    Great video and very helpful. What I'm still trying to figure out is how to handle items I sell with sales tax but have already paid sales tax on at the time of purchase. Especially if I've marked them up. I have the simplest version of QB online and really don't want to pay for the version with inventory tracking. Also, some of my items are what I'd consider inventory items where I'll track quantities elsewhere, maybe a spreadsheet. Other items are non inventory such as screws which I didn't want to track quantities of.

    Is the question about what state your collecting from about where your clients live or what state you are selling from? I have clients in different states but I’m always seeing from Michigan.

    So, Oklahoma allows the collection of sales/use taxes at both the city and county levels. However, QBO does not have these cities/counties broken out within the automated sales tax program. Does this mean I need to create a custom sales/use tax for each of these cities/counties? If so, what a massive pain.

      I don't see a reply from intuit--I have the same problem/question. Submitting the monthly sales tax return for my Shopify sales is awful! Since I don't invoice out of QBO am I better off turning off automated sales tax, export a .csv out of Shopify, and sort it by jurisdiction to prepare the return?

      If you don't see your location in the Agency list, you do not have to register for that local separately. Nexus at the state gives you nexus at the locals. In other words, registering at the state will also apply to that local. This is better than creating a custom rate becuase QBO will track and update any rate changes for you.

    How much does this software cost? I want to start offering services like automotive module programming to all the states in USA. It's only me for now. Maybe I'll hire a helper later on.
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    At the end you said the tax is paid, but I thought QBO did not file or pay the tax. So please clarify that when you said paid, you meant that the payment is recorded in QBO, but not necessarily yet forwarded to the tax agency. Also, do I still need to add cities as tax agencies?

    • @quickbooks
      @quickbooks  2 года назад +1

      Thank you for taking a moment to post your question, Linda!
      Yes, you're correct. QuickBooks Online will only record the Sales Tax Payment for you inside QBO, but does not remit the payment on your behalf.
      With that being said, some localities/districts will indeed charge a seperate sales tax rate apart from what the state agencey designates, or, some products/services may be taxed at a different rate than the standard.
      For the differed locality rate, this is typically accounted for depending on whether your business is origin based or destination based, which means that ultimately, the alternate rate will be calculated based on the location of the sale (this address can be entered in the Location of Sale section on your invoice or sales reciept) or the location of the customer. For more information on how this works for different locality rates, you can visit: quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/sales-taxes/us-sales-tax-sourcing/L7tEnyJrs_US_en_US?uid=l3lymgwf!
      For a different sales tax rate on certain products/services, this is accounted for by selecting a designated Sales Tax Category that's applicable to the particular product/service when you set the item up in QBO, which you can learn more about right here: quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/sales-taxes/add-sales-tax-category-products-services/L66p3ybk9_US_en_US?uid=l3lypj2t!
      I hope this helps clarify!

    Hi, I'm starting to set up QBO for our company and I have a few questions:
    We're required to pay a local tax as well as a state tax. Would QBO recognize both taxes through the automated feature?
    Also, some of our customers are exempt only from the local tax, would QBO let us choose the exact tax or amount that client is exempt from through the automated feature or would we need to add both tax rates as custom rates?
    Thanks in advance,

    • @quickbooks
      @quickbooks  2 года назад

      Hello there, Valeria! These are all great questions.
      QuickBooks Online will walk you through a sales tax set up to specify any state and local sales tax that you need to collect. If you have any customers who are exempt from sales tax, there's a little drop-down option to choose on the sales tax section of the invoice that shows (0% exempt) which can be selected whenever you need to use it.

    My previous accountant set up district taxes as 'custom' rates. Is that the incorrect way to do it? Should I delete the custom rates and let quickbooks automatically figure the district tax based on the clients' address? She also set up the custom 'district' tax rates with the entire tax rate including state tax. I am having major issues with sales tax and are wondering if part of the reason is because it was set up incorrectly?

      Hey there. When it comes to setting up sales tax and how it needs to be set up can depend on different kinds of businesses. I would suggest possibly reaching out to another accountant and double checking with them in the event you are worried about how it is set up. All the best. -Kyle

    so in Texas we collect state and local taxes. Do I put combine in for sales tax or does it automatically dispense to state and local? I"m confused on how to set up sales tax still. We just switched from desktop to online QB and after looking into this further I believe my grandmother had it set up wrong this whole time!! she had it set to Township/Woodlands 7.25% when really they only get 1% and Texas gets 6.25%. So I need help :(

    hello, I have a question if I pay the NJ sales tax in qb online, still I have to present the form at the agency and pay it in the state too, that is, the same payment comes out twice? Thank you

    • @quickbooks
      @quickbooks  2 года назад +1

      Hey, Lina.
      Currently, QuickBooks Online will only allow you to record your Sales Tax Payments and does not automatically pay them for you electronically. This means that while you can record that the Sales Tax has been paid, and print the check to send to the agency, you'll still need to send the check to the agency or pay the agency electronically from the states website. For more information, you can visit: quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/sales-taxes/manage-sales-tax-payments-quickbooks-online/L91njDRsj_US_en_US?uid=l95rmlte.

    My Taxes page doesn't have the Economic Nexus button. How do I get that?

    • @quickbooks
      @quickbooks  2 года назад +1

      Hello there, and thanks for taking a moment to visit our channel!
      Not all states require businesses to pay Sales Tax. There are a few different factors, like the state your business is located in, and the type of business you have, that determine if you have a sales tax nexus or if this button would be included in your Sales Tax Center.
      For more information, please visit: (quickbooks.intuit.com/r/taxes/nexus-guide/).

    This seems like a massive pain for ecommerce in shopify, an invoice for each purchase? Also basing tax on location isn’t how every state does it, my nexus us everything I sell online is taxed to new mexico.

      I'll be happy to pass along your feedback on invoices for each customer purchase. However, you should be able to set up Automated Sales Tax for your location and when asked if you need to collect sales tax outside of your state, select Yes or No. You can find more info about that here: quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/sales-taxes/set-collect-sales-tax-quickbooks-online/L1Nu6wYj7_US_en_US. I have set up my customer as a tax-exempt "Federal Government". Now when I file my taxes on California's state website they are asking me how much sales I did with the Federal government. I can't seem to find that information in the sales tax liability report. How can i get the total for federal government

    • @quickbooks
      @quickbooks  2 года назад

      I'm happy to help you out with this, Mozi.
      It sounds like you may be looking for your taxable versus non-taxable sales totals. When you run your Sales Tax Liability Report, you can look at the 'Tax Amount' column to view the total tax amounts you collected from your customers. This includes totals for state rate and local tax rates (such as city, county, and/or district).
      To get a detailed look at what you owe, you can select any tax amount. A transaction report opens that shows how much tax you charged in each sale, and also shows you more info, like customers, transaction dates, and tax rate.
      Then you can subtract the taxable sales total from the overall sales total to help you find your non-taxable sales total.
      If you still need help, please feel free to get in touch with our Technical Support Team by phone or chat through the 'Help(?)' icon > 'Contact Us' within your account, and we'd be happy to assist you further.
