The 4 absolutely looks better than the OG. But the question for me is "Is it enough better to make me spend the money to upgrade since my OG is working fine and I've got a ton of accessories?". And I think the answer so far, is no. One thing I'd love to see is a comparison between them of say, documenting the repair of something on a workbench, say at arm's reach. I think that if you are satisfied with your Osmo Action 1 and from this video you don't feel a need to upgrade, then by all means don't. Unfortunately in our current Tech world, everyone wants the latest and the greatest as they think it will somehow change/improve their lives, it won't. Couldn't agree more. Also about iPhone... i have iPhone 8 and it is impressive what it can capture when shooting RAW with 3rd party app. To go back to your review.. from videos you posted, i also agree with others that OG looks better, due more natural look and not being oversharpen. But when i saw footage where people set sharpness to -2, it becomes better. Stability is better and low light performance is better due bigger sensor. So to be fair, 4 is better than 1 after tiny bit of tweeking (sharpness). I also like magnetic attachment - practical as hell. But then again, am i willing to spend money to uprave from OG? Not yet. Technology itself in camera department (being smartphone, action cams, dslr, mirrorless, compact) became obssesion and joy killer.

Great video I been using the Action 1 for almost 3 years been holding of on getting a new one got the Insta 360 X3 a few months back but if I get a new action camera will definitely be a DJi Action camera whenever I decide to get a new one…
Great comparison. I have been considering upgrading to the 4 from my original Action but this has shown me that it would be a waste of money since my original is still going strong. Yes the audio on the 4 is significantly better but everything else is very similar and I don't think you would notice the video quality difference if you didn't put them side by side.
I'd say the action 4 has finally got the color pop or vibrant look as the GoPros do now..... To be honest DJI has always made a superior product at least concerning audio, hardware and software but now now The image quality is just as good if not better than a GoPro. If you're starting out on a budget or maybe you don't want take the financial risk destroying/losing a action camera in certain shots a DJI action one is the way to go....
Andre - Both cameras are good. I give the 4 a little edge on detail. On that however, the detail also makes dark things really dark, like shadows. The shadows on your face are almost harsh, yet the detail in the brick of your home is mucho better in the detail than the 1. Hoefully the gremlins from R3 wont be in the R4.
Thanks for the video! After seeing this, I regret selling my og action 1. Been looking to buy Action 3 or 4, but not anymore. IMHO action 4 has too oversharpen image, it looks like an iPhone. So not good. Action 1 only lacks 10-bit recording. And that's a bummer. And og Action seems to have a richer and nicer color too.
You need to record in cine profile and grade to get the best look. Standard settings look like a cell phone video. I already got a cell phone. I need something that looks better than a cell phone.
These are action cameras and the majority of people don't use Log or Cine profile for the best footage, they want to turn it on, record and edit without color grading their footage, but yes, Log/Flat gies the most flexability
I have to ozmo 1 and I was worried I was missing something. After this video I can rest easy as the only difference I noticed was the ozmo 4 color was just a touch more saturated.
I have been using my OA1 for a few years, and loved it... I use it mainly for watersports (kitesurfing and foiling), so far the OA4 for me is better: much longer battery life, wider FOV, I can change pre-set settings on the fly and hear in which mode I am (mounted on my helmet), better stabilisation, horizontal level stabilisation, much better color in low light... and probably more to discover. What I'm missing is the burst function in photo mode , and yesterday I had severe problems with overheating camera. I was using it in full sunlight air temp 28°C, no wind. It overheated in 4K 60 after a few minutes, 4K 30, 1080P 60 and 1080P30. overheating took more time with lower res and less FPS, but was still a problem... (it was in full sun with backscreen towards the sun, so very bad situation for overheating) ... My OA1 never overheated... I guess I will have to cover it for use in full sunlight without cooling. Here's footage from my first use: ruclips.net/video/ha9jx7cwHFc/видео.html
@@WORTHITORNOT Just checked, I bought a new card, U3 on it... thx for the info, did not know that... so far I never saw a complain about overheating with the OA4... wil try my OA1 and OA4 in the same situation with sun at the back and see if there is a difference in overheating or not...
