    Thank you for being the first reviewer I've seen who got the point about why the Uglies aren't Ugly. It seems like an obvious nuance that people are missing, but then again, as you pointed out, the movie isn't good at engaging with any sort of depth.
    I did read the books back in the day, and I remember Scott Westerfeld having a defter hand with the themes and plot points (as well as being WAY ahead of the curve on a lot of tech and social media issues in relation to social and self perception). That said, it has been a long time and I may be remembering the overall series as better than it was. But if that's the case, the ground was even more wide open for the adaptation to take the base premise and really dig into all the elements that are so prescient to the modern world. And there's no arguing that they did not do that on any level. The movie has the depth of a piece of tissue paper, and some shocking lack of self awareness. Having Laverne Cox play the evil dictator forcing surgeries on kids? Jesus.
    I would love to know why she decided to accept the part.

    Iiiinteresting. I think it would have worked better if they had made the visual difference between uglies and pretties more extreme, but by having the uglies presented as normal people, and the pretties some kind of CGI plastic doll barbie/ken look that everyone has been brainwashed into thinking is the gold standard.

    This book series was definitely written for a young audience (hence Uglyville and New Pretty Town), but it had me in a CHOKEHOLD in middle school. The concept really stuck with me throughout the years. That being said, this isn’t the first time Ive been highly disappointed by a movie version of a book I like. Not only are they trying to make something written for a really young audience into something for people of all ages, but they also rushed, left out, and changed SO MUCH in the story. It just felt very hollow.
    But, fun fact, Uglies was inspired by a short story called Liking What You See by Ted Chiang. In this, people don’t get “pretty” surgery at 16, but instead have the option to turn off the part of their brain that recognizes attractiveness. The story is a series of interviews debating the pros/cons of this and if it should be a requirement that every student in a specific university has this procedure. I HIGHLY suggest the quick read as it really delves into attractiveness, advertisement, media influence, etc. Def made me think a bit.

    I feel like having the big problem being that “the pretty surgery makes you dumb” is a mistake. A good dystopia is a criticism of current society. Hunger Games criticizes how we treat the poor, using them for labor and entertainment. Yes it’s a much more dramatic version of what we have in real life, but in real life people do sacrifice their health and safety just to survive in the society we’ve set up. Farenheight 451 criticizes how we hide knowledge that makes us uncomfortable rather than face it. 1984 criticizes the very real ways governments control people, taking inspiration from actual fascists he saw during the war. All of these are exaggerated fictions, yes, but at their heart, the flaws in these dystopias are flaws present in the real world.
    But the idea that “getting pretty” makes you dumber isn’t really a good criticism of current society (in my opinion). Getting plastic surgery doesn’t make you dumber. You could argue that pretty people tend to be vapid, which I think is a pretty surface level stereotype, but also misses the real problem with vanity. Pretty people who are shallow and vain and vapid CHOOSE to remain ignorant. Being pretty doesn’t make you dumb, some pretty people choose to use their good looks to avoid having to be deeper or more hardworking. Additionally, a lot of pretty people are incredibly smart. Many instagram models flying out to get dangerous surgeries are doing so as a calculated business move. Many pretty people use their looks as a tool.
    The pretty people in uglies are “good people who had a surgery with unknown consequences”. But I think it’s a way better criticism if the same people who were ugly yesterday CHOOSE to become jerks once they’re pretty. What if the main character becomes convinced the pretty surgery makes you dumb, only for the reveal to be that no, her ex-friend just became a shallow jerk as soon as it was in his control to do so? Or hell, what if before the surgery, you’re told about the side effect- and it’s just that everyone in this dystopia would rather be pretty and dumb than smart and ugly? It would be a fairly chilling reveal to find out all of these people made the same choice.
    I don’t know, it just feels like a very weak dystopia if the big problem is that your pretty surgery makes people dumb. A good dystopia should be a scathing criticism, and “pretty people are dumb” is just the exact same repetition of the “dumb blonde jokes” I’ve heard since third grade. And you can’t make a good, dramatic dystopia out of that.

      Umm its given in the movie that brain lesions were purposely introduced in the person's brain during their pretty transformation to dumb them down. That's why David's parents are trying to find a cure to the brain lesions. Peris didn't simply become a jerk after being transformed, he was numbed to the point he didn't care abt Tally anymore until he went back to that uglyville to meet Tally (under Dr. Cable's orders) once again, that's when he started feeling something again in her presence. Everyone is conditioned to believe that turning pretty will lead to happiness and peace but its the lesions that reduces your thinking power.

      I think there is a Korean movie like that. The main character has a nice voice but she is considered unattractive. Someone else is pretty gets the spotlight for the MC’s talent. Then she gets surgery to make her pretty which warps her personality.

      @@kelly8752 200 Pounds beauty?

