Was thinking as I was watching this video about how we do love to see everything they do, and we do wish Laura went around with a go-pro just strapped to her forehead 😂 but... that it would be selfish of us to expect the camera to be rolling all of the time. I don't want Laura and Aaron to feel "I should be filming this" during times when they really should be just living in the moment and loving life! That would become a reality show and everyone needs their down time and their private time with family. Filming and posting content is their job and while they love it, everyone needs to be able to "go home" at the end of a long day at work and spend time with their family without the public watching. So far it seems like they are striking a good healthy balance and that is awesome! Trying not to be greedy and thankful for everything that they do post for us to enjoy! 💗

Maybe you aren't aware of the fact that they make their living from the videos they do and the number of views, likes, etc. So, I'm sure they are very motivated to post videos. Remember that they bought the Hartley from revenue made from their videos. More power to them!

I've said this a few times before, but I really enjoy the format of your highlights videos with the dialouge you and Aaron engage in. I enjoy hearing Aaron's thoughts about topics too. Great job to you both!
I vote no boxwood hedge for the cut flower garden. Also, thinking extending the tile out of the Hartley and doing at least a landing but also the walkway could be nice too.
I lost my mom when I was 7 and I’m 31 now but when you said your mom mentioned she didn’t think y’all would be out pickin wheat again…that broke my heart! 🤣 Hibiscus - the deer ate All the leaves from mine last fall. I left it hoping it would survive - I’d just planted it a month before!! So come spring was just a dry stick 😫 when everything was leafing. I yanked it out and saw what looked like a live tap root so I put it in a bucket with some water put in garage and forgot about it for a Month!! Then found it stuck it in the ground thinking what the heck we’ll see..... Totally Alive and doing Great!!😂😃🤗💚

I was a jet engine mechanic before I retired. My hands were always a wreck. We double dated with a friend and his new girlfriend. When she was asked what she did, she replied nail technician. Laura and Aaron, you film wonderfully and provide a great resource for us. Please do not apologize for not filming every moment of your gardening life. You have the right to chose, you have the right to enjoy your yard, your mom and making those decisions. We will still be watching and enjoying your videos. A porch at the shed would provide a great respite from the heat while spending time admiring your open garden. I can see you sitting on a rocking chair with your gin & tonic enjoying the peace. Think about it.
Omg! I used to give plasma each week just to buy more hibiscus! My favorite! Last year I cross pollinated my red and yellow hibiscus and the red had yellow under the petals and the yellow had a red center. They both had tons of pods by the end of the year and i planted them, there's about 18, 6 in. plants so far...can't wait to see how they turn out!
Ladies, the best tank tops in the world (imho) are the Deluth Trading "No Yank Tanks"! They are amazing with an extra long length so there isn't any creeping up. They also last forever....I think the slate flooring would look formal, rich & gorgeous leading out into the garden.
If Laura want a meadow look in the orchard, it seems appropriate to have a cottage looking shed with a porch (for seating/sitting/a couple of chairs for the quaint look). But you could add it later if the building is not too close to the cut garden.
I wish you could interview your mom someday. I would love to hear a little bit about her life and how she raised such a wonderful daughter! She seems is be so unique and we would learn so much from her as you have. You truly have such a wonderful woman as your mother! ♥️💕♥️ I have a feeling she could teach us all a lot about living life to the fullest.

Every year I threw away my Hibiscus because I thought they didn't survive in the pots after winter. Well, NOW I KNOW BETTER thanks TO YOU! My two Hibiscus are ready to bloom again. LOL.
I live in northeast Illinois and different Hibiscus border both sides of my property. They come back each year bigger and better. When my dog breaks a branch off I put it in my watering can fir a week then plun it in the ground, works almost every time. Currently have around 20 of 5 or 6 varieties. Love them. 🌺
I get excited when I see Laura's gardening hands. Makes me feel that I'm in the cool girl's gardening club with my wonderfully dirty gardening hands too! Willows do amazing by a pond and don’t shed nearly as much leaves as they do in a spot where is doesn’t have consistent moisture. I have 3 planted by our pond and don’t have any issues. The ones planted out in the middle lot do suffer from lots of thining and leaf drop in zone 8b.

Oh me too! I look at my hands and dismiss the need to make more effort because its not my way. And I LOVE the things my hands do, planting, making flower arrangements, working in clay, etc. So I love my hands
For the Hartley, you’ll be looking for outdoor rated fans. There are fans that are rated for damp locations (for use in covered porch areas) and for wet locations (where there is direct exposure to rain or water). Sagging blades may mean the fan is very old, but could be from incorrectly using an interior fan outside. Downrods come in 12”, 18”, 24”, 36”, 48”, 60”, and 72” lengths. I would suggest looking into your options and ordering sooner than later. I work at a lighting showroom and we are finding that most of the brands we carry have back order ETAs of late August to mid-September, minimum. Be mindful of the fans’ blade span with the shades and chandelier as well. Hope this information helps!
If only I lived near by I could make the jams, preserves and chutneys while you guys grow the harvest - what a great combination that would be. You’re pretty good at filming a range of projects and there is a balance between filming and family time.

