Firstly thank you, this quest was driving me mad. Secondly, having tested it out, I ca confirm that angle does have something to do with it. You need to run at them from behind going right for their back. Not button press needed.

thank you for this. this quest is so frustrating. but I found there's one that spawns directly to the right of your reload point in this video, behind the staircase. if you position yourself right behind their spawn point and save, when they spawn on a reload you'll get them immediately. that breakthrough allowed me to get them easily, as it added a third possible spawn on this path and made the method even more effective
They should force the guy who made this quest to do it 10 times in a row himself. I can't catch a single one of them. They always just disappear.
Thanks for the help. I took what you did and adjusted it. I Start from that point loading, reloading if I don't catch them and going back and saving there as a start point to where they might be. But catching them is sooooo much easier if you spot them by a two story place and jump right on top of them. WAYYYYYY easier. As long as you don't hit something before falling on them it's 100% catch every time
This is by far the fastest and easiest method. Cheers dude.
Just run around until you see one, remember the way he's facing, go a few meters behind them, save, load & load until he appears in front of you, then run in a straight line into their backs, press X when you're close and you'll catch them.. now look for another one in another location and repeat the process
You really saved me a keyboard, I was that close to throw it over the window. Following the tactic on DragonAge Wiki was a no-go and quest started to seem really frustrating until I found this video.

Good strategy that saved me a lot of time. When you load the game, you can listen for the sound of one of them appearing. There are about seven spots near by where they will be. The louder the noise the closer they are. Doing this I finished the quest in under 30 minutes. Btw, for me, they never appeared in either spot you mentioned. Twice they appear just to the left of your starting point.
There's also audio ques when one is near. You'll say something like "I should look around."
The key to press is not "X" but "L3" when close of his back.
I've never been able to catch them. I'm going to try this now.
Just did this.. you do have to press x behind them.. also I found a corner to stand in where all the nobles are chatting just past Cullens area.. was much easier.. the waterfall kept giving me one that was facing my way.

Seriously. BioWare went full dickmode in Trespasser's sidemission. None of them are even listed as in your journal. I was wondering why there were random smokebombs/teleports or what those were while running around. Until I found out that's part of a side-mission.
Also the Halla-Hunt and the Dog Treats are not really in your journal, but at least you can't miss them IF you started them. (Talked with Cullen for the Treats and around around much, and find the Halla-Map by searching off-path in the crossroads (reminds me of Deep Roads.... they hid some Gears WAY OFF the roads, no normal player would find them)
Also, you can't really sneak up on the Harlequins, so you have to run, both will cause them to flee... (not) well done BioWare....

I was just exploring then I came up to a jester person, he was standing still and my inquisitor just fluted. So, I caught a harlequin without that I knew about it :p
I found the easiest way to do this was stand turned away from the waterfall, facing south, two steps from the wall and just one step from the waterfall just enough so you're making sure no water hits you. Keep reloading, the harlequin will spawn right in front of you and be automatically caught without you moving a muscle. If it poofs away adjust your position just slightly accordingly, so you'll end up right behind it next spawn. Would work anywhere you've already tagged one. Stop dead and save
Just got my first Harlequin ever using this method. Holy cow is this just an easier method. It takes constant reloads, but it works, especially since you only really need to do this once to get the schematic.

This is probably too late for a lot of people, but I was having a looooot of difficulty. Then, I decided to get the drop of them. Literally. If you get above where they're standing (certain places never worked for me) you can fall down onto them and then you should get them pretty easily. But that's the ONLY way I've gotten them.

ok i have the solution for PC users, i tried more than 100 times with my old graphic card a Nvidia GT 620 and always failed, now i have a Nvidia GTX 1050 TI and cathed 1 at first try, so the solution its: First buy a new graphic card, and second WALK SLOWLY until the inquisitor say he saw something, once he say that saw something you must RUN to the Harlequin from behind AND DONT CLICK ANYTHING OR TRY TO INTERACT, you will catch it withouth interact just by running from behind he.
Been doing this for 15 minutes and still haven't caught one. Easy my ass.
Took 1 hour 10 mins for 5 of them.

Anytime you get in area with one your character says "theres something around here" kinda the same thing they says when you get the dinging search thingy.

I actually caught my first one by accident. I was on the floor beneath Josie and realized I could stand on the trees, and was aiming to get the loot on top of the leafy garden archs by the statues. Then I saw the harlequin under me where I was about to jump, and I didnt see him there my last few saves (I uh... kept miscalculating my jump) and so I fell behind them thinking it was like the Quizquisition dude in Skyhold, but maybe Orlais specific. I was ready too! I mean it worked, but I'm still disappointed I wasn't quized :c
The rest of the harlequin were not so easy. When I saw the second one by the waterfall that was when I found the frustration I should've had to begin with ;-; If it weren't for the fact that I was trying to bleed this dlc dry of everything I would've given up but Andraste's ass that shit was difficult.
Save your game at this location. Keep reloading until one spawns in front of you. Run at them from directly behind.

Even with this guide I cannot catch a single one of them. Imo they did not give this quest much though when they were making it. This quest is an annoyance and nothing more imo.

Lol "Brand" which is the schematic you get, is cool but isnt a very good weapon. Just gives elemental damage for a warrior weapon. The hilt is customizable at least haha.
Does it have to be a hard save or would a quick save also work?
if you miss one and save do you have to go back to an older save and go back into the DLC or can you still catch the 5 you need?

Ummmm this is my first time through Trespasser and I've only done one character so far i am at like 350hrs i know lol but i just want to get everything and ill go through again! ANYWAY I've had to a bunch of times look to videos for help and most are so god dam annoying and drawn out and basic! Yours are awesome! I find you 0 points of annoying and rather entertaining i actually felt your frustration with your F bomb at the start of the first Tag! Im a fan dude!
