    I have a sister that is buried here. It would have been nice to visit while I was in New York, but was never allowed. I have moved to Las Vegas since and now call it home. RIP sis, so sorry you are here but after the death of dad and then mom, we all were spent and you had no insurance. To my dismay , this is where they told me you would be buried. Love you.

      Kabuki Kitsune There’s only information for about 70 thousand people. Everything else was lost due to heaven knows what. It’s being used now to bury Covid19 patients that have died. I actually would like to visit some of my patients resting place, but not yet. It’s too soon. Patients died without family or friends there. I can’t imagine the pain and grief of having someone buried there. To not be able to place flowers or just sit and be with your loved one is adding to the grief.

However, many burial records had been destroyed in a fire in 1977, so if your loved ones died before 1977, research might be difficult. Thanks for this brief documentary, sad but also interesting. I can't fathom that in the US, supposedly one of the most wealthy and developed countries in the world, and in the 21st century, still do jane and joe doe burials clandestinely in mass like this. Why not just cremate them with dignity and respect? These interments were still human beings, they still deserve to be treated with dignity and respect and not just "dump " their bodies (and in mass) underground in a lonely, secluded, inaccessible island away from civilization just because they were either poor people or Jane and John Doe, it wouldn't surprise me that a third world country would do this, but in the USA?

    • @williamharvey381
      @williamharvey381 5 лет назад +2

      I don't want to be cremated. Heart Island is just right for me. And, I don't think a single person buried out there is lonely...there's a million out there.I mean, if I were to move to NYC right now, and find myself dead, I'm sure my family would not claim my body to bring back to SC. If anything, they'd cremate me and be done with it. I want a natural burial, and if this is they way they do it on that island, count me in. But, I do understand the grieving families who don't know where to visit their loved one's graves.

    I would dearly have liked to grant my neighbor Phil's wish - to be buried next to his mother down South. Alas, he told us almost nothing about her, (Cheryl? Cherie?) and kept so many secrets. He even changed his own name from Earle Lavalle Morton Drew to Philip St. George. Denying his mixed race heritage as well. A year or so after he had died we received a bank statement. Showing more than enough money in the account to have carried out his wish - send his remains down south to be buried near his mother. But he never made arrangements or did anything about all this...and, we were not quite sure which city it was, Richmond/Raleigh (maybe?) or even where the family's cemetery was, or, the real names of the other people. I guess in the end, the Lord sorted it out with all of them in the Beyond. But we'd so have wanted to honor Phil's wish...rest well, buddy. On Hart Island, in potter's field.

I’m not going to delight you by dignifying your garbage with a back and forth exchange. However, it is astounding that you claim to know “the truth” and the complexities of the situation above - that they were greedy, didn’t try hard enough and were racist?!?
      For starters, you must be illiterate for all of the remorse, regret and respect expressed above to have escaped your grasp entirely. Or perhaps you have never felt normal human emotions and are thus Incapable of empathy?
      Either way, you are so far off the mark here, projecting your own bigoted, lazy, intolerant swindling ways onto others.
      Bottom line is this would be the very same shit you’d spew out if your mother were to ever tell you that she loves you.

    “People just disappear” that’s a silly thing the woman said. Dead people usually do disappear. Exactly, what is this guy complaining about? The people buried there were laid to rest. There’s was nothing more to be done. People who have a loved one there can petition the city to visit the grave of a loved one. This man calling on the city to make it a park is disrespectful. It is the final resting place for people who sadly did not have the means financially or family who knew at the time of their passing.

    People complain about this being disrespectful. I get it, it’s not pretty. But the alternative is mass cremation (which to Jews, Muslims and certain sects of Christianity is a no go) and scattering the ashes in the ocean. Those prisoners are also paid workers too. They make a few bucks a day which helps them at the commissary. I also don’t mean to sound some type of way to the families but the vast, vast majority of them didn’t care about their loved ones while they had the time on earth. Whether they were homeless, addicts, AIDS patients, prisoners, lonesome etc. Why all of a sudden do they care in death? Moral of the story: know what you’re signing when it comes to important documents. Read the fine print.
