I find it hilarious how the only Greek philosopher who made it to the good place was Hypatia because the male philosophers defended slavery.

Doesn’t really make sense though does it? As far as I know, everyone in the ancient world agreed that slavery was justified.
cat lover People defend buying stuff from people working a slave wage overseas these days. When that’s how society is built slavery just seems like it is a necessity to function. Especially becuase most philosophers were upper class.
for most of human history slavery has been a socially acceptable practice, at most seen as a necessary evil. Ancient people’s felt the same way about it as modern people do about third world sweatshops making our clothes. I’m sure many people over the centuries wanted to end the practice but there was no viable alternative, until the industrial revolution came along and let one man do the work of ten.

@@lynnly2406 I think reincarnation is fine. I get to live new lives and form new memories. Maybe I get to have some vague sense of my previous lives, or maybe I start completely fresh. Either way is fine. I certainly don't think I'd want to live forever, even if it is in paradise. Having the choice to simply stop existing though, that's much better.

Oh hell yes. The continuity and Easter eggs and attention to detail in this show is awe inspiring. I'm so sad the show is ending, but they really have redefined television and sitcoms for me. I've been going back and rewatching earlier series, once you know the twists it's amazing how much forshadowing was done that I missed at the time.

this episode is the physical embodiment of the chills i get if i ever think about being immortal or just a neverending perfect afterlife
Glad to know the idea of an eternal existence (one that is perfect and will eventually become boring) is something other people freak out over.
When I was around 6 years old I heard and understood for the first time the idea of an eternal, perfect afterlife, as told by my Christian mother. Sinking into the imagination of me just existing on without an end, even in paradise, I experienced my first severe panic attack, crying for hours after. I get the same horror chills to this day and had some ptsd while watching this episode.
The idea of unending bliss is terrifying. Enjoyment can be found without adversity or objective; but only for a time. The Greek idea of the river Lethe handled those problems as a way to forget and start over. But outside of that I was never introduced to a faith/belief that addressed the issue. And it caused me to question and doubt my humanity. Because I was afraid of what everyone else said was supposed to be a perfect paradise.
Fortunately, we have no actual idea of what the afterlife actually looks like. And although I believe that Heaven is real, it is certainly not like this. In order to live for eternity in paradise, we must change in order to live there otherwise it will be exactly like this.
@@gabi4205 That happened to me around the same age too but it was nightime and I was already in bed trying to sleep. The ideas hunted me for days but then I kind of forgot about them, maybe I just got distracted with everyday life. Many years have passed, I'm an adult now and for some reason lately I find myself thinking about death a lot (always at night) and having panic attacks like yourself. I'm scare of dying but also scare of the infinite. The fact the we, as humans, have the capacity to reflect on these concepts but still can't comprehend them, its just a very weird state of conscience to find ourselfs in.
I feel like I'm going to need 4 years of therapy to cope with the finale next week

I really hope no one has commented on how the intro music to each episode sounds exactly like what they use in the sims and that is awesome. If they got inspiration from the sims thats even better because the nature of the sims is a great analogy (I think) to The Good Place.

worried about the last episode since this ep ended pretty satisfyingly - the way that this episode's main problem was solved seems like it would be "The Solution" to the finish the series and that it would've come about in the finale - makes me wonder how exactly everything will/won't go wrong in the finale. regardless of the specifics i hope it's an incredible final episode to an incredible show.

@@mrcritical6751 that's what I thought too, or at least that Eleanor and Chidi would go through together. The title of the last ep is "whenever you're ready". I have a hunch that they'll spend thousands of years together in the good place until they decide that's enough existing and leave together one last time.
I feel like the last episode might be our mains going through the last door. And my want, which I feel wont happen, would be Michael being reincarnated into a human

It was such a delight seeing Lisa Kudrow on the show, let alone this episode!
I was acting like Chidi during this entire scene, jumping up and down, giddy with excitement, squealing, "OMG, Phoebe!"
This episode felt less about the characters in general than about the audience as the main character. It felt personal and more meaningful to the journey of audience throughout the series and how the end is what gives the journey meaning....man! This episode hit me right in the feels...
Missed opportunity for Michael to say “You look like Phoebe from Friends”
Two things I love about this. Eleanor was right! Phoebe really did get into the Good Place! Also I wanna say I appreciate hearing her pronounce Gangam Style the proper way.

I called this all the way back in season 1, i said how can any human mind cope with eternity? Without challenge, without growth and loss even eternal bliss would become unbearable as you broke down and became a passionless zombie. Ten million years of the same stuff over and over, no wonder these people are desperately consuming all the latest stuff from Earth.
My solution was to install a reset-button, like Janet has. You could live in complete bliss and contentment for as long as you liked then go and record a message for yourself, before pushing the button and have your memory reset back to the first instant you stepped into the good place. You could do it all over again and the other people would get to meet you for the first time once more, bringing them something fresh.
I, Literally, called this entire episode.
I said that they would arrive in heaven, and find out it was boring, and that they were going to find out the only thing left was death.
The only thing I Didn't think of, was giving the humans an Option for death. That was a Perfect touch.

