Looked through the comments to see if anyone else was traumatized as a child by the constellation monsters and their creepy music. Was not disappointed.
This game haunted me for years, especially those attacking constellations... :[ I remember standing in front of buildings and waiting out the night so I don't get attacked - I was very young when I played this game xD (I still find the constellations creepy)
Tatsuhiko PC version has more traps. Jade per character, Anak requires money, Hordkhen Castle always has the damn shark, HP and MP take forever to regenerate... and the obligatory anti piracy check. Among other changes that make the game even more obtuse and hard.
Whenever I played Drakkhen as a kid, I would camp at the castle to avoid these creepy things and wait until morning. Even at my age, I find these things to be still be creepy even though they don't give me nightmares anymore...
Oh my GOD This game used to scare the shit out of me, those star constellation things were fuckin scary, in fact, I believe they have scarred me for life as whenever I look up at the stars now I get an uneasy feeling I had no clue what was going on when I used to play this nor do I remember much, if anything at all, APART from the star constellations bit, too weird, too too weird
me too! I played this as a kid, and this whole game scared me to death. now, I am near 33, and when I look up at the stars at night, I half expect gemini to wave their arms, or Orion to start walking... good to hear it's not just me.
Sorry to necro your comment but I felt the same way. As soon as those notes started to play it was like I was a kid again, afraid of what's happening in my game
I remember the one castle where the shark would kill one of my characters when he/she crossed the drawbridge. This game is like a bad LSD trip. I gave up after like 10 minutes.
To avoid fighting star constellation monsters of Drakkhen, simply run away from them by pressing L and R together. Till you gain experience and magic, you can fight them.
Yeah i remember this game wondering about what the title was but forgot all I remember about this game were the scary but annoying constellation ambush attacks at night!
but where's the tall shadow guy with the black widow red hourglass on his chest? that's the only constellation battle i can even remember that made me sh*t brix as a kid. not to mention that music that plays as the stars rattle, creepy man.
those darned stars are always harassing me. This game was frustrating as it happened early on and you were screwed a whole lot. It is hard to fight these things without magic.
I remember getting this game as a Christmas gift way back in the day. Good lord did a) this game suck and b) was the difficulty almost impossible. Looking back on it 20 years later, I kind of have a weird love for it as it was the first Super Nintendo game I ever played. How in the hell were you supposed to beat these constellation monsters though?
I won the game as a kid, it wasn't that hard, but the game play mechanics did not age well, but I did like the immersive world they tried to create in a primitive era of gaming.
Getting the entire constellation on the left side of the screen seems to wake them up. I remember they were pretty easy to flee from (mash L+R buttons), considering you're outside in a field and they can fly.
As far as I knew as a kid it was entirely random. But I recall a lot of times they'd fly around and just never actually do anything, and other times they'd like oneshot you. I vaguely recall that if it was close to dawn, they would fly away when the sun came out if you were still fighting them, but that might be mistaken recollection

This is one of the benefits of living in an industrial area. This can never happen to me. Although, I feel for those who live in rural areas.

My mother spent 64.99 dollars for this game for me ( back In 1991). It was a hell of a lot of money back in the day
This game has so many beginner traps in it... Constellations, those urn things in road intersections, the shark, water, the shadow man...I love it.

Hahaha, it has ruined me
the most unsettling part to me as a kid was the sound it makes before they appear

Add me to the "freaked out as a kid" list too. At least you can only encounter them one per night.

Ryan C The beginning castle, once you made enough progress in the game Hordkhen starts guarding the drawbridge with one.
Eventually I get strong enough and equip bows and these beasts go down after a little fuss.

Dragon Agent Productions Arming yourself with a bow usually helps!
Those constellations freak me right the fuck out!
Creepiest part of the game.

just read your discript, interesting insight, will have to remember that next time I have time to play Drakkhen.
The Black Giant you speak of is not a constellation battle but an enemy native to the ice plains.

chuppachoppa Equip bows once you're far enough in the game and they'll eventually meet their match.
What actually triggers these bastards to attack? I mean how do you avoid this happening?
Just fleeing combat?
