In this video I will paint 2 loose, semi abstract landscapes and give you my favourite tips to help you move towards a more free and loose painting style with acrylics.
Materials I use in the video are:
Sketching Paper 110lb/160gram, smooth and acid free. You can use any type of paper, try different ones to find your favourite :)
Acrylic paint (yellow ochre, burnt sienna, untramarine blue, mars black and titanium white)
masking tape, various brushes, painitng knife and watersoluble crayons/pencils.
As an art teacher I often hear my students say they want to paint looser, freer and with more expression. There are many tips and ways to loosen up and I encourage you to try the ones that appeal to you and add your own as you progress on your painting journey.
I hope this video will help you with some ideas for loose acrylic paintings whether you paint landscapes, florals or even pure abstracts.

Hello everyone! I wanted to share my best tips for a more loose and expressive painting style and I hope you find them useful. Please feel free to share your best tip with everyone here if you like.
Thanks for watching and have a lovely creative week :)
Thank you for sharing your tips. My tip is to know your colors before you start.
Yes, that is really good advice. Thank you, John and thanks for watching!
Wow, I just saw a fab tip of using palette knife to protect an area when painting. Very cool.
I was wondering if anyone would pick up on that one ;-)
Thanks for watching :)
You make it look easy, but your advice is also really practical. I learn something every time I watch you paint!
I have been struggling for a long time finding my style and color mixing, but have always been drawn to this technique. I want you to know, your videos were my breakthrough. I feel freer and am enjoying the process once again. Thank you! Thank you!
That is wonderful Heidi - I'm so happy to hear it! :)
That was great! I did a painting today and stayed loose for a while and then I tensed up and got aggravated because I didn’t have a small up brush to make tree limbs, lol. Thank you for the video.
I just discovered your channel last night and love it. Thank you so much for your generosity in sharing your process. I recently began to paint again after a decades long hiatus, and have really been struggling with how to achieve depth and luminosity in my work. Your videos have helped me so much already. Thank you again.
Hi Laurie. What a wonderful message! Thank you so much for taking the time to write me. It makes me so happy that others find my videos useful - and it's messages like yours that make it all worth while! So thank you for that & wishing you well on your creative journey :)
Best wishes,
Marie Louise
Love your advice, 😊 Thank you. Trying out 2 paintings at one and give myself permission ❤️ wish I’d found you when I started in 2021
I love all of your advice in this one :) giving yourself permission...so important and yet SO difficult, though I don't know why....and its me, not others. My husband is always thrilled when I want to paint because he knows that my pain levels are not as bad as normal if I'm up to trying to paint and even when we have no money, like now, he wants me to paint and says he'll figure out how to get me supplies, so he's great about it...though I feel guilty using money we need for food or mortgage of course so I don't use much, but enough to make us both happy. But it's still very hard for me to allow myself to just do something I enjoy without thinking of all the things I should be doing. Like if my pain levels are down that afternoon then I should be cleaning or whatever so I never allow myself time to paint. So, working on that. As I said in other comments, I have loads to learn :) also how to be loose...I want SO badly to be loose, its what I picture in my head...but some how as I paint i become so overly detailed. Working on several paintings is a super good idea! Although I can only fit so much on my dining table ;) but I'll definitely look for a notebook like yours...I'm just amazed at how well your sketch book takes all that watery acrylic paint!! It does beautifully! And then I could try lots of things without the stress of "ruining" a canvas, because that also stops me from painting :) sorry for the babbling 😳 but I truly appreciate your work and the effort you put in to these videos! I love them :) thank you again!!
Thank you very much for your comments and engagement with the videos. I am really happy that you feel you are getting some useful information. The videos do take a long time to make, especially the editing stage which can easily take hours. So thank you for your kind words of encouragement, it is truly appreciated. Keep being creative & stay safe. Best wishes, Marie Louise
@@TheDanishPainter thank you Marie :) I can only imagine how long it takes!! Makes my brain hurt just thinking about it :) but you do a wonderful job and it's very much appreciated!
Hope you have a wonderful weekend!!! :)
Thank you, you too ☀️☀️

@@TheDanishPainter hi! I just had to tell you because I'm super excited...so I told my husband about your sketchbook painting trials so he found a bit to get me one!! It's an arteza mixed media sketchbook, 110lb, just 9x12inch...I think yours looks a lot bigger but no matter what, I'm excited :) it should get here later this week. Super excited to try out some looser (hopefully loose :/ I'll use a bigger brush like you said) paintings without the pressure or guilt of (in my mind) "wasting" or "ruining" a canvas!! So hopefully I'll be able to relax more and try more things :)
Thanks again!!
We’ll done as always. Thanks for your advice and suggestions!
Thanks Tony :)
Beautiful work! Thank you again.
Stunning! Such skill and talent!
Your work is so inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing.

