- The Return (Kikyo) released in 2019. This film was directed by Shigemichi Sugita. The film stars Tatsuya Nakadai playing an old samurai that is returning to pick up his sword for one last time. Hoping to make up for his past mistakes.

Great to see Tatsuya Nakadai still killing it!!!
it will be tragic when he dies
Legend is the only way to describe this incredible actor.
Tatsuya Nakadai is Japan's most brilliant actor ever. He has tremendous range and is extremely handsome. He is wonderful in The Return and still has his unique brand of magic and power.
Minfune will always be my favorite but Nakadai is absolutely incredible. Their time on screen together is some of the best work committed to film. Nakadai is an absolute legend and truly the last beacon of a bygone era of samurai cinema.
One of most professional, versatile actors i've seen and one most espressive and good looking men i've seen, and I don't say because he is famous
Nakadai GOAT! One of the best actors out there. Thank you for this review. I will check it out.
I have A Duel Tale arriving this week from SamuraiDVD and I did see The Return listed when I was exploring the site. I will definitely order this one next. I too, thought of your reference to Nakadai's performance in Ran (when he was around 50) to how he appears later in these films. Even at 90 he still has incredible energy.
I enjoyed both films tremendously. They are such a great tribute to his career. There's something about seeing an actor on screen through various phases of his life. Yeah pretty crazy how Kurosawa casted him as an old man when he was only about 50. It worked out though same with his role in Kagemusha.
Thanks for reviewing I got my dvd yesterday based on your review!
Its so awsome Tatsuya Nakadai's is still acting into his 90s
The entire last scene, starting from 6:24 and ending at 7:01 is perfection.
I've always thought that he is a far superior actor than Mifune. He is the REAL last samurai.
"The real last samurai" I love that!
The only drawback for Nakadai is that he was 12 years younger than Mifune and the Japanese film industry started tanking just as he was entering his prime as actor (circa late 60s early 70s). Mifune was undeniably luckier and caught more of the "wave" than Nakadai did. I think Nakadai could well be the more accomplished actor, though.
@@christophermacintyre5890 very good point
Just watched based on your recommendation. It was beautiful. I wasnt expecting to be so moved.
Yeah this movie really does need to be more well known.
He still has those eyes!! I've never seen him blink.
Keep the Nakadai coming ! 🙂
Appreciate all these late career recommendations!
I was actually thinking about going back to what made him great. Sword of Doom
@@bushidoblues9302 The Human Condition, Harakiri, Sword of Doom, & Ran (heck even Kill! or Face of Another with his crazy facial hair)... these are some of the alltimers & show bigtime range..how he can go from meek to weathered to naive to terminator-unstoppable-force is 2nd to none. I'd soak up anything featuring those, including the awesome Sword of Doom. It's a shame so few in the US are aware of him. He's one of the GOATs
Appreciate the great work, man
@Jerry McVean the human condition is one I've been meaning to watch. Very time consuming but I've heard they are great. Yes he's got quite the diverse set of roles under his belt. Definitely a GOAT contender.
@Jerry McVean I forgot he was in face of another. He looks so different in it.
@@bushidoblues9302 def recommend Human Condition when ya can. Long but one of the more intense film watching experiences, esp once you get to Part 2 & 3. I'd say it's his best performance, such an arc & so emotionally charged
Bro this is so awesome I never knew he came back????
Great review, I will definitely be getting this movie for sure. Also, what is the song that plays around 5:00?
Thanks I used this song

@@bushidoblues9302 Thank you 😀
Hey bro, can you do a video on the books that Sword of Doom is based on? I can't find any elaborate information on them.
And it would be cool, too.
It's hard to even find a picture of that book. "The Great Bodhisattva Pass" There's the Satan's sword trilogy which sticks much closer to the original novel as written by Nakazato Kaizan
Yeah, the only thing I found about that story is a bad google translated japanese-to-english synopsis I dug up from somewhere. A real holy grail, this one is.
@Kostadinov Stefan yeah I'd love to get my hands on it. It originated as a newspaper serial. Did you ever see the Satan sword trilogy?
@Kostadinov Stefan I found the book online and it's translated. Just Google great bodhisattva pass. There's a pdf I'm not sure if that's what you found too.
