Can Vegan Sushi Satisfy A Sushi Lover?

- Jasmine absolutely loves sushi. Can Merle come up with a vegan sushi recipe that Jasmine will approve of?
Tomato "Tuna" Sushi
INGREDIENTS
Tomato “Tuna”
4 large Roma tomatoes
½ cup low-sodium soy sauce
½ cup unsweetened rice wine vinegar
1½ teaspoons sugar
1 nori sheet, torn into small pieces
½ cup neutral oil, such as canola
Assembly
[Sushi Rice] (tasty.co/recip...)
1-2 tablespoons wasabi paste, or to taste
1-2 nori sheets, cut into ½-inch strips
PREPARATION
Using a sharp paring knife, cut a small “x” in the bottom of each tomato. Using the tip of the knife, carefully remove the core of each tomato.
Bring a medium pot of water to a simmer. Prepare an ice bath in a large bowl and set nearby. When the water is simmering, add the tomatoes and cook for 60-90 seconds, until the skin begins to peel away from the flesh near the “x” and core. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the tomatoes to the ice bath and let cool for 2-3 minutes, until no longer warm to the touch.
Carefully peel away the skins and discard. Cut the tomatoes into quarters and remove the seeds. You should be left with smooth, flat pieces of tomato flesh.
In a wide glass dish, combine the soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, sugar, torn nori, and oil.
Add the tomato to the dish and toss to coat. Refrigerate for at least 6 hours, up to overnight.
Remove the tomato from the fridge and let come to room temperature, about 30 minutes.
To assemble, take about 1 tablespoon of sushi rice and shape it between your palms to create an oblong shape, being careful not to pack the rice too tightly. Place a small dab of wasabi paste on top of the rice and top with a marinated piece of tomato “tuna”. Wrap a strip of nori around the middle, if desired. Repeat with the remaining ingredients.
Enjoy!

She's my favorite judge so far. Jasmine really appreciates what the vegan options are and gives full truth about how delicious they all are ON THEIR OWN but is also honest about the comparison to the real thing.
Beef and chicken have really great vegan substitutes nowadays, but seafood - no. I have found no vegan sub that replaces it. Some are really delicious, yet taste nothing like what they are imitating. I've been vegan for years and still remember the taste of salmon and crab.
Vicious Leash I have no idea if it’s available where you are but the Vegan Zeastar Zalmon sashimi is so good and really resembles salmon!! i am not vegan but am happy to swap to this for my pokebowls/home made sushi cus it tastes just like the real deal
@@kira7705 I've never heard of it! I google searched it and appears it hasn't reached the US yet. Oh how I hope it expands this direction. Thanks for the info!
very accurate, surprised not a lot more people are liking this
If you go purely by taste alone with all the saturated fat and cholesterol laden in animal flesh (human animals love the taste of saturated fat) of course we will all choose to eat fish flesh sushi. But saving the ocean and the sea animals is the whole point of veganism. It's not just about the taste comparison. The funny thing is, once you wean yourself away from saturated fat from animal flesh, you crave it far less and your palette actually become more sensitive and refined. It's like of you stop eating sugar laden dessert you taste the natural sweetness of fruit better
Vegans like Merle are the ones who will make the greatest impact in my opinion. Very fun and informative, rather than severe and pushy. She makes you feel like wanting to change without forcing you, just because she is so nice and well-intentioned. This is coming from a vegan of nearly 4 years. I appreciate this creative activism. Keep up the amazing videos! I love em❤️🤟🏼
One of my best friends went vegan this year and honestly she's brill I'm just slowly making changes to my diet and I try to do at least 2 vegan dinners a week now she's not pushy at all that's how to really convert people just show them the alternative to what they already eat xx
@Riri Webb most vegans aren’t pushy. Glad you’re making some changes :)
Compassionate Living Yeah I agree, most vegans aren’t pushy. Some people can come off as pushy though, especially if you’re dealing with a defensive meat eater who is easily threatened😬 Then the real canines come out lol
Erin is quaking
Compassionate Living I agree but i feel the angry pushy vegans usually speak the loudest so it seems like all vegans are like that.
