Ares (War God) traps Kratos to slaughter his own family in a temple located in a village whose inhabitants are followers of Athens. Upon realizing that he had slaughtered his beloved wife and daughter, he immediately condemned Ares's cunning, and declared that he stopped being a servant of the god of war. Kratos left his family's remains in the temple of the Athenian devotee as well as where he slaughtered the family unintentionally. In front of the burning temple, Kratos was punished for the brutal action. His whole body was covered in the ashes of his burning family, and made the skin of white Kratos as pale as a full moon. It was then that he was known as the Ghost of Sparta.

Fun fact: The entire game is made in one long continuous shot! No cuts at all. This was a nightmarish challenge for the developers, but a big accomplishment. It’s never been done before.

Yeah, i've watched 3 hours youtube cinematic of the whole past games, and yes i dabbled little bit of the actual game, but this is warm compare to his past life.

Kratos is actually being extremely gentle lmaooo
He stares at his arm in the beginning because thats where he used to have the chains of his previous blades burned into his skin. It also simbolized his chackles to the greek gods he served and eventually killed.
If my ears don't deceive me you can even hear the music from the older games in that moment. And the way he's hiding wrapping them back up from Atreus... It's pretty amazing how they managed to conceive so much of his past in those few seconds.
It’s also that the rage that drove him during those times, were based on losing his wife and daughter. Now he just lost his new wife and is determined to not lose his son.
I always believed that his wife is reaching out to him by pulling on his bandages.
Those few seconds of solitude were very powerful in my opinion. Trying to show how much he's been through yet strives to remain calm, brilliant acting, cinematography and soundtrack behind it those few moments.

7:52 this shot is perfect coz it shows what Kratos is to Atreus at this point in time, a stranger with a dark silhouette, a hulking figure that we can't discern any detail from,it even perfectly describes his mentality as a warrior given the "sinister " look

Yayy God of War!!! Oh and FYI if you're wondering why Kratos has a tattoo it's because he's honoring his dead brother who had a unique birth mark all over his upper torso. He was kidnapped when he was a kid by Ares and Athena. And blames himself for not saving him.

In GoW2, Zeus tricks Kratos into pouring his godly powers into the sword and then uses it to kill the weakened Kratos.
After getting his revenge at the end of GoW3, Kratos uses the sword on himself, to release back into humanity the power of hope he'd taken to kill the gods, and to end the guilt and torment he'd been carrying since unknowingly killing his family in a blind rage.

I've been playing all the previous God Of War games over the last year on PSNow hyping and anticipating for this, and I was not disappointed one damn bit. Anyone that is a fan of this franchise understands how powerful this beginning scene is.

His reaction to those wraps coming undone is something that almost certainly will be explained in the game. Longtime fans will know why he reacted like that, but it'll be cool to see how someone new to the franchise reacts when it's revealed. So hopefully no one spoils it for you and just lets the game explain it when it comes time.

It's interesting how they made the story in this game, it changes what your perspective depending on your past experience with the series. If you played before you are Kratos, knowing what the past is and trying to move on. If you had no exposure to the series before then you are Atreus, wondering what father is keeping from you as he drip feeds you his past through the story. It's brilliant story telling.
I guess to each it’s own , to me it feels like a slap in the face when they hit a LEGENDARY ICONIC scene and they have no idea what the fuck is going on , don’t mind it when they skip the first games but at least watch a video on the backstory and lore .

That's not true, the Romans didn't copied the Greek gods and renamed them, their gods were already existing and were already similar (but also different) to Greek gods, they just got influenced by different civilization during different times, first by the Etruscans and the Greeks but also by other Italic and Celtic populations.
Mars for example during early Roman times had no equivalent in the Greek mythology and he was just the god of males' fertility.

Kratos isn't a real god. It's a fictional character made by Sony. *Ares* is the real Greek God of War.

Kratos is actually the god of power in greek mythologie. He is the son of Pallas and Styx. He and his sister Bia (goddess of violence) bounded Prometheus for stealing the fire.

Idunn was the goddess who grew magical apples for the gods, which gave them their youth and immortality. She is mainly featured in in the Den Eldre Edda-collection, in the story where she is kidnapped by the eagle-jotun Tjatse(Giants came in all shapes and sizes, including dragons, wolves and birds) who wanted the apples for himself. And today, Idunn is the name of a ketchup-brand here in Norway xD
I love this game. Little tip since you're used to Bloodborne controls, you can swap the controls in the Gameplay Options menu so you dodge with O and interact with X, made things a little easier for me. Annnnd a bit of a nit-pick, but A-tray-us. Great job though, you're gonna lve this game!

I can't help but chuckle at RPG mechanics in action adventure games sometimes (not in a malicious way)... Kratos has been through literal hell/hades, defeated several gods and monsters, experienced several wars and lived a very, very long time... but at the beginning of this game he doesn't have enough experience to upgrade his skills ;P

So glad you're playing this marz! It's a great game so far. 1 quick tip. You can parry with the shield. Just time it correctly like in bloodborne. You can parry the big enemies as well :)
Yay! Loving this game so far. Quite challenging boss fights, but I like it. We delve into another fatherly adventure with Papa Kratos, except that this papa is a really aggressive, cold beast! Lol
I sort of think Atreus' comment of no longer being "sick" can be taken in two ways...he's either probably talking about being ill and weak when he was younger, or maybe even by what we see in context when he sort of rages out on the giant troll, it's a mental state of "sick". Hard to tell though so early in game, I think we still need a little more backstory.

Kratos was always there but he went on long hunting trips or trips for seclusion. He is afraid of getting too close to his family so he only does the minimum of providing. He actually feels he doesn't deserve his family or happiness and is afraid he will ruin them as he thinks he is cursed.

Everything has been done before. Every story you could come up with has elements that have been done. The successful artist knows how to pull from sources correctly and meld them all together. No such thing as stealing, simply new iterations of the same old stories.

All themes HAVE been done. This game's about a Parent/Child relationship which is why people compare it to The Last of Us. Stories like this are ten thousand years old. There is nothing new under the sun, no way to be completely different from everything without using parts of something else. So fun fact, those bandage straps on his forearms to cover the scaring of the Blades of Chaos from the original 3 God of war Games, they were the chain blades he used in the game and the chains were burned into his forearms. That's why he was all silent-emotional and broody when looking at the bandages and wrapping them back up. It reminded him of his past, which is really dark.

Hey Mark you can parry a lot of attacks too like Bloodbourne. Attacks you can’t parry will glow, parried enemies will allow you to land a couple of hits before dodging away
Oh my goodness - Yessssssss! I just got this game today so we can play it at the same time, Marz! It’s just a beautiful game and I’m loving the soundtrack.
The relationship between father and son is certainly interesting but fitting for everything that Kratos has gone through. I played the first two games so I had to watch a video too to catch up with the ones I missed. Kratos certainly has changed since I last met him...but he’s still kinda hot. 😂