@@WORTHITORNOT I found why the overheating happens so fast compare to a lot of reviews. I'm in EU and EU regulation doest not allow electronics to go above 48°C, then is shuts of. unfortunately. It makes this AO4 almost unusable in sunlight. It shuts af ater a few minutes. In really hot climates It shuts probably off after a few minutes in all conditions. Luckily there is a trick that works: google voor osmo action 3 overheating and you'll find the sollution. By adding a little file on the SD card this 48°C limit is taken away. Without it, it shuts of at 4K 60pfs in 20 minutes, with I could record more then 40 minutes at 4K 60pfs in 20 minutes , and then my battery ran flat...
Great comparison video both look really good. Clarity pretty close, OG view looks a bit closer. All in all both are smooth operators, since I have the Action 1 will keep it until who knows.
Awesome video, thanks! I bought the OA1 brand new in the beginning of last year (I didn't like the OA2), before the OA3 was announced. At the time, even though I knew it was dated, it was still the best I could do in my budget. I'd like an OA3 or OA4 and this OA4 footage looks amazing, but the quality of the OA1 is still great at the price point and better than anything I can shoot with a cell phone or any of the point and shoot digital cameras I have laying around. The focusing problems of the OA3 have me a little gun shy of the newer products, I look forward to more OA4 videos to see how things flush out as time goes on. I'm wondering if all the focusing problems of the OA3 are the reason they rushed the OA4 out, or perhaps it was due to parts scarcity or something along those lines for the BOM of the OA3.
If you take a look at some of my Action 3 videos you'll see the focusing issues I had with 3 of them and I was one of the 1st to comment on it etc. So when I got the Action 4 that was the FIRST thing I checked and I'm happy to report that with the new larger sensor and lens, the Action 4 has ZERO focus issues. It's a fantastic camera much like the original Osmo Action was when it first came out.
@@WORTHITORNOT how about getting hot? I've seen some complaints on reddit about the OA4 getting hot, but to be honest my OA1 gets hot as well, even with an aluminum cage on it for heat sinking. Particularly when using rocksteady
@@kayak_homie Well all cameras get hot recording 4K because of the processing required, even larger Mirrorless cameras suffer this issue. The biggest issue is people using a slow sd card instead of a fast U3 speed as a slow cards create a big bottleneck causing even more heat.
@@WORTHITORNOT that is a good point, I'm going to go home and check my SD card now lol, thanks for pointing out. I think I have a good one but not 100% sure now

Thanks for the video nicely done... was thinking about upgrading to the OSMO 4 but now i think I'll hold off a bit only because 1. I have the OG Action and it still works great and has taken a beating and 2. I heard that the OSMO Action 5 is just on the horizon of being announced?
I have not heard that, but then again they released the Action 4 not long after the Action 3, but that "might" be because the Action 3 had a focus issue.
I own an OA1 and not content with the lack of horizon leveling. I mount it on a bike and all the videos come skewed. I really like the horizon leveling on the OA4 that is lacking in the OA1. So I wanted to switch to the OA4. But looking at your video, I was surprised to see how similar the results look side by side. I am starting to ask myself if I was wrong in my judgement of the OA1. I don't think I was...
The Action 4 is a big step up from the OA1 with overall image quality, field of view, dynamic range, audio , and battery life. That’s just my opinion as someone who loved the original Osmo Action
yea..i'm still using my osmo 1 for moving shots but the sound is terrible... I use a Sony ZV1 for the talk shots but I could simply get a osmo 4 and fix the issue....
You can see why so many complained about the 2 and 3. The Action original was a good camera, but with the Action 4, Osmo have woken up Andre. I’m loving this one. It’s actually difficult to get a bad picture with it!
Hi Andre. Returning to the land of the living now. Had operation. Ablation, electrical remapping and reset heart. Able to walk for miles now and no longer frightened to leave house on my own. Still have one helluva bruise but got my energy back, thanks. Hadn’t realised just how bad it had become.
The action 2 was an interesting idea that didn't really work out. The 3 felt like a test to see if the market was still interested in a "traditional" action camera from DJI. When they realized it was, they pushed out the 4 shortly after.
@@DutchDiederik Yes, I have a problem with the picture quality from both the 2 and 3. They never seem quite in focus to me. Funnily enough, you can get away with it on a tv screen. It looks ok(ish) but when you switch to another camera, people do notice a difference in sharpness. I think they did really well with the 4. I use that one a lot. The only thing that I don’t like about it is the flare if the sun is in front of you. It’s very strange looking and detracts.
The OA1 was definitely the most bang-for-the-buck action camera ever created. Wish DJI continued with it as a budget line-up (with basic features and everyday carry specs), and just introduced a premium line-up (with more features and professional specs).