How to be a honest without hurting someone's feeling: JASMINE
K
HONESTLY
that girl has no lips and she looks miserable
@@iwillsleepwithyourman94 thats rich coming from someone with that kind of dn lol... keep the negativity to yourself.
ya i need to learn from her,ive broken some hearts
I made vegan "tuna" from a red bell pepper and it has a great texture and neutral taste. You simply slice the red bell pepper in half and roast it in the oven until the skin becomes a bit blackened and the pepper is soft. Peel and discard the skin. I imagine if you then marinade it in Merle's concoction, it would taste even more divine!
That sounds delicious
I love grilling bell peppers! Especially if you add some oil and vinegar to it as a marinade before. My favorite vegan sushi place used bell peppers on top of the rice too, but for some reason I haven’t tried that before. Certainly will be now!
I love pepper, I haven't had sushi for two years because when I go out to eat the substitutes are always plain and not worth it, I should start making my own because that sounds awesome.
oh im so trying this
Tip for roasting peppers, just put them in whole until the skin goes black over maybe half of it, straight out of the oven stick them under cold running water and the skins will pucker and some right off, you can wash out the seeds really easily. Makes it easier when you are doing a few peppers at a time
I love her honesty. We get so caught up imitating the taste of something that we forget it has an amazing taste on its own. I do the same with my boyfriend (he's not vegan) and get a bit sad that it does not taste like the 'real thing'. I think it does ,but I actually don't remember the taste because I'm 7 years vegetarian 😂
That's so correct, for whatever the reasons anyone is or not vegan (and i hope a lot vegan ingredients are enriched with exclusive to animals nutrients like b12) there is no need to have "just like non-vegan" vegan food, vegan food have its own flavour and is tasty at it's own way
that's why I hate beyond/impossible meat (although I'm glad there are vegetarian options at chain restaurants now) because it just tastes so "meaty" and that doesn't appeal to me after 5 years
@@fluorescentadolescent2189 i just hope for the time people learn to accept that vegan food is good and non vegan food is also good but they are different and it's OK, for example: "vegan tuna"...tuna is tuna and tofu is tofu, there is absolutelly NOTHING WRONG to call it a tofu roll and just because it's tofu it doesn't mean is worst than tuna, both are good in their own way.
That's the thing I really don't like in a lot of vegan / vegetarian joints. Plant-based food is delicious on its own. There are tons of mind-blowing plant-based dishes around the world that don't go as "vegan" , they are just local specialties. While I get that doing vegan substitutes may help some people transition to plant-based diet, and it's always a bit of a sport to see if you can recreate something, but when you get "vegan cordon bleu with vegan caviar and veganaise and vegan cheesecake with vegan latte for dessert" all day, it's just sad. As if plant-based food is not good enough on its own.
Hi fellow vegetarian i became a vegetarian since born so i never tasted meat. So i do not need to worry abt this
The energy in the interaction between Merle and Jasmine is the typical sign of a strong and close friendship. And quite contagious as well.
B Ningthouja 100% agreed
I love how honest Jasmine is and so not rude like at all. I also find refreshing how she appreciates the vegan version for what they are.
Jasmine: I am gonna give up non-vegan sushi
Merle: WHAT?! Wait, what???
Jasmine: FOR A WEEK!!!
Yo , 1.7 k likes and not one comment. Have my comment cozygirl. (:
@@teglicas1422 i was gonna say the same thing wtf is going on here
damn I love Jasmine's input in this one. Some people can't seem to be honest yet respectful at the same time but she definitely does.
I feel like vegan alternatives are like the film adaptations of the food world. When you see a film adaptation of your favorite book, it’s tempting to scrutinize and compare it to its source material. But adaptations are their OWN piece of art. You should try to understand/maybe even appreciate it for what it is without constantly comparing it to the book, you know?
yea
Wow a great way to look at it thank you
great analogy
I’d say it’s more like a film remake. It looks the part, but is nowhere near as good as the original.
this was a pretty spot-on comparison
I LOVE this! Jasmine and Merle both have such a strong charisma! Definitely enjoyed home edition. Yum!
