW-333
Does the mtm have protective grill available?
You're looking at it all throughout the video.
Hi are you a fan of DSP in general. Prefer the bigger ones btw. Thanks.
I like the bigger ones too (the MTM's) which, by nature of the MTM design, are going to sound better anyway. I did a video comparing 2 different MTM monitors (iLoud MTM and PreSonus E66) in which I explain the whole principle of MTM design and why it sounds better than most conventional monitors. Quite worth checking out if you have the time: ruclips.net/video/sTAHodk3Z80/видео.html
As for DSP - whatever sounds good without sounding like something artificial has been added is fine with me.
@@PianoManChuck Yes, true. Thanks. Will check out the video.
i prefer micro...the high freq are more soft ..
The micro is way better tbh
I've been listening to the comparison through my iLoud micro speakers, they are the same in highs and mids and there is only a slight difference in the bass.
That's because you're listening on iLoud micro monitors and their limitations compared to the MTM's. If you listened on monitors equal to or greater than the MTM's capabilities, then you'd be hearing a huge difference! Did you read the video's description?
Mtms sounds this good cuz u room calibrated them for sure. Micro monitors have not the greatest position in the world too so if the room is very well acoustic treated these would sound almost the same
Iloud mtm costs more than iloud micro + jbl 305 ..
And a Mercedes Sedan costs more than a Toyota Corrola + Kia Sportage.
:)
All that music sounds the same
No way Jose, put some monitor headphones on and you'll hear the obvious difference
Great comparison. Thank you very much
