    There will never be another Barry Humphries...can you imagine Sir Les at the Pearly Gates telling St.Peter the gag with Snouser with hairy in his ears or the gag on the Mike Willsee program asking what Joan Collins puts behind her ears to attract the men folk.

    I was a junior at SAS-10 back then and Jay Walton was totally blind-sided by SLP's appearance as she was expecting DEE. I'm pretty confident it was BH's intention to put her in her place and as the show was live, all JW could do was squirm. JW was a notorious snob and not universally liked throughout the studio. Her show was quickly taken over by Margaret Glazebrook. [edit] looking at it now, it seems the juiciest bits have been edited out like when SLP invited JW to "get up and show us your vertical smile!" 😮

    This was momentarily on The Australian web site today with a story of what happened which was hilarious. Station mortified with execs running around in panic thinking the govt would shut the station down. Eventually they managed to shut the live show down with a blank screen. Barry took calls from a red hot switchboard sympathetic to irate housewives.nSomehow the Oz removed the story soon after going up.

    Britain should have knighted Barry Humphries and Australia should put up a statue to him or if the government is stiff on the dollar, a stamp would do.

      Barry was made a Commander of The British Empire, the next highest award within the Order of The British Empire. I don’t think he wished to become ‘Sir Barry’ re his characters being ‘Dame’ & ‘Sir’

    If only someone would post the full version of this legendary piece of Adelaide television. Humphries pushed Sir Les to the very limit, no doubt because the piss-elegant Jaye Walton was the ultimate unwitting foil, as well as totally and utterly out of her depth. Ultimately station executives pulled the plug and the screen went black until they could go to ads or station promos.

    • @micktre7608
      @micktre7608 Год назад +1

      This show according to SAS10 wasn't recorded on that fateful, now legendary show.. ACMA (?) wanted to take away their TV licence over this because the barrage of complaints and the station vehemently denied it's existence. I worked on this show (AKA a crutch of elephants) for many years and this is the first evidence I've seen that it was actually recorded. It was single camera show punched to air via master control...no filters

    • @ozvoyager
      @ozvoyager Год назад +1

      @@micktre7608 Yes, the execs were in full-panic mode, so they lied about there being no recording when tapes were called for. But there was always a tape and at least a few copies, which became the ultimate contraband. I've seen the full tape and it's priceless. But it would have confirmed that 10 should have pulled the plug a lot earlier than they did.