Omg i love her. She's so honest and is just straight forward. More jasmineeeee on this show!!!
I like how she's actually honest. I feel like previous people have always felt bad and made sure to rate yours higher based off of guilt.
thank you so much for making these videos! i am not vegan, but im trying to make a difference in my diet by eating vegan food at least once a week. these videos are really helpful for a newbie like me. thank you so much!!❤️
I’m a pescatarian but one of my favorite kinds of sushi is sweet potato tempura it’s so good!!! You don’t miss the fish at all tbh
My favourite tempura is pumpkin!! But by itself, not in sushi haha 😋
@@hsmloverzanesssa Kabocha squash is freaking amazing!
Jini H yessssssssss that’s also my favorite!! I get so sad when they don’t have it in the mixed tempura cuz sometimes i even prefer it to shrimp 😩😩😩
sweet potato tempura rolls are the best! I also like it with eel sauce (it's vegan!) I also like cucumber avocado rolls, avocado mango rolls, & inari, and near me we have a place that does vegan tuna, vegan cream cheese, vegan mayo for rolls, so good!
I love how honest Jasmine is, not simply giving compliments with no feedback
Jasmine is awesome at being honest without hurting any feelings ♥️
I’d love to see Merle make vegan macarons with aquafaba.
Jasmine’s laugh is so infectious! I laughed every time she laughed!!!😆 For NO reason!🤷🏽♀️😩😂
This is gonna sound weird, but Merle is a whole sun beam ☀️✨
It does
it's not weird. she exudes such warmth a feel-good vibes. very jealous of aria lolll
I love that the ice bath is like the 4 little ice cubes taking a bath😂😂
Merle.. Thank you sooo much.. I love your passion and you just feel very real.. My problem with veganism is the guilt for slipping up.. I call myself vegan for 30 days now and ive already failed once.. but the planet would be in way better shape with 1000 people being 95% vegan in stead of 100 people for 100%. You made me feel welcome and inspired me to experiment more in cooking and love the fact that you dont judge.. Much Much THX and love from the Netherlands
Yeah, that's why I call myself vegan-ish! I buy vegan food but am flexible for social occasions, holidays and travelling cause that's just a lot more sustainable for me, personally. I wish people realised that they could do that, because I think more people would be willing to try it out then.
there’s actually a new word for that called flexitarian! basically almost 100% vegan except in certain situations where it’s harder to avoid all animal products
@UnaveganainTicino well done you!
You guys have such great work chemistry! It was so pleasurable watching you cook together!
Goodful is honestly one of my favourite youtube channels and it's all because of folks like Merle and Jasmine. I love the fact that Merle tries her absolute hardest and always takes feedback so graciously. Jasmine had AMAZING points about vegan food as well, it always tries to imitate when it can hold its own. I definitely see that, it's hard to come at something thinking it will taste like beef, chicken, fish etc and then it just having a completely different and its own unique and complex flavour. I'm so excited to splurge and try to make my own vegan sushi.
Merle: We're gonna cut this in half...
...like so
Me:...like that
Tabitha is just contagious 😅
Cause that’s your business
LOL same while this was being edited
@@rmg468 Rachel!!!!🤗🤗🤗🥰🥰
Love her honesty! I also really like this show. I am not vegan and don’t plan to become one, but so far, all of these recipes look so tasty.
I just want to say thank you. This channel is everything I want right now to help me try more vegan options. I truly think vegan is the future
If this video was made because of quarantie I have to give a big thumbs up. The format is very entertaining. I like the idea of "cooking together with a friend" over facetime etc. Quarantining yourself and keeping social distance does not have to be dull. It can also be very inventive and fun :)
I just love the way how Merle❤️❤️ speaks. It's so fast n so adorable. It seems like she's actually talking slow to make the viewers follow. I'm just rewinding the words just just to learn how to!! U know!! 😍😍❤️❤️#food #vegan #veganfood #merle u r the girl!!
