  • 90s Japanese cartoon Sailor Moon broke new ground with its sympathetic portrayal of GLBTQ characters. VICE follows the stories of queer Moonies who were closeted in the 90s but found inspiration from the series to embrace their identities and create communities based on their love of Sailor Moon, and examines the significance of the series' re-release in English.

    You can make fun of these people all you want, but just remember that they've preserved. They have gone through some shitty shit and they've found a way to love and be loved in ways that they couldn't before, and you can't shake that truth.

      +TopHatKitty bad things happen to good people all the time everywhere. the goal should be to learn & grow from it, be strong & not a quitter. the thought that life got bad & i became gay should let you know something, if you want to be gay then do it because it's what you wanted to do because it was the right thing for you. i gotta believe that when you become something else due to whatever at some point there is going to be a crash.

    I'm a straight man, and Sailor Moon affected how I see gay people. Now I want to make it clear that I didn't hate gay people, didn't think anybody should be fired from a job and certainly nobody should be physically attacked for being gay. But I thought of it in terms of 'live and let live,' and of sex. As in, "who people like to have sex with is their business; nobody should give them grief over that."
    It was _Sailor Moon_ that showed me that same sex relationships weren't just something I should be tolerant or accepting of. A relationship between two women and yes, between two men can be romantic, it can be beautiful, just like the relationship between a man and a woman can be romantic and beautiful.
    I type these words and it seems strange that there was a time when i *didn't* understand that. It seems so obvious now. But it took _Sailor Moon_ to for me to realize the obvious.
    Thank you Naoko Takeuchi. I am a better man because of your girls.

      That would be cool. Considering how beautiful the senshi are, it might be when some boys realized that they liked girls, cooties or no.
      Or even just the impact of having heroic girl characters. Oh yes, little girls could see that heroic characters don't always have to be guys, but it might have been just as important for little boys to see that.

    • @FoxyGal18
      @FoxyGal18 3 года назад +11

      @@SailorBarsoom exactly. Sailor Moon demonstrates true equality, showing that women can be just as heroic and save the world as much as men can. No feminist Propoganda. Also, in the case of LGBT characters, Sailor Moon shows that even though you're gay or trans, you are just as capable of being bad as you are of being good. Some of the gay characters in the show are Sailor Guardians, while others are villains. To me, that's true equality as it shows whether you are gay or straight, you're not above nor beneath anyone else.

    I love how Sailor Moon's main power was to love people for what made them different, even the villians. All of the inner senshi were bullied or ignored for what made them unique and awesome. Mecury was labeled a book worm, Jupiter was too big and strong, Venus was too proud of herself, and Mars was a freak for having psychic abilities.
    But Sailor Moon was always impressed by their skills and believed in them

    To a lot of people, anime, movies, shows etc. didn't change their lives, therefore they find it silly to feel attached to things like this. However, for some people, you really have to understand that they feel shitty all the time. I have been suicidal several times and just wanted to quit, but manga like Sailor Moon helped me.
    Hell, I had no friends for three years. If this inspires me and makes me feel better for a few short moments that make you feel worth something. I can ignore that I'm depressed as fuck, and that's always nice.
    But anyways, I'm not going to throw a pity party. I'm just directing this towards the majority of viewers: if this helps people get out of shitty situations, then who the fuck cares? Just because you have friends and something you care about without any form of media inspiring you doesn't make somebody who is stupid.

    Yes! This! All of this! I relate to this so much!
    I related to Sailor Pluto because she was a solitary soldier. She has incredible power, but she's the loneliest of the Sailor Guardians. I grew up as an only child and had very few friends as a youngster. It didn't help that my summer vacations were spent alone in my house in the middle of nowhere while my parents worked. It wasn't all bad, but Sailor Moon got me through a lot and made me realize a lot about my own inner strength.

Too bad my five-year-old self couldn't fully get the argument across 😓

Okay, if you thought this was overly corny that's one thing, but that doesn't justify personally attacking these people.

    For some reason... this makes me feel really... really sad.
    I feel like watching my 12 year old self stuck in these older people...
    Whatever means people use for anime or manga, films or whatever...
    I feel like it is not ... perhaps "healthy" to cling on to it this much to be able to feel "okay" with yourself...
    Maybe it was just cut or produced that way to make it seem more extreme-- but it gave me this really sad vibe of people who are stuck in their dreams-- and can't be themselves anywhere else, but their community of Sailor Moon fan circle...

    • @sarahweller9092
      @sarahweller9092 8 лет назад +3

      +scarstalgia I agree that the video does to portray that as an essential theme, but I think it's important to recognize too for a lot of those in LGBTQ community, they found it because they grew up in intensely homophobic environment that threatened their safety, and it would have potentially been more fulfilling or even safer for them to channel those aspects of their identity into connecting with this kind of media than to engage with a community that rejects them.
      I'm not queer and I've never even watched sailor moon, but I can relate to that satisfaction of finding friends through interests developed during childhood and cherishing those friendships and interests as adults. Obviously, people do other things, work jobs, and have other interests, but if this helps people endure limited environments and homophobia, then kudos to it.

    It's weird how they made Haruka and Michiru cousins in the English dub, but in the Latin American one both were an unapologetically loving couple. And we are supposed to be more conservative.
    Because of Sailor Moon, for the very first time I saw on TV a gay couple portrayed with dignity, even if it was all an animation. As for the transgender characters, I didn't think too much about them other than they could be whatever they wanted. I was more interested on their actions and how they'd affect the story.