    • @neonradius
      @neonradius Месяц назад

      @@kelly8752to be honest there’s a lot of shows or movies where an unattractive person becomes attractive and becomes a bad person, it’s a pretty common trope. I don’t think it’s inherently bad writing, and I think it’s really realistic and can be a good story or a part of a good story. But I also think the fact that it’s so common means that it’s hard to make a good dystopia about it that doesn’t feel overdone. I think Uglies was kind of doomed from the beginning, because it feels very hard to make a good statement about how beauty impacts society that hasn’t been done literally thousands of times. “Trying to obtain beauty above all else is bad” is one of the oldest morals of all of literature.
      Of course, something being done to death doesn’t make it bad. I just think that if something is a common moral, you need to make up for it with something else to entertain. But dystopias are all about the moral, so it’s already a lot harder to make a good dystopia out of such an overdone idea. But Uglies doesn’t give us any unique additions, it doesn’t go any deeper than “being pretty isn’t everything”, one of the most basic after school special morals, and it doesn’t have anything else like good acting or world design or effects of a great plot that would make up for lackluster thematics.

      Perhaps the pretty thing is just a facade as so much political correctness and fear of cancellation doesn't allowed people to question things.
      If you put this as Trans ideology, perhaps makes more sense. How young people are made to feel like is something wrong with who their are. The irreversible damage cause buy doing the change. So pretty city would be just an illusion ( created like when she puts the pig mask) as even on a dystopia hard labor still to exist. Who is cleaning ... where food comes from ?? The dystopia in the " Giver " or hunger games makes more sense.

    The issue with the casting is Hollywood displaying it's shallowness by refusing to consider hiring any actors who don't meet conventional beauty standards. The premise of the story had protentional to confront the shallow ideals of valuing person's worth by their appearance. The problem isn't people looking in the mirror and thinking "I'm not the most beautiful person in the world", most of us could have been born more attractive by our own personal preferences. The problem is people and society placing too much importance on beauty and what people look like. Just my opinion, feel free to agree or disagree.

    My mama always said "Beauty is as beauty does." I didn't understand what she meant at the time. When I realized what she meant at a later age, I took it to heart. There are many, many outward pretty people that are really ugly and have an ugly heart. And there are many, many people that aren't outwardly beautiful, but they are more "beautiful" than those with an ugly heart. I know this really doesn't have anything to do with the movie, but maybe it does in a way. All those people who became outwardly beautiful still had the same heart they did before the surgery, whether that be ugly or beautiful. It changed nothing about their "beauty" or lack thereof.

    Shay is how ‘strong female lead’ should be done and she is giving more main character vibes than the actual main character. Gotta give it to the movie for the refreshing take that the girl boss we are supposed to follow is on the ‘bad side’ belief-wise nearly all the run time… but then she is good at everything she tries first time, so never mind..

    I kind of liked the movie and the concept but you are absolutely right about the pacing and exploring characters. I felt like the beginning was "dragging" a bit and if some things would have been established earlier, they could have spend more time on that. Plus the ending kind of showed that and it was just like "Yeah, everyone is here and action!"
    However, I would like to watch a sequel and more of it because the story got me interested and hooked (but I think the books are better and maybe the movie got me into reading them. I love dystopian YA and it sounds very interesting).
    At first I also thought why choose these actors to play ugly characters but it actually makes sense if there were only made to believe they were ugly so they would get the surgery (actually smart so you don't have to force them because they would automatically want to take it and get brainwashed and controlled).
    On a side note I would totally take Tally's new apartment (I wish the characters had different names. That might have been one of the worst part of this. Like they choose the first names that showed up on a baby names website :D).
    But I'm totally here if they are going to bring back the hype about these kind of movies.

But I think it has gone too far.

    I read the first two books and part of the last one as a kid. What made me quit was ‘the cutters’ a group of pretties and specials that get clarity and temporarily reverse the effects of the brain damage by doing… exactly what you think. As a kid, I thought they would confront that idea more, and maybe they did in the last book. As an adult, I’m horrified that I and other people my age, were reading that shit. The uglies series has a lot of good ideas, but it also has a lot of bad ones.

    • @nexttimeon5684
      @nexttimeon5684 Месяц назад

      One good thing about the books is how they address racism. The society just doesn’t deal with it. It’s implied that once you’re pretty, everyone becomes one skin tone. Tally is first described as being darker than the average pretty. The society gets rid of racism by getting rid of race, an extreme of ‘I don’t see color.’ And unlike the cutters, this is something actually looked into in the second book.
      So in the movie, it’s even more disappointing that the pretties don’t look more uniform. They’re taking out a big chunk of the evil from the bad guys.

Would have been much better as a tv show with like 8 episodes so that Netflix would have time to go deeper into what the lessons and plot is all about and how it connects to current society. Also the way lines were delivered was really poor sadly maybe they should have either changed up the script or gotten different actors. Just felt very surface level sadly