Jasmine is mad pretty 😍 and I appreciated the honest reviews
Let’s all appreciate that homemade concoction Merle has to hold her phone while doing FaceTime. That’s how you know she’s the MacGyver of veganism.
lmao, merle always uses the “glue on your hand” comparison.
Omg I can FINALLY eat. Sushi( I’m highly allergic but I’m not allergic to seafood)
Are you allergic to fish?
highly allergic but not to seafood...
you left out the part where you say what your actually allergic to.
bluemoon pixie probably the gluten in sushi :)
Sylvie G sushi are gluten free 🤷🏻♀️
delfine99 some are and some are not :)) sometimes gluten can be found in the sauces our soy sauce restaurants use and the slightest bit of contamination can cause someone to have a reaction :) GoiNg to a strictly gluten free sushi restaurant or making your own is the safest choice
I love jasmine and her honesty.
I love what jasmine says about calling food what it is. Totally agree that if you handed me that "crab" handroll and not told me it was vegan I would have been disappointed, but would have loved and enjoyed it more if I knew it was mushrooms. 👏👏♥️🍄
Sushi doesn't have to have animal products in it. Sushi just mean "With rice." Sashimi means "Without rice." I'm interested what's gonna be in these sushi rolls, though.
EDIT: I stand corrected.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sushi#History
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sashimi#Origin
But there's also this...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sashimi#Ingredients_other_than_raw_fish_meat
Jubei Kibagami Fez - I didn’t know that! Ty for the info :)
what... Sashimi just refers to the fish slices, the kanji for sashimi is literally 刺身 which means the 'pierced body' of a fish.
I don't want to be that guy but ... sushi means "Sour Rice" ( because of the vinegar ).
Sushi comes from a Japanese word meaning "sour rice," and it's the rice that's at the heart of sushi, even though most Americans think of it as raw fish. In fact, it's the word sashimi that refers to a piece of raw fish.
I stand corrected. I learned this a long time ago and it seems more history came to light about sushi and sashimi since then.
I hope wikipedia is a considered reputable info, because I can't find anything more definitive.

Jasmine is so adorable and pretty i cant :
I just made spicy vegan tuna out of tomatoes yesterday. Such a yummy way to make vegan sushi 🌱🍣🔥
Hey, Goodful... try to promote reusable chopsticks!! like the metal straws substitute plastic ones
I'm a vegetarian, and I really agree with the "why imitate" sentiment. I used to eat a lot of imitation stuff - impossible burgers, vegan nuggets, etc - but mostly those things are heavy and expensive and make me feel sick, and they don't taste like the original anyway. Just eat fresh and delicious foods and the vegetarian/vegan eating experience will go much better for you.
Thank you! I feel the same way but I also wasn‘t a fan of most meats before going vegetarian but I think if we need to make things taste similar to meat so that more People eat vegetarian or vegan then we should try...
After you've been vegetarian/vegan for a long time imitation meat starts to lose its appeal 🤣
I don't even like the smell
Yes, but also most people don’t want to eat less animals/animal products because they like the taste so much, so having imitations helps less animals be brutally tortured and killed.
Made the eggplant nigiri yesterday as I had a spare eggplant in the fridge and I was honestly blown away by the texture, the taste... Really delicious and thanks a lot for the recipe. Will definitely make it again! 😊
In Laos, I had vegan sushi with natto (fermented adzuki beans, Japanese style) inside. It was simply to die for. Mind you that I used to live in Japan 20 years ago, when I wasn't vegan and I used to eat sashimi and sushi quite often so I know the difference. The restaurant owner in Laos was Japanese and his sushi simply delicious! A big hug to both of you. 🤗😊👌💖
They have such a delightful friendship
Aria has def rubbed off on Merle during quarantine. A lot of her mannerisms i totally see Aria doing too!
You got to love it when Meryl does her happy dance.
this was a treat the sushi, Jasmine and, all the laughs. I would love to try these out and I love a nice sushi roll myself.