Thanks for another good camera review. I always look forward to your reviews of the new cameras coming out the most. So, did the Action 4 fix the focus issue the Action 3 had ?
they both look good the action 4 has more smoth footage colors looked the same most of the time when you were shooting the house the brick walls looked diffrent only you know what they look like in the sunlight did the action 1 looked like it was brighter than the action 4 some times they looked the same there is more distorstion in the video images on the action 1 besides that i could not tell much of a difference they both look great i will wait to get one after the gopro hero 12 comes out to compare one to the other
Looks like the focus issue has been resolved on the action 4 & as I don't own an action camera yet I'm definitely interested in this one, I guess we'll have to see if it overheats like the Gopro's etc first though. But so far I'm impressed with the quality of what I'm seeing.
I’m impressed also. My next video will be an EXTENSIVE look at the Action 4 , focus tests, resolutions, low light, and a massive comparison of it against a TON that f other action cameras. It’s over 30 minutes long and trying to trim it down a bit but lots of good information in it to make an educated decision whether to buy it or not.
Thanks for this very interesting comparison. First impressions is that the image of the Action 4 seems sharper (is it over sharpened, I wonder?) and more detailed than Action 1. The 4 also seems to have a better dynamic range. So far the 4 looks like a nice upgrade to the Action 1 which I still very much like 🙂
Humm, that's a tough question to answer. If you are still 100% happy with the OA1, then by all means save your money, if you think you would like a wider FOV, better audio and better image with that larger sensor and it's magnetic mounting system? then it is worth the upgrade. For ME, after using the Action 4, I would definitely upgrade over the OA1, but that's just from my experience with it. I'll explain more on this in a future video.
I think the 4 has slightly better sharpness and dynamic range. The rock steady seems fairly even to me. If you was in the market for a new action camera then I don't think you could get much better than the 4 but only because you cant buy a new 1 any more. The 1 was just so good when it came out that nothing has really been released that can put it to shame. The audio test surprised me. Your 1 seems to have worse audio than my one and the 4 was a lot better. How does it behave in wind. If the pre-amps have been increase does it suffer from more wind pick up?
I'll be covering wind noise in a future video :) I've been doing a LOT of testing with the Action 4 and filming examples and comparisons. Lot's of videos this next week, then at the end of the month, my full review and experience video.
the 4 here in these comparison has MORE sharpness.. i dont know if it realy is better.. for me it looks even oversharpend, so in many situations here in this video i liked the softer Action 1 Image more
good video!! i do see improvements in video quality on the action 4. to me it isnt enough to make me upgrade from my osmo action, i have made 100's of videos with the osmo and the video quality is good enough, but someday i will upgrade :) just not as long as my osmo still works
They have an audio adapter from Cynova that plugs into the USB-C port and has a 3.5 mm port for an external microphone. I did a video on it a few years ago.
@@WORTHITORNOT managed to source an official adapter and it appears to work as expected but I have noticed the mic icon disappear from the screen, could be a poor connection.
Wow. I get 4 is a lot sharper, has better color, slightly better shadow detail, etc. but...Why in the world is stabilization far better on 1, despite having a longer FL lens and 4 being on wide? Can't understand!
@@WORTHITORNOT i got an action one for sale for 210€ with 3 batteries, a combo charger, and a bunch of other things such as mounters, sticks and cases. Thats why i kinda wanna buy that one and also it has been proved over the years
@@WORTHITORNOT also the problem is that im in school and have limited funds i could buy a 4 but then id splash out completely and pretty much have nothing left over
It looks to me like contrast is higher on OA4 (could be adjusted in post for OA1), sharpness is identical except at close range where only the OA1 is out of focus (on your face). The 4 has certainly better low light and a bit more dynamic range. OA4 for the win in audio, low light and minimum focus distance !
So far I am very impressed with the Action 4, has better dynamic range but that should be because of the much larger sensor. Weird how the OA1 is very soft on focus up close when compared to the new Action 4.
@@StirfriedGerman Yes didn’t really notice it years ago as I used it more for filming stuff in front of me instead of at me lol. Thanks, after 7 years on RUclips I’m very appreciative but not so wrapped up in numbers anymore, well unless I get close to 100K :)

Thanks for the video. Question.....what about lower light recording on the Action 1 Vs. Action 4 ? That would be something that is important to me if I were to upgrade. Thanks again for the video. BTW - nice home and pool! :)
Thank you ! The Action 4 blows the Action 1 out of the water with it's low light performance, the Action 4 is such a great camera and I find myself reaching for it everytime.