Hallo Peer. Vielen Dank für die freundlichen Worte an meinen Kanal :) Schön zu hören, dass Sie es nützlich und inspirierend finden.
You have taken me on a new direction which I am so grateful for’ I watch your videos every night trying to absorb your teachings Thank you so much !
That is wonderful John, I'm so glad to hear it. Thanks for taking the time to write and thanks for watching! Greetings from Denmark :)
Really helpful; thank you. Please could you advise/recommend as to the best sketch book for acrylics. Thank you.
Your advise is excellent, but for someone who has just started painting (15 months ago) the name of the colours would help as well. I can’t tell you enough how I enjoy just looking and admiring your work. Once again thank you so much.
You are absolutely right I should add the name of the colors - sorry about that, I will go and rectifiy right away. Thanks for pointing it out and thanks for watching :)
Great Video.. thank you.
Thank you l cannot wait to try out your tips to become looser l am subscribed now ❤️
I’m really enjoying your videos, I need to loosen up my paintings thanks for the tips.
My pleasure Linda. Thanks for watching! :)
Great tips and and a very helpful demonstration. Thank you
Thank you Mark and have a lovely day.
Can you please tell me the type of brush and the size you are using?
Thank you - that was so helpful. My husband once suggested that I paint two canvases at a time, but I said no way! Now I'm going to try it after all!
I say yes, definitely give it a go. Somehow it takes off some of the pressure as well. Thank for your comment and for watching :)
Love this style of painting. Thanks for the advice, and I'll definitely be giving it a shot
Cool, I’m glad to hear it 😊
I jist had to rematch this as my sketchbook came in a few days ago and I'm hoping to sit down and play with it tomorrow! Though I've been hoping to use it for several days but something unavoidable has come up each day🙄 but while waiting on dinner one night I did take the time to tape off my paper...just into 2 rectangle shapes. I have a photograph I took years ago that I want to paint, I've done the black and white thing to it as you suggested so we'll see. But even though it's jist paper that I bought jist to try things out on, I'm still nervous, so figured I'd rematch this one to remind myself to relax and loosen up. Another thing I have to remember is my color layering... recently I've made a bunch of simple thanks you cards in watercolor, which means the lights to darks are opposite, so that in this sketchbook I'm using for acrylic I can get real dark as you've suggested and always add more light or whatever over in more layers, so hopefully that will help me relax too. I use both my hands for most everything, art included, but thought I might do one with only using my left (bit more dominant) hand on one and only my right on the other since I usually bounce back n forth...though a lot of that is due to pain so when one hand or arm is too painful I switch and I think loads of artists do this too, so I'm doing nothing new. But it might be a challenge to only use the one, so might be fun. And they're small and I'll take a break if I need a layer to dry so shouldn't be too hard on the joints.
Anyway...excited, and nervous, but more excited, to try this out and get some of these ideas I have in my head out onto paper, even if not good, and not hold back for fear of messing up a canvas. So, thanks again!
Taping off your paper is the first step so you're already well on your way - yay!
And using ideas from watercolor with the layering and all sounds like an excellent idea. Oh and you know what - having some nervousness is VERY normal - you are after all going outside your comfort zone by trying and learning something new. Take care & happy painting :)
@@TheDanishPainter thank you :) spent the afternoon on them....they're awful :( but...I figure I'll walk away from them for a bit then try some different things on the next ones....my whole head screams at me that I'm worthless at this and everything and to not bother....nothing new there :) but, I've not let that part of my brain totally defeat me yet, close at times over the years, but I know it need to practice and practice so that's what I'll do in this sketchbook and work on not being as frustrated as I am at myself :) we've had horrible scary weather here in TN but today is beautiful and everything is starting to bloom, so I think I'll take a break and go outside and take some pictures of the cute little buds on the trees and try to make that part of my brain shut up ;) so....I'll keep trying. Thanks as always for your help :) hope you're having a beautiful day and rest of the week!!!!!🥰
@Jade You probably already know this but some days its like everything we paint is awful and other days everything turns out great. It's definitely not a nice feeling the "bad" painting days. But we have to push through!
Wishing you a beautiful day also and a wonderful week 🌷🌷
@@TheDanishPainter thank you...had to clean today but ill be trying more soon. Thank you🥰
sehr schöne Bilder😊
Thank you 🤗
Thanks for watching ;-)
merci
I dont think watercolours are my forte, I'm going to try acrylic and use them like water colours.....you have inspired me!
Nice. Thanks.
Thank you for watching Jimmy :)
Hi! Love these! Thanks for sharing! May I ask what type of acrylic paint you use? Thanks a million
Do you mean the brand of acrylics? If so in this video the paints are Winsor&Newton but I use different brands all the time. I also like Daler&Rowney and Golden. Some of my paints are student grade and some are professional grade and I tend to use student grade for my youtube videos. Hope that helps and please let me know if you have any other questions :)
@@TheDanishPainter sorry I meant as in fluid, impasto etc
@@estelledemontrond-box2403 Mostly I use tube colors but as you can probably tell from the video I tend to delute the paints with water. So both fluid and impasto would work fine.
@@TheDanishPainter thank you so much for taking the time !
@@estelledemontrond-box2403 You are most welcome. I'm happy it is useful to you :)
😍😍😍
👍👍👍
Do you feel the yellow tape influences your color choices as opposed to say blue or white masking tape?
No I don’t think it does. I can’t get good white masking tape here, so yellow it is.
