I know many people view live service as the boogeyman in modern gaming, but marvel rivals showed that it does indeed have a place. I think SSKTJL would have been a great contender for DC’s long-running live service title. It’s just a shame that people didn’t can’t seem to understand that single player games would have still been made with or without its success.
I’m completely with you. It’s not that WB/ DC shouldn’t want a live service it’s that rocksteady an acclaimed single player studio shouldn’t have been tasked with it. Pair the right IP with the right studio. I hope we do get a live service dc game in the future
I think Marvel Rivals had a perfect marketing cycle. They announced it in early 2024 with actual gameplay first and people saw the overwatch comparisons seeing a little potential but most people (including myself) widely forgot about it. Then they started revealing characters and maps, then had their Alpha and Beta tests which people really enjoyed. That was when the game got my attention. And then there were some stellar cinematic trailers which got everyone's attention especially revealed at D23. And lastly, they started doing daily reveals for skins and characters. By that time, everyone was watching to try and see who would be revealed which got the game a lot of hype. By the time it released, people were talking about how it was better than Overwatch and a Marvel fan's dream come true.
It wouldn't be as huge if it was announced a year or two ago. The fact that it just popped up on the scene is what made it popular
I wouldn’t discount the multiplayer side of it too, similar to Helldivers, MP games have a massive chance to blow up. But I’m with you, it’s the marketing cycle id prefer than over 3 years with drip-fed trailers.
Hopefully we see more successes like Rivals
I was so gutted about suicide squad... I really wanted it to succeed.
Same man , that month up to launch felt really promising too
@MattEffectGames it did, I remember defending the game against the previews. I still, to this day, believe the negative press played a part.
Didn’t Gunn say EVERYTHING DC would be connected including games?
Nah, he said he wants some games to be DCU but not everything will be