it seems that Action 4 has more details and higher FOV (as expected) but it has also clarity cranked up much more which i am not really a fan of. dji stabilization software is a work or art. action cam digital stabilization became insanely good.
Not big difference in video and I think there is still out of focus so they didnt fix anything except audio a little bit Im still happy with my OA 1 and GP 11
I can definitely tell the Action 4 close focus is MUCH better than the Action 3 by a mile. Like that old saying, if it ain't broke, don't fix/replace it and the OA1 and Hero 11 are solid cameras
its a shame these companies are milking us with these epensive products that dont seem to be getting any better. i still have my action one and dont think its worth an upgrade
dang,,, just ordered an action 3 after watching all the 3v4 videos i watched and said,, theres basically no difference,, save some dough and get the 3,, after watching this maybe should have just got the 1 and saved even more dough..
Obviously the new have better stabilization and dynamic range. But imo its oversharpening. The Action 1 have more natural look, and its still capable, 12mp is enough.
Humm weird the action 1 looked out of focus on your face while you were talking, maybe it's just my cheap ass monitor. On your bike they both looked good but the new one looks better overall. Your pool looks good
Yes the OA1 does have soft focus up close and it's FOV is not as wide as the Action 4. On the e-bike they both look good but side by side, the Action 4 was a winner IMO
You know normally I would say " I don't think DJI will come out with another Action camera" but since the drone regulations are about to get much stricter here in the U.S. and around the world, they (DJI) might be making a business adjustment. The OA1 is still a great camera
oa1 still the best cam ever. but the oa3-4 is the Most user-friendly. If i had to choose one, had to be 4 for 20gain and HF But for image always 1 But need a tripod for horizontal

Yes the audio on the 4 is significantly better but everything else is very similar and I don't think you would notice the video quality difference if you didn't put them side by side.
Honestly thr OA 1 looks fine
Both are amazing 👏🏽
I'd say the action 4 has finally got the color pop or vibrant look as the GoPros do now..... To be honest DJI has always made a superior product at least concerning audio, hardware and software but now now The image quality is just as good if not better than a GoPro.
If you're starting out on a budget or maybe you don't want take the financial risk destroying/losing a action camera in certain shots a DJI action one is the way to go....
I have the action 1 and action 3 both very good cameras
This is how a side to side comparison should be made.
Thank you !
Thanks helped me a lot !
Glad it helped
You need to record in cine profile and grade to get the best look. Standard settings look like a cell phone video. I already got a cell phone. I need something that looks better than a cell phone.
These are action cameras and the majority of people don't use Log or Cine profile for the best footage, they want to turn it on, record and edit without color grading their footage, but yes, Log/Flat gies the most flexability
I have to ozmo 1 and I was worried I was missing something. After this video I can rest easy as the only difference I noticed was the ozmo 4 color was just a touch more saturated.
And a wider field of view and better audio, but the Osmo Action 1 is still a great camera
@@WORTHITORNOT i shoot today a new action 1 for 64 euros.
I have the DJI Osmo 1, but it has a habit of not recording audio maybe 50% of the time. Any clue why?
Humm I have not run into that issue at all. Have you contacted DJI about it?
I like Osmo 1 picture more, it feels more natural, not oversharpened
Here's footage from my first use:
ruclips.net/video/ha9jx7cwHFc/видео.html
Hi there, I'm going to assume you're using a fast U3 speed sd card? Slower cards cause more heat to build faster.
Hey David, yes the field of view is wider on the new Action 4 but if you're happy with the OA 1 then no reason to update.
My only hope was that action 1 had a superview option.
It would have been nice, but the Action 4 is fantastic
Great video beautiful home
Thank you so much 😀
Great demo and comparison.
Thank you Sir, hope you're staying cool in West Texas
Thank you for sharing. I wonder how good the night videos are and does it perform good in photography.
That video will be coming soon
I think I have a good one but not 100% sure now
Right on. I had an action 3 ...... I sent it back due to activation issues from my phne. Do you have any comment on the Action 3 to Action 4. Thanks with all respect I remember somethng about that. Bruce's Shop.
