It's important to say that the judge in question, Moro, was declared a national icon/hero for the Brazilian right, which could have raised demand for him to be nominated ministre of justice. There's no evidence to point to some kind of collusion there. Also, legal experts affirm that Lula's conviction will likely not be overturned if tried again

That's some selective info to bring up. i have one too: Ciro, the second most popular left-wing candidate in 2018, was projected to win against Bolsonaro. Lula refused to support him and continued to force the workers party's candidate despite their extremely weakened image.
And that made people vote for Bolsonaro without even liking him, just so Lula's party wouldn't be back. Now, 250 thousand people have died due to Bolsonaro's incompetente in handling the pandemic, all because Lula's party couldn't join forces with other leftist candidates against the alt-right threat.

@@gogobrasil7185 That's minor info in my opinion. I can understand why they would left it out of this 9 min.
While I agree that PT - and possibly Lula - were power hungry in the 2018 election, I think it's a big logic jump to blame then for what happened.
While I would love to see the Brazilian Left all united, I see it as a dream, as it is virtually everywhere else in the world.
While I agree there are a lot of things that unite the Left, there's also a lot of disagreeance, mainly when it comes to economy, how much the State should control the economy, etc...
And lastly we're talking about Politics. I also would love to see politicians really representing who elected them that's not real life. Every one of them have their own agenda and who they want to benefit to remain in power.
Politics is a cynics game, vote to whom you think need you to remain in power, not in your washed image of savior.

I blame them for their strategy, a strategy that heavily favored Bolsonaro, which eventually led to the deaths. It was so avoidable. Everybody knew they were weakened and that other candidates had a better chance at it.
I mean, even before the deaths, we knew Bolsonaro was bad. He was openly prejudiced against minorities. That should be enough for the leftist candidates to put their differences aside and fight for a better outcome.

As a brazilian who used to enjoy politics, I voted against Lula and his party in every single election since I was old enough to vote in the mid 2000s. Well, appart for 2018, were I voted for PT for the first (and hopefully only) time in my life, just to try and stop Bolsonaro. I always thought I was a center-right guy.
But two things should be mentioned here: Firstly, Lula's first government was in fact good, not gonna lie. I just thought it could be better, hence I voted against him.
Secondly, although I don't belive he is innocent of some of the charges, as someone who has a law degree I must say his judgment was kinda rigged, yes. The judge of the case became Bolsonaro's Justice Minister, ffs.
But the thing is: If I have to choose between Lula, who I think is corrupt, and Bolsonaro, who is a completely helpless imbecile and a fucking clown, who put all his sons into politics to work like a little mafia family of alt-right blind militants... Honestly, I would go with Lula all the freaking way. At least he doesn't deny the existence of the pandemic. Bolsonaro is a less-capable Trump with way too much access to social media.

As a Brazilian I'm very glad you're covering this! I watched the entire brexit process with you guys, and all I could think was that I wished someone would cover politics here the same way you guys did in the UK.
The video itself was very good and properly unbiased, despite how easy it is to just side with Lula because he's not Bolsonaro. It's a really nuanced topic due to the fact that if you criticize Lula, it'll look like you're in turn supporting Bolsonaro, which is not necessarily true.
Lula isn't a good option for Brazil. He isn't our Biden. He's very, very likely guilty of corruption. The hate for this very corruption massively boosted Bolsonaro's support. I can tell you first hand how many people I know voted Bolsonaro just so Lula's party wouldn't be back.
And worst of all, knowing that their image was extremely damaged, they insisted on running in 2018, and overshadowed another left-wing candidate that had much better chances of winning. It's one of many instances of their attempts to supress their leftist colleagues.
Personally, I'm a severe critic of both of them. Bolsonaro is the worst one, no doubts, but Lula and his party are egostitical, extremely shady opportunists. If you're a foreigner and you're against Bolsonaro's alt-right ideas, don't fall into the trap of supporting Lula for that. There are much better options for our contry that aren't as divisive nor shady and really need the support.

The people that voted for the Anti-PT man don't support him anymore, his only base is the far-right populists (which sadly is not a small group, but it's not enough to win an election), while PT might have a lot of corruption charges but it also represents the nostalgia of better days, when Brazil was as big as it has always been promised but never delivered, and it's very hard to win against nostalgia.

