got to see him perform live in a very small bar in E. Lansing Michigan next to the Michigan State University Campus right around 1970 or 71. Got within a few feet of him since the "stage" was tiny. I'll never forget his performance. As I recall he did 3 "sets". In each set he wore a different colored "suede suit". Purple (like in this video) Green and Yellow. I was with my sister who was a student at the time at MSU. What a Genre of Music up in the North Midwest!!
Visiting Nashville the first time in '73 dropped into a bar late one night, only a few customers, one of whom was Doug Kershaw sitting alone at a table over a drink.... so happened he recorded a song , Rock & Roll I Gave You The Best Years of My Life by Kevin Johnson through Tree Music, Nashville, Kevin on a label I was forming, this to be his first release... I ambled over explained my connection, a big smile and an invination to join him taken and an enjoyable hour or so following on shared music favourites many of whom were his buddies, Waylon, Willies, Cash, Leon Russell... one of the friendliest people I've had the fortune to meet over time, Jerry Lee Lewis, Kinky Friedman included...

I've been blessed to call this man my friend of over thirty five years. Took some younger females to see him when he was in Texas few years back cause they had no idea what fiddle music was. After the show I introduced them to him and they were amazed at how friendly and down to earth such a star could be. He was, is, and will always be a very special person in my life that has taught me so much. May his music live on for years to come. Hope to see you again soon.
Discovered his music recently when I found Mama Kershaw's Boy on vinyl record at a thrift store here in Michigan! The music was amazing and I came here to RUclips to hear the rest. Tell him his music lives on with the younger generations!
Doug shared Hank Jr. and my bus in Baton Rouge ,LA many years back. Hank Jr was there, Willie, Merle Kilgore, David Allen, and others..all day outdoor.
Hey from Baton Rouge. Love everything Louisiana style music. It's so much fun. First time hearing this..see him and Gov Edwards in a limo in the French Quarter he is singing "Don't mess with my Toot Toot." And Clarence Carter's Strokin just makes me laugh out loud. Louisiana, no where else like it. Louisiana music, the roots. I worked for the Rolling Stone. All worldwide artists agree as they shared with me.

I have been blessed to be able to see Doug perform many times in Las Vegas. I used to sneak my daughter - who played violin - in to see him and we had to stand in the doorway because they wouldnt let her in to the bar area. I have been a fan of his since 1964. He is just Awesome.
Good Lord but I love to hear Doug Kershaw. Takes me down to Cajun Louisiana immediately. First saw him in Las Vegas and I was hooked. Long live Doug and his music.
I was so blessed to meet Doug Kershaw in a Long's Drug Store in Greeley CO... and he was so sweet. I told him I loved his music... and it was just a very special memory!
@@arnoldblashak171 I can't remember what TV show it was but it was probably 1970 when I saw him. Maybe it was the Johnny Cash show as mentioned above but I do remember him kicking his heels up dancing. Quite entertaining.
amazing, I knew a "brother" named SCOPE who worked at tire king in Fayetteville,NC, he was mesmerized by Doug opening for some rock bands at Cumberland county arena, said Doug had as much soul as James Brown

HIS "Play Fiddle Play" takes me to a higher level ! He oozes charm and musicality.
Pure Gold!!!!
It's hard to find a country singer who hasn't covered this song. It's one of the most respected and loved songs in that community, and rightfully so.
Doug is the best though.

Doug Kershaw was the best , saw him live a few times in Shreveport
He wrote this song about his dad. So sad his father committed suicide when Doug was a boy. So talented!

More than 50 years ago. Wow. I like the slower, clearer singing, too. He's just magic.

It don't get any better.

Wow, rufneckin in the gulf, had a gf from Jennings, pure cooney
The kids sitting in front seem unenthused while a Cajun legend plays an old favorite. Oh well😊
Top Gator 🐊 Man.
If you're gonna play in Texas, you've got to have a fiddle in the band
I use to see his brother PeeWee, perform at dance halls around southeast Texas back in the 60’s and 70’s.
That Lead Guitar is Hot but not for "Louisiana Man"
Interesting note: Kershaw has a BS in Math from McNeese State University.
Even so , I still think he's a great guy