I haven't watched it and now I'm put off, not because it's a spoiler but because you made it sound lame.
I felt that way when the Good Place committee was over the top super happy and supportive but kinda dense and boringly bureaucratic. I kept thinking at the time that If that's heaven and it's eternally bland and tied up with red tape I don't want to be stuck with that for eternity.
@@krathoon2338 this clip was a spoiler too, they release a clip in advance every single week. If you want to avoid spoilers, why are watching the spoiler clip and reading the comments? Maybe stop watching the RUclips channel altogether if you want to watch the episode fresh and spoiler free? (This ep hasn't been released in my country yet, I come here deliberately to see spoiler clips to get me psyched for the episode)

The series has got to end with them going through the doors, it’s sad but where the series will logically end
Mr Critical the cast and writers all said the ending will be satisfying so I hope they won’t just walk through the doors and “die”. I keep waiting for another big twist

That probably isn't an option, it looks like they can't really control what happens in life (outside of obvious things like going down there and physically interacting with people), only the afterlife.
@Kairi Ho Being part of the universe is not worse than being an animal. In fact it's arguably better as you won't be mistreated. It's also consistent with the law of entropy and makes the reassuring, affirming statement that death and dissolution are natural parts of life, not bad things.
Technically they did kind of reincarnate. You see it when you forward to michael on earth, but what happens is that everybody who walks through the door, they dissolve into their pure goodness and become one with the universe, and the universe takes that energy and it becomes the voice at the back of your head telling you to do the right thing. Eleanors energy made that guy return machaels post to him, thus becoming better. Its also like how eleanor said that after every reboot she had a voice in her head telling her the right thing to do. Once you walk through that door, you become another voice and the world becomes better.
if you can reincarnate does that mean everyone eventually ends up in the bad place?
think about it, you end up in the good place and after years amd years u decide to move on. When you move on, you reincarnate and might end up in the good place. This might happen several times over many lives that u have but eventually ull end up in the bad place because once youre there you dont have the option
Hmm reincarnare as an option for the good place? No thank you. How would that be a good solution? Life on earth mostly is pain and stuggle, none of them woudl find it a0pealing just to go to life lesson and stuggle over and over again.

The next episode is called "Whenever You're Ready", this episode had the 4 humans and Micheal come up with a new type of door that will end your time in the Universe when you walk through it, to give the afterlife meaning and prevent people there from becoming mushy-brained happiness zombies, Patty ends off with Chidi and Eleanor spending cherished time together, my theory is that the last scene will show Eleanor and Chidi holding hands and walking through that door, to finally be at peace. Which is why the episode is titled "Whenever You're Ready". (But I will literally cry if that happens)

Hypatia was respected by both Christians and pagans, and had many Christian students. A Christian brotherhood, the parabolani, may have been the mob that killed her, but it is widely suspected that Cyril ordered them to do it after Cyril confiscated the properties of Jews that were involved in a previous massacre, which greatly angered many.
WAIT A MINUTE! throughout the series Michael has been going on about friends and watched it all, there for he knows what Phoebe looked like and didn't realize something about how hypatia and Phoebe ARE LITERALLY THE SAME PERSON
Also I can't help but remember how she died by an angry Christian mob bc they thought she was a witch, I just can't help but notice that wasn't brung up. I would think after a thousand years she would still be traumatized
With everyone going to the bad place and even the good place being badly run, it makes you wonder who put all these people in charge? The problems of the afterlife all seem rooted in a lack of understanding of humanity.

It mades me sad because I'm like Patty. I was watching this and the first thing that stood out was her hair at the side sticking out. It's like an anomaly. Except for me, I liked in my own world and had been out of work for a while so because you're not mentally agile you start to become what she said - this 'glassy-eyed blob'. Also, the reality that ultimately, the result of finding the Actual Good Place only to realise that there must be an end to this seemingly good realm that they all previously strived to go into was very fitting.
i like to think everything she listens to is translated to her ancient language(idk what she spoke) thats why it can be a little weird to hear the word 'cheesecake' when eleanor asks

One of my very few regrets with the show, that they couldn't explore the Fixing the Good Place arc. It was still very cool.

I kept expecting her to start singing Smelly Cat.
I always pictured the good place as being the inverse of michaels bad place. They made it, with no process to get kicked out and could have all their desires fulfilled. With an eternity, I expected them to become hedonists or just insensitive jerks since penalties and punishments would no longer exist. Like when Janet brought Eleanor a load of drugs, just imagine if that’s what happened to the food place of the people their had an infinite amOunt of time to change, and not necessarily for the better
Your theory would be imposibile. These people ended în The good palce because of their incredible great nature. Their personality is so impecabile that would not allow the down falls off similairty with bad place. Otherwise they wouldn't be în The good place at all. The creator of the show amde that distoncioj very clear. Having drugs all of a suddne în The good place? You are talking about people with Saint like personalities. Their personality wouldn't turn 180 and become demonic just cuz they are bored, lol, what is wrong with your thinking? I don't see how your theory would make any sense... Is rather more fitting they become apatic rathar than turn crazy.
@@marishkaspirit because a human lifespan is a limited snapshot compared to an infinite afterlife. My reasoning was that the amazing people slowly change over time after they’d already made it into the good place. Can you say you’d be the same person after 300 or 500 years?