As a Brazilian living in the UK I’m impressed with such an accuracy when talking about politics for other countries. Everything on the video is 100% accurate on the details. I absolutely love it!
Regarding clean state law, yes I do believe every country should have it. I think is kind of common sense. Even though still not working so well in Brazil.
Regarding LULA, it has been a major topic in Brazil, he still very popular with the poorer in the country. Once I had the displeasure to eavesdrop in a bus two old ladies talking about politics during the last mandate of Lula when he supported Dilma (someone absolutely incapable of running the country). One of the ladies told the other one that “If Lula support this light pole on the street, I would vote for it”. This is the level of brainwash that happened with the poorer class in Brazil with his populist methods. Unfortunately he is a threat for future elections with a high chance of being re-elected because most people think that he has been accused innocently.

I am a brazilian too, and I live in Brazil.
As for Lula, he should indeed be behind bars, as he has engaged in a criminal scheme of bribery.
But Brazil hasnt been broken because of that. The 2015 crisis for example, was the result of a decrease in worldwide comodities exportation, not a political issue, as the extremes like to paint it.
Whether you like it or not, Lula's speech regarding today's Brazil is a lot more alligned with the reality of Brazil's people. Bolsonaro's handling of the Covid pandemic has literally killed thousands of Brazilians, as well as collapsing the Health system and delaying the economic recovery. Bolsonaro's narrative of undermining Native Brazilians and Enviromental issues, alongside his (lack of) attitude towards fighting COVID-19 has led to accusations against him and his government for crimes against Humanity, now being evaluated in the International Court in The Hague. Bolsonaro is by far the worst, most unprepared and divisive leader Brazil has ever had.

Unfortunatelly, this is how Brazil works. We have to choose between the lesser evil, for Lula is a thief and Bolsonaro a murderer (and likely a thief as well, as he is now under investigation for the "Rachadinhas" scheme too).

I'm a brazlian from the northest region. Is important know that bolsonaro suport is going down because of his actions, of course still huge but his rejection is very large now. Lula also hasn't the popularity who has before, the scandal of car wash operation still in the mind of brazilians and many one suport lula because his isn't worse than bolsonaro for then. I think the election of 2022 will be a duel of rejections, when has the biggest will win. For me, i don't want the both, but if i have to choice i'll choice lula, because i think bolsonaro too dangerous for Brazil

Como pode ser parcial (suponho que você queira dizer que perseguiu o PT)? Eduardo Cunha, que traiu o PT, tá em prisão domicilar, enquanto Lula e outros membros do PT estão soltos. A Lava-Jato serviu pra desmantelar a corrupção. Houve algumas falhas sim, infelizmente, mas isso não muda o fato do Lula ser ladrão (e existirem provas de sobra disso) e de que a operação devolveu milhões que haviam sido roubados para os cofres públicos.

Bozo and Lula are oddly similar characters, despite an expectation of decisive divergence. Both are less than reliable politicians that end up succesfully selling a message of being "humble men" that nonetheless sell the image of being friendly to the production of wealth and to nationalistic values (Bolsonaro perhaps a bit more than Lula). Both also insist on presenting themselves as the One True Way out of the country's troubles and as the destined opponent of each other.
Bozo, however, is wildly more unbalanced than Lula, and in a way that makes him that much more dangerous. Apparently he is considerably dumber than Lula as well.
Quite a few of us are sick and tired of both, but there isn't much of a hope of attaining a viable third option.
At the end of the day, both are remarkably mediocre politicians, even when gauged by the pissy-poor parameters of our politics. It just happens that they are also incredibly popular quite despite themselves.
Brazil's political system is incredibly dysfunctional. And, frankly, voters aren't that much better either.

That's a very false equivalence. Lula was a man of poor origins, Bolsonaro increased expenditure on Lobster and Condensed Milk. Lula was criticized by the elite for drinking cachaça and making BBQs, while Bolsonaro eats fancy meals but says he ate bread with butter.

As much as Bolsonaro is bad and a threat to our democracy, Lula is far away from being moderate, in many cases he stated his support to the Venezuelan and Cuban regimes which makes him a far left winger candidate. No matter who gets the presidency, in my opinion, we're still going to get a kick in the nuts by our politicians who where supposed to help the people