I think you would both love a little porch on the shed so that you could sit and look out over the cut flower garden. Also if you just keep your fan spinning and never turn it off the blades tend not to droop. They droop when moisture settles onto them. Obviously outdoor fan blades are best but in a pinch if you find something you love you can possibly make it work. 😁
I love seeing your 'real hands' in your videos; short nails, dirt under your nails, dirt everywhere lol!! I always kind of counted it a 'badge of honor' when I literally had to bleach my fingernails to make them presentable enough to go back to work on Mondays after a full weekend of workiing in my gardens.
I wouldn't enclose the cut flower garden but love the idea of a secret garden maybe hidden somewhere out on the property and build for the children to find..with beautiful whimsical things inside from fairies to dragons to butterflies etc :) talk about new video thread!!!

I was stopped in my tracks when I stopped at our local nursery and there was a dinner plate hibiscus, light pink with a dark center. It was gorgeous!!!
I think slate coming out the doors and a wide “deck” around the Hartley would be beautiful, even an area large enough for a bistro table and chairs. What about a two-plank fence around the cutting garden; either matching your existing fence or stained black (my preference) to match other structures nearby? You could stop the fence a sufficient distance back from the pathways and plant a small tractor-safe evergreen (or 2 or 3) at the end of the fence row. I vote YES on a porch in front of the shed!
My house is like all glass and OCD about my windows lol but the windex glass cleaner that attaches to your garden hose is honestly so easy and fast! I use that between getting them professionally cleaned. I highly recommend
i'm still thinking of a black fence 'round the cut flower garden like you have in your raised bed areas, and each section should be removable: when it's time to plow you just remove a section, drive in, plow, leave, and put the fence back.. lavender sounds beautiful but you still have the access issue... the fan "propellers" are called fan "blades", just FYI... and mice in the drawer, omg.. we had baby RATS in a drawer in the garage when we first moved into our house... i was retching all the way to the garbage, egads, horrible horrible... you and your mom are exactly as we see you in the videos.. i only met the two of you briefly when i visited the garden center a few years ago, and honestly, it was a dream come true to meet you (you may not remember but i burst into tears because i'm such a fangirl nerd, sigh).. anyhoo... you are both just as sweet and friendly and down to earth as we see you here on video.. that's a very good thing..we need more people like you and your family in our world... great week!! :)

The best part in all videos was where you try and make gardening and maintenance simple for those who want a beautiful yard . You started from a small area in your garden then worked at your grandparents garden and then you made lovely wheat wreaths then planted a bunch trees around your city and came back with simple grasses to your garden. Curious - how much water do you use on a daily/weekly/monthly/yearly basis? Do you measure? If not, would you be amendable to doing a video on your water usage? Get a wet rated fan for the Hartley! We own a beach house and did "damp" rated, they lasted a few years, but we replaced them with wet rated and they have been much better!
In Pennsylvania, I believe most of the state is between zone 5 and 6b. I don’t think it’s colder than 5 though. Also, yes, we do get snow and ice every year in most parts of Pennsylvania! We typically have all 4 true seasons, though our winters haven’t all been as snowy as years past. Makes you appreciate each season to experience each ☺️
Hibiscus overwinters here in Michigan's Upper Peninsula (zone 4b). We warn people who shop at St Ignace In Bloom not to expect any green until at least June 10, but they are massive in size by early August. They are amazing until frost.
windex has an attachment to add to your garden hose, that has the windex in it. It mixes with the water from the hose, we use it every year, especially for our 2nd story windows. Does a great job.
I live in Florida 9b. My Candy Crush hibiscus dies back completely and comes up fresh in the spring. I prune out the dead in early spring. That’s very different than most of the hibiscus that is more common in this area. They usually stay green through the winter and are pruned back in early spring to maintain size.

I can completely understand the heat, I live in Louisiana and our heat index has been between 110 and 113 degree. The only difference between our heat and y'all's is we have horrible humidity but you are right you can find bad in all weather! One the bright side my plants have been loving the heat and we've had rain every single day for 3 weeks, which my plants also love 😁
Laura and Aaron, you talk about the smoke, your planting zone changing from 5-6, organic gardening and concerns about drought and water… but you have never mentioned environmental concerns. It would be amazing if your channel could do an episode about it, or mention an environmental organization we can support. If we mobilize gardeners we can make a difference.

