  • I have always been skeptical of the value of eBay promoted listings. Today I show how to work out how much eBay promoted listings actually make sellers in terms of sales & profit. Wondering if you should promote eBay listings in 2021? Here is the truth on that topic, that all eBay sellers / resellers should know.

    WOW. You just won my heart, mate. I've been a subscriber here for a long time, but now I'm a fan for life. I am very analytical, and sometimes I think I analyze too much... until I saw what you did in this video. You know how to conduct a "controlled experiment", then analyze it properly. Your analysis was quite complicated, but I was able to follow & understand every step, & it's going to help my eBay business. I think many sellers just go by their "gut feelings" of what they THINK will work, but you dig deep & figure out what REALLY works. No doubt, it's going to pay off in your long-term success. Great stuff. Thanks.

      I agree with you 100%. Samson broke it down like an accountant and showed what I’ve never seen before. I believe we all need to learn from Samson and understand our numbers. I did medical accounting for 30 years and it was complicated but I completely understood him.

    Great info mate! Personally I've never promoted any listings but have considered it. It's a very simplistic view but I feel like I already pay eBay to promote my listings. That's literally their only job after I do all the hard yards lol. I do genuinely think though if you're consistently listing good stuff sales will be great without promoting listings

    • @SamsonTV
      @SamsonTV  3 года назад +1

      Cheers mate, I agree that promoting is supplementary. However I do think it is worth it to promote at least some products. All depends on what you sell though, rare/sought after items sell themselves when priced right. $25 branded T-Shirts (my average item) take a bit more work, so I think I will continue to promote them.

    I always use promoted listings to move up the search results, then after a few sales I reduce or remove the promotions. I think promoted listings on items with multiple quantities or replenishable items is probably worth while at some stage in the products sales history but it’s interesting to see how the promos impact reselling. If I pigeon holed a buyer into two categories; the buyer who selects lowest price vs the buyer who buys the top listed product, I would guess the lowest price has the edge so I tend to try this first before I promote. I’m going to have to experiment some more

    • @SamsonTV
      @SamsonTV  3 года назад

      Great insight, that's the way to do it with replenishables. You clearly have that figured out, with one-offs its not as straight forward.

    so i've tinkered with promoted lately with the help from an actual ebay employee who reached out and works in this area. i had done 1% promoted haphazardly without any real expectation, but have raised to 4% max cap and then had record impressions/hits and more sales in a typically slow period. we then raised it from 4 to 6%, expecting even more of everything - but instead, my impression and promoted hits took off, while my organic hits and impressions actually went down and sales totally tanked for some reason. it was completely unexpected given all the possible things that would have happened. so, there's definitely some sort of algorithm risk when you go too high, it seems like ebay will leech off your good traffic in order to give you promoted traffic (which creates fees on almost every sale then) and that can be a problem as promoted traffic are more random buyers and organic would be those who are truly seeking out your item. currently settled in at 5% and getting about 50/50 organic and promoted and certainly not messing with that number for a while given what just happened.

    In the US 1-2% promotion on generic clothing is not enough. So much competition that to get eyeballs on it and in order to convert to a sale, promotion needs to be close to trending. Which is what I think you said. I sell a lot of vintage costume jewelry. Due to the huge volume of this category on ebay, I have to get close to trending otherwise they will just get lost in the millions of others, however it has forced me to either raise my prices by a few dollars or take less profit, seems a bit counter productive to do promoted listing and then raise prices, but trending rates do serious financial damage to the small seller imo. However if you're selling 100+ items a day, then it's obviously worth it. Thanks for the great content, new viewer here and a Top Rated Seller on ebay with a small 400 item store and growing.

    This might be a stupid question - but does promoted listings affect your off-site views? At first I assumed that your listing had to be promoted in order to show up in ads off-site (like when someone googles something off ebay, in google ad boxes on any website that's associated with your item, etc.)

  • @davidgarren6567
    @davidgarren6567 Год назад

    Well we got a problem with that promote listing I had at least three of my auctions promoted every one of them had one bid. After they sold I found out they've been relisted through the other person that bought them. The ones I don't promote had more than three or four bids that was way better than the promo. I'm not going to promote nothing again on eBay plus I'm going to make my own website and be more fair with my price. I'm going to find a way to get my own auctions going and hopefully I'll get more traffic and get people to sell on my website. And I will show I could do better than eBay. I think that promo they just want to make extra money off people's stuff you know when you try to resell something and we trying to make money we don't need it on that promo stuff. There's no need to eBay to start that, that's a money gimmick for eBay

    I promoted an iPhone 11. Can't remember the percentage. But it was low. I listed the iPhone, including 5 phone cases and screen protector. The item sold, but eBay took $100 out of that sell. WTH!
    So, you charge me fees already and I still need to promote my item. Then you take a big chunk of my money.
    Never promoted again. This is why I sell my products on other sites and it feels good to make money. I personally believe. Because I'm not promoting. EBay is purposely not pushing my products. I suggest you sell your products on other sites and create your own separate store. Good Luck!

    Hey Samson, just a little note, understand eBay are keeping Final Value Fees for unpaid items... if you're item sells, and is not paid... the 'unpaid item assistant' is programmed to allow a percentage to pass through without casing it..... and it's a large percentage. So sellers whom miss the 30 day window, pay the full FVF. More profit for eBay, that's what it's about. Maybe time for an investigative report on this. Part of seller management program, for all sellers, set a 20 day alarm to clear unpaids... or, pay the fees...! eBay is hiding this cheat, in the name of profit for them.

      I would say that 7 days is not a long enough time to know for sure. Maybe leave it for another week & then try the trending rate for two weeks. Then if both don't have a positive result, observe what did well with promotions and what didn't. Use that info to work out what to promote in the future or whether you promote at all.