Jasmines reaction to the fishing fact and saying she would make it even if it didn’t taste good was hilarious and so on brand for both of them
this made me CRAVE sushi (even more than i already was). i haven’t had it in more than 3 months );
Same girl. I want sushi real bad right now, but I'm too paranoid to order ANY food until this Covid situation is over. I haven't had even a single meal that was made out of my kitchen for 3 months.
I haven't had it once since 2020
I haven’t had it ever XD
well at least you have something to look forward to haha
lea sugar true! although i have been vegetarian my whole life so it wasn’t really something that i felt like i was missing out on 😆
I loved the video! And I always love Merle’s vegan trivia! Can you guys make those questions about climate change and veganism available on your website? Thank you so so much for all the amazing content you regularly post!
I made these for my school lunch and they turned out really good!!! It also made the kitchen smell super good for a while lol
Love that shes honest!!
merle saying "like so" gave me big time Tabitha Brown recipe vibes in the best way ❤❤❤❤❤
I never even try to make any of these nor do I plan to but watching the videos is so fun and Merle rocks
When I lived in Milan, Italy, I could find delicious seaweed from the North of France and Britain. They were sold in a glass jar in small flakes whose color ranged between green and red. I put the flakes on pasta dishes as a substitute for grated parmesan, the taste was incredibly delicious, really delicious! Marla, from sister to sister, experiment with local seaweed and not Japanese ones. Seaweeds are everywhere, they are highly nutritious and can be used in different recipes! I 'm Italian and I grew up eating fabulous food thanks to my mother who is an excellent cook (she won a couple of cooking contests in the company she used to work for!) 😉💖😁
loved their energy so much.
its interesting because i never had sushi until i became vegan
Me too! Never had it until I was vegetarian.
before i went even vegetarian i only had vegetarian rolls (and california) cause the raw fish scared me too much
Amazing! I'm inspired to order sushi tomorrow! When I ate fish my husband and I made sushi at least once per week- now that's I'm plant-based and it's hard to just eat avocado rolls and watch him eat real good sushi we rarely do it. But now I'm inspired to try it and learn- but tomorrow I'm ordering some from a local restaurant!
I've been a vegetarian for over a year and the only thing I truly miss is sushi 😭
Don't miss out! There's a ton of great vegan/vegetarian sushi!
Karen Fairholm like what? i’m a vegetarian and i’m thinking about being a pescatarian just for sushi but it’s still an animal😔😂
@@faydavid5726 I understand you as I love sushi as well, but I regularly eat veggie sushi now and don't miss the fish version at all. It depends what places you have near to you - some only offer 'plain' options like cucumber and avocado rolls which admittedly aren't quite as good as regular sushi. But quite a number of places which are not even vegan oriented have much more exciting veggie sushi on their menu. It's worth having a look and trying a few options.
Having a pretty severe seafood allergy but also a former sushi lover, this video made me so happy!!!!!
14:05 that's because she cooked it, you should make it again for her to taste after quarantine.
After I vent vegetarian ive had searching for some places with vegan or vegetarian sushi, but I havent do it yet, bit after this video i probably would do.
PLEASE I just wanted to give you the biggest thumbs up to the intro (and the rest!), I hate intros but when I tell you I LAUGHED so hard when Merle called Jasmine!!!! Its was soooo funny great job for entertaining like that!!!
Merles making to tomatoe peeling look so easy and not messy
Jasmine is just adorable
Jasmine is like a sunshine kind of a friend.
Jasmine is adorable I need a Jasmine in my life
Merle taping her phone to a stand is life😂😂 also hi Merle love your videos 💜
we love honesty, also that is one reason why some non vegan don't like when vegan food is called what ever non vegan thing it is (fish, chicken, cheese), but if they can get over that barrier, like she said, it's really easy to appreciated it (love my cream of carrot potato pasta aka vegan mac and cheese)
Wow I can't believe that vegan sushi could taste so delicious and has a beautiful presentation
I think Jasmine hit the nail on the head with the mushroom "crab" - just let things be their own thing! I think utilizing the ideas behind making something "like" something else can lead to innovating ways to prepare foods, but call it what is! That hand roll would sound amazing just called as mushroom hand roll! And I think it puts people off of vegan/vegetarian food when the thing doesn't taste like what it's called.
