    Please clarify the portion @25:14 where you told about burning and melting of rocks which leads to transformation of olivine to basalt to andesite to granite. I think these phase changes occur due to cooling and not heating because when olivine from mantle reaches the oceanic crust it is getting cooled. When getting contact with water, rapid cooling occurs so definitely this phase change phenomenon cannot be due to burning and melting.

    Mantle layer of earth isn't in liquid state but rather in solid state at high pressure and temperature differences that cause it to act as semi solid same as asphalt acts. Thus this semi solid mantle forms convection current causing small but viscous flow and moving the plates. Mantle has basically two layers. The uppermost layer together with continental crust and Oceanic crust forms lithosphere. The lowermost layer also known as Asthenosphere is at very high pressure and temperature that produces convection current in semi solid state.

As u said later Olivine came out and cooled down to form Basalt. But earlier u said that melting Olivine at high temperature changes to basalt.. Which one is true??

    If at all mantle is in highly fluid state then how can s waves pass through it...as u said s waves do not pass through liquid... please any one clarify my doubt..

    • @shivanichoudhary9250
      @shivanichoudhary9250 4 года назад

      Yes,you right s waves can only pass through solid form that is why when it enters to mantle (whose inner part is in molten or liquid state)it gets "absorb" due to its shear waves and only reflection takes place ,From here we can conclude that outer core is in liquid state which hinders s waves to pass through it and gets absorb in mantle layer only !!

    I think the word 'heavy' is not appropriate as heaviness is more related to the concept of mass. If i take half kg of basalt and 1 kg of granite and if i ask you which is heavy then the clear answer is granite which is contradictory. So probably the word 'density' would be more appropriate.
    Great lecture though.

      I. If 2 oceanic plates collide with each other the plate having more length will get subducted and destroyed into the mantle.
      II. If an oceanic and continental plate collides with each other than the oceanic plate will always subduct and get destroyed into the mantle. This is beacause, OCEANIC CRUST IS HEAVIER THAN CONTINENTAL CRUST.
      III. If 2 continental plates collide with each other than the collision between two continental plates crunches and folds the rock at the boundary, lifting it up and leading to the formation of mountains and mountain ranges. (It may sometimes also result in earthquake or tsunami )
