This is probably my favorite album from 2021 (the album by Dry Cleaning is a close second), I've listened to it so much. One of the things I really like is all of the brass instruments that get used as it really gives it a unique sound. It reminds me of some of my other favorite bands from long ago like the Psychedelic Furs with all that great sax. If you haven't read her book as well, it is a great read. She is a truly wonderful writer as well as musician. While the book was touching it was also depressing for me in many ways. Hoping to get to see them live one day * fingers crossed *
I had it second to Cassandra Jenkins’ album An Overview on Phenomenal Nature. Give that album a listen if you haven’t yet. This song (and video) is a highlight. ruclips.net/video/eW8XoovSlsM/видео.html The Dry Cleaning album is also great.
Discovered her completely by chance a little while ago when I was streaming a different band and it switched to something that wasn't in my library. Normally I hate when that happens but this time the song that came on (Paprika) was incredible so I had to know what it was. I had never even heard of Japanese Breakfast before then but now I'm regularly listening to Jubilee from start to finish cause the whole album is just that good.
I picked up her book on an impulse from the library’s new releases shelf. Read it. Daughter tells me Michelle is a musician. RUclips next, and now a fan.
Discovered her by accident by listening to songs on shuffle (paprika came on and it was incredible) listened to Jubilee and I absolutely adore it. Listened to previous works and they’re just as beautiful. Read her memoir, and knowing the hardships she’s faced I’m really glad and proud that she’s embracing joy and happiness
So happy she’s getting more recognition as her career goes on. Jubilee was easily my favorite album from 2021 and Slide Tackle is also my favorite song. Wonderful performance.
Well, sorry James but I missed this episode. I did however, catch her and her band moments ago on Austin City Limits. Every so often you come across a vocalist that just stands out from the crowd. Well, she is one of the vocalists. Her voice is so captivating. She's amazing.
You know you’re stanning for Jbrekkie when you search for HOURS for a stateside copy for Tropical Jinx when she was part of Little Big League. Lol. So happy for all your achievements!
Japanese Breakfast merece absolutamente el Grammy a Mejor Álbum Alternativo, ojalá lo ganen. Casi toda la competencia es buena, también las grandiosas St. Vincent, Halsey y Arlo Parks.
Google says "During an interview with Hey Alma, the artist shared that the band name originated by combining something uniquely American (breakfast) with something that Americans found “exotic” (Japanese). In truth, this artist was born in Seoul, South Korea, and identifies closely with her Korean heritage"
She is half Korean from her mom and half white from her dad, she grew up on Oregon and would visit Korea throughout her childhood to visit family. Her mom passed away when she was 25 due to cancer and her book Crying in H mart gives more light into what her life was like growing up.
idk a lot of times whoever does the audio mixes doesn’t put enough emphasis on certain areas of the music like i feel like the bass and even michelle’s voice wasn’t given justice bc it was a weird mix. maybe i’m imagining it idk lmao
@@nerfornothing5372 Ok, that makes sense! I don't think you're imagining it - I can hear what you mean after another listen. It's as if there's a slight imbalance not representing all the components.
She DOESN'T knowhow to dance. And I'm surprised, she didn't have James Corden announce the performance with her name (Michelle Zauner) and the band Japanese Breakfast....
Maybe I'm missing the sound of the album?? How is this grammy nominated?? It's lofi-washed-out elevator level energy is not that great. Her singing is mediocre and uninspiring. Reggie Watts outro had more creative quality than that band's entire song.
@@_froufroufox_ your comment is the text equivalent to “ you’ll learn to like it.” This song, and the entire album is as boring as cold unbuttered toast.
ever heard of bad live mixes? it’s an incredible album even just first hearing it on your phone or even in person live. many live performances have bad mixes when they’re caught on video
Clearly I am missing something, but to me this sounds horrible and I didn't see or hear anything that suggests the singer has a grain of talent (besides picking a great dress for the occasion). She can't sing.
Yeah, that comment sucks. She can sing. There was a little struggle here. She's a great writer, great songwriter and is still growing. So awesome to see her progression.
Still following her journey from first album because she’s a brilliant musician and her book also touching most of people in the world
Same
Yep. 🥲💖 Seeing her shine! 🌟

Hands down. 2021 was full of great music written during the pandemic- nothing holds a dime to this LP.
Hey I recognize you. You helped me pass calc 2 in my freshman year of college. Who knew you'd also have great taste in music??
yep my fave album of 2021

@@viachicago Dude that album is BOMB. So good. It's definitely on my Top 10 list.
One of the most fun songs at the concert. Michelle just gets better and better!
I'm a metalhead and I found Japanese Breakfast last year and she blows me away. Jubilee is a wonderful album

That literally happened to me too. Something about Paprika was just so thought provoking, it made me want more of Japanese breakfast
I picked up her book on an impulse from the library’s new releases shelf. Read it. Daughter tells me Michelle is a musician. RUclips next, and now a fan.
She looks so full of joy I’m so proud of her
The only way this could've gotten better is if Michelle walked off the stage, arrested James Corden in his studio, and took him to prison
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😭
Excuse my ignorance, but arrested for what?

ive been waiting for a live performance of this song. my fave from the album!
same!
Mine too!
Yeah it seems like the other late night shows are just having her perform be sweet
I discovered her randomly and i love seeing her grow
Same here!
A lot of indie bands these days lack in the vocal department in a live setting but this woman can truly sing!
I had a dark phase this year and this song was the anthem.
She is precious! Love her dancing & enjoying herself. I'm glad I just stumbled onto this!
I just discovered her recently and read her memoir, Crying in H Mart! So far my favorite song is ‘Kokomo, IN’
So happy she’s getting more recognition as her career goes on. Jubilee was easily my favorite album from 2021 and Slide Tackle is also my favorite song. Wonderful performance.
This is jazzy. Really like it. So smooth

By far the best album of 2021. Not even close.

Yesssss!!!!
This song indeed was the theme in San Francisco.

I’m Japanese i like this song and also our breakfast style, but I can’t get why the name is Japanese breakfast. What is she saying?

Japanese breakfastは歌手の子が韓国出身で、隣国の日本から入ってくるアニメ文化やRPGなどのゲーム文化にハマってこの名前にしたらしい。あと音の響きが綺麗だから。

Maybe she was nervous? I saw her in concert and she nailed it there. Can’t win them all I guess.
They’re headlining major music festivals and you’re in here looking for new music via James Corden, I think we know who’s winning.