Will definitely try this recipe but also i guess quarantine is really becoming handy Merle finally learned how to juggle so proud
I have almost the same recipe for the tomatoe one. But I never tried eggplant sushi! It looks amazing, definitly going to try
From a Vegetarian, that loved meat, I really recommend to try go vegetarian sometime! You start feeling so much better with yourself and your environment!
I dislike when people saying going vegan is easy, it all depends on where you live and financial status. I went vegan after being vegetarian for about 4 months and I can say that going vegetarian is more commonly easy and available to more people. I find my mind is clearer and my body is healthier after I stopped eating animals.
I didn't mean to reply to this comment sorry
This is untrue for a lot op people, going vegetarian can also make people go sick depending on any conditions/allergies/medication you already have! Please talk to a a doctor before making a huge dietary change ^^
I like that the people are actually honest and not just like “it’s the best!” Every time. Bc I’m vegan and there’s lots of delicious things but not everything is gonna b exactly the same that’s just how it is.
YES! Jasmine, thank you. Why try to imitate non-vegan food. Just call it what it is and I think people will appreciate it so much more!
Honestly, I’m more put off at the thought of a “crab replacer” or an “eel replacer” than I am a fried mushroom roll or marinated eggplant.
Replacements, substitutions and alternatives just give me hand burger helper vibes. Much prefer the honesty approach.
No disrespect to Merle either! I love her trying to trick people into believing in her alternatives and I adore the effort and research she puts into these recipes, but from a restaurant and menu point of view I’d rather honesty :)
because its a fun video to make
T H totally! I’ve got nothing against Merle or the content. They’re some of my favourite videos to watch!
I’m just pointing out that the vegan food industry might not get so much slack if they stop trying to replicate everything and sell it as it is.
But I guess it goes both ways. There’s some straight up fruit/veg haters who would never try a fried mushroom roll but would happily be tricked into thinking it was crab 🤷♀️ 😊
I just got a great recipe /cookbook called Sushi Modoki. It’s all vegan sushi. The food looks beautiful. Wish there was a shogun near me. Their food looks incredible.
I love this duo
My favorite food is sushi too!!!!! It's amazing!!!!!!!!!!
I love these! A bit of everything
That was a really good trivia to know! I had no idea!
Merle is such an amazing human presence.
I'm not vegan, but as a sushi lover, I could definitely seeing this as a great option for pregnancy when you are craving sushi
I really appreciate how merle taped the hell out of that phone to keep it in place
I love how jasmine gives her real opinion!
Tabetha brown’s sushi recipe is THE ONE!!
The tomato one is actually super good. I made it for dinner and was a success 😊
My friend is a sushi lover and I made him go a vegan sushi place. He said I eat sushi twice a week and it was the best sushi he ever tasted
Jasmines enthusiasm is so cute lol
How did I get addicted to watching these videos? I'm not even vegan! But I want to try it now lol
Omg can we please talk about the clock at 2:24?! I freaking love ittttt
I can't even tell the time on a normal clock, let alone this one
Jasmine is a great sport!!
Thanks for these crazy vegan experiments :D Now I need to try them =)
Lmao Jasmine was so damn blunt and yet still so sweet 😂😂😂.
Merle is the best though! I love this series!
I love these episodes.
Trying sushi changed my life, no cap.
Jasmine is the happiest and nicest judge who would never agree with you🤣🤣🤣
Huntington Ramen and Sushi in Fullerton, CA has the best vegan sushi I've ever had. They are not a vegan restaurant, but they have a huge vegan menu.
Jasmine has the best reactions lol
Some of the best sushi I've had was in Sligo in Ireland - fried (vegan) kimchi in shushi is awesome.
Great! Loved the little vegan trivia piece!
