  • I got my hands on an early copy of System Shock by Nightdive Studios, the 2023 remake of the original game from 1994. What's my (spoilerfree) review and impressions? Is it good? Let's talk.

    I really love the way this game looks. It’s distinct and pays homage to the pixelated look of the original. I think it’s brilliant. The Unity version looks more like Prey, which we already have. I can’t wait to jump into this. I played System Shock 2 back in the day but never the original. Also: a small team released an Unreal game in 2023 without performance issues! Go Nightdive :)

    • @flushfire
      @flushfire Год назад +2

      Agreed. Anyone who says the Unity version looks closer to the original is either high or drunk. It's actually amazing how faithful the remake is. Not something one normally sees in current year. Most of the time current devs think they can do better. This genuinely looks like work done with respect.

    • @mrnelsonius5631
      @mrnelsonius5631 Год назад

      @@flushfire how I feel. The Unity version was more “modern spooky space station”. It looked great…. But didn’t have much of its own identity. Could’ve been a lot of games. This reminds me of the System Shock era way more. I’m hoping this does well. I’d love to see an original spin off from devs that understand what makes System Shock great. Immersive sims need love (and sales….) right now. Just look what’s been done to Arkane :(

    •  Год назад

      That "homage to the pixelated look" is one of the points against it. Don't want that, want modern graphics. Because the "pixelated look" is not something you should pay homage to, since IT WAS NOT A CREATIVE DECISION! The graphics back then were that "bad". I really don't get all the "retro look" bullshit.

    • @mrnelsonius5631
      @mrnelsonius5631 Год назад

      @ respectfully disagree. System Shock is an OLD game, many of its systems are of its time. If they took out all those systems it wouldn’t be SS1 anymore. It’d be SS3 or something. The *slightly* throw back look communicates that this is built on an old game, while still having modern lighting and better UI/controls. The entire affair is a “split the difference” approach rather than a complete reimagining. I think what Nightdive did is the smartest move they could’ve made. They were never gonna make everyone happy, gamers like different things. I think where they landed is as close to a sweet spot between “pleasing the purists” and “attracting a new audience who never played SS1 because of how dated it is” as anyone could’ve got. My 2 cents. If you want “full modern System Shock” go play Prey. Dishonored 2 and Mankind Divided are also in a similar wheelhouse and are extremely pretty on PC. If SS Remake sells well we may eventually get a System Shock 3 🙏

    I have to comment on the art direction. Hat's off to Nightdive that they managed to do the impossible. Take SShock's art and make it modern, but still keeping the vibe so beautifully. I'm sure not many gives them enough credit for this, but show me another game looking like this? It's a work of art I think, and immediately recognizable. Get ready for copycats if this one sells well. And I surely think it should!

    • @flushfire
      @flushfire Год назад +2

      Well said. Another review I watched did a scene for scene comparison and I actually found it surprising - most modern devs would find something to "improve" instead of staying faithful to the original.

    I like the review but I slightly feel like you're not having played the original is showing. To my eye, the brighter aesthetics and slight cartoonist for lack of a better word enemies look way closer to the bright graphics and enemy sprites of the original. System Shock 1 was not the horror game it's younger sibling was. Similarly, inventory management was not a big issue in the original, you didn't have this System Shock 2 / prey / most other imsim like grid layout, things just went into a list at the bottom of your screen and that list was allowed to get pretty big. The changes to the inventory seem to me (as someone who pre-ordered but has yet to play the remake bc I'm away from my PC this week) to be some of the largest ways in which the remake diverges from the original, it feels faithful to the series and it's legacy, yes, but to the original game specifically?