I hated the Action 3’s focus issue, this Action 4 is great all the way around
Thanks for the video nicely done... was thinking about upgrading to the OSMO 4 but now i think I'll hold off a bit only because 1. I have the OG Action and it still works great and has taken a beating and 2. I heard that the OSMO Action 5 is just on the horizon of being announced?
I have not heard that, but then again they released the Action 4 not long after the Action 3, but that "might" be because the Action 3 had a focus issue.
The Action 1 just looks more... true to life.
@@WORTHITORNOT Thanx. I feel better now about replacing it :)
yea..i'm still using my osmo 1 for moving shots but the sound is terrible... I use a Sony ZV1 for the talk shots but I could simply get a osmo 4 and fix the issue....
The Action 4's video, stabilization and audio are all fantastic IMO, definitely worth getting.
You can see why so many complained about the 2 and 3. The Action original was a good camera, but with the Action 4, Osmo have woken up Andre. I’m loving this one. It’s actually difficult to get a bad picture with it!
Hey Ian, the Action 4 has really impressed me. Hope you’re doing well
Hi Andre. Returning to the land of the living now. Had operation. Ablation, electrical remapping and reset heart. Able to walk for miles now and no longer frightened to leave house on my own. Still have one helluva bruise but got my energy back, thanks. Hadn’t realised just how bad it had become.
@@iancraig Yikes, glad you got it sorted out and feeling better and on the mend !
Well 4 years ago when the OA1 was released it was $349 , $399 for the Action 4 is a big jump in performance.
Yeah just like with their drone lineup.
Thanks for another good camera review. I always look forward to your reviews of the new cameras coming out the most. So, did the Action 4 fix the focus issue the Action 3 had ?
Yes, you’ll see that in my full review video tomorrow morning
Great strides made over the years!
Yes indeed
they both look good the action 4 has more smoth footage colors looked the same most of the time when you were shooting the house the brick walls looked diffrent only you know what they look like in the sunlight did the action 1 looked like it was brighter than the action 4 some times they looked the same there is more distorstion in the video images on the action 1 besides that i could not tell much of a difference they both look great i will wait to get one after the gopro hero 12 comes out to compare one to the other
The colors on the bricks of the house were most accurate with the Action 4. I'm curious what GoPro will bring with the Hero 12
The field of view (fish eye) is wider on the action 4. Is there a way to increase it on the action 1?
Unfortunately no
I still use my action 1. Trying to find reason to upgrade to action 4. Quality is better but action 1 is not bad at all..
The Action 4 is an excellent action camera for sure, the original Osmo Action 1 still works great considering it's age at this point.
I look forward to watching it thanks.
Thanks for this very interesting comparison.
First impressions is that the image of the Action 4 seems sharper (is it over sharpened, I wonder?) and more detailed than Action 1. The 4 also seems to have a better dynamic range.
So far the 4 looks like a nice upgrade to the Action 1 which I still very much like 🙂
The Action 4 definitely offers a lot more and worth the upgrade IMO
Andre, the new 4 is certainly a major upgrade. Now can I justify spending that much cash, when the OG still does all I ask of it?
Humm, that's a tough question to answer. If you are still 100% happy with the OA1, then by all means save your money, if you think you would like a wider FOV, better audio and better image with that larger sensor and it's magnetic mounting system? then it is worth the upgrade. For ME, after using the Action 4, I would definitely upgrade over the OA1, but that's just from my experience with it. I'll explain more on this in a future video.
Thanks for your thoughts Andre. Look forward to the next video.
Totally understand !
Great comparison. The biggest frustration I have with my osmo 1 is the lack of adapter to connect a mic 😢
They have an audio adapter from Cynova that plugs into the USB-C port and has a 3.5 mm port for an external microphone. I did a video on it a few years ago.
@@WORTHITORNOT thanks. It's basically impossible to find the official cynova version in the UK, too many fakes on eBay and Amazon.
Should i buy an action 1 as a first cam?
For the price that the action 1 is still going for, get the Action 4 and have a better camera

@@treenoss5066 You asked me my opinion and I gave it, now it's up to you on what to get.
@@WORTHITORNOT Yes minimum focus distance was alwats an issue on OA1. Congrats on 40K by the way 🤩

it seems that Action 4 has more details and higher FOV (as expected) but it has also clarity cranked up much more which i am not really a fan of.
dji stabilization software is a work or art. action cam digital stabilization became insanely good.
Yes action camera stabilization is crazy good now with the big 3 companies
The Action 1 is missing the wide angle. Otherwise, its still stands out.