I dropped some sunflower seeds in the storage room in the basement of our apartment building once. I was in a hurry and put them in a pile in a basket, on a shelf on eye level. Next time I checked, I just found the husks... Mice. They sometimes make it to our 5th story balcony!
Here in the UK, during a drought, we often have a hose-pipe ban where it becomes illegal to water our gardens or wash our cars using a hose. Do you have anything similar in Oregon?
The smoke made it all the way to the East Coast. I'm just south of Boston and it made the sky very hazy last week and created some really interesting sunrises, sunsets, and even effected the moon, making them look almost neon orange.
Regarding the Hartley and your excitement of a dream realized, when we align with others, your overwhelm becomes our overwhelm too. I had tears in my eyes when i commented last week. I was wondering how the the Christmas tree and lights looked!
We only can water our grass twice a week right now in Wyoming. 🥺 It’s getting bad new fires everyday. Our water shortage is because they can’t find some chemical for the treatment center. Praying for everyone this year! We all need the moisture! 😭🌧

Slate is pretty, but it is not uniform in thickness. This makes it very difficult to install and a real trip hazard.

If Laura want a meadow look in the orchard, it seems appropriate to have a cottage looking shed with a porch (for seating/sitting/a couple of chairs for the quaint look). But you could add it later if the building is not too close to the cut garden.

Every year I threw away my Hibiscus because I thought they didn't survive in the pots after winter. Well, NOW I KNOW BETTER thanks TO YOU! My two Hibiscus are ready to bloom again. LOL.
There is an annual Hibiscus that garden centers sell for containers…it does not come back unless you’re in the warmer climates.
I very nearly threw mine away this year but soooo glad I didn’t. Haven’t flowered as yet but plenty of buds. Can’t wait to see it in full bloom 🙂
We wintered over a Hibiscus in the sunroom and it bloomed in the winter with snow on the ground!!
I live in Pennsylvania. I have the dinner plates hibiscus and it's planted in my landscape. YES THEY COME BACK EVERY YEAR FOR ME
I live in northeast Illinois and different Hibiscus border both sides of my property. They come back each year bigger and better. When my dog breaks a branch off I put it in my watering can fir a week then plun it in the ground, works almost every time. Currently have around 20 of 5 or 6 varieties. Love them. 🌺

Willows do amazing by a pond and don’t shed nearly as much leaves as they do in a spot where is doesn’t have consistent moisture. I have 3 planted by our pond and don’t have any issues. The ones planted out in the middle lot do suffer from lots of thining and leaf drop in zone 8b.

Oh me too! I look at my hands and dismiss the need to make more effort because its not my way. And I LOVE the things my hands do, planting, making flower arrangements, working in clay, etc. So I love my hands
For the Hartley, you’ll be looking for outdoor rated fans. There are fans that are rated for damp locations (for use in covered porch areas) and for wet locations (where there is direct exposure to rain or water). Sagging blades may mean the fan is very old, but could be from incorrectly using an interior fan outside. Downrods come in 12”, 18”, 24”, 36”, 48”, 60”, and 72” lengths. I would suggest looking into your options and ordering sooner than later. I work at a lighting showroom and we are finding that most of the brands we carry have back order ETAs of late August to mid-September, minimum. Be mindful of the fans’ blade span with the shades and chandelier as well. Hope this information helps!

I think you would both love a little porch on the shed so that you could sit and look out over the cut flower garden. Also if you just keep your fan spinning and never turn it off the blades tend not to droop. They droop when moisture settles onto them. Obviously outdoor fan blades are best but in a pinch if you find something you love you can possibly make it work. 😁
I love seeing your 'real hands' in your videos; short nails, dirt under your nails, dirt everywhere lol!! I always kind of counted it a 'badge of honor' when I literally had to bleach my fingernails to make them presentable enough to go back to work on Mondays after a full weekend of workiing in my gardens.

It's been so wet, hot, AND humid in my area that the conditions pretty much mimic a greenhouse. The weeds are definitely loving it!

I was stopped in my tracks when I stopped at our local nursery and there was a dinner plate hibiscus, light pink with a dark center. It was gorgeous!!!

I’m in a zone 9 in alabama and the hibiscus stay green until frost, under a cover they stay green year round and will bloom regularly in the summer.
It's 94 degrees and humid in GA. Omg the humidity takes your breath away when you walk outside. The feels like temp is 104.
I think slate coming out the doors and a wide “deck” around the Hartley would be beautiful, even an area large enough for a bistro table and chairs.
What about a two-plank fence around the cutting garden; either matching your existing fence or stained black (my preference) to match other structures nearby? You could stop the fence a sufficient distance back from the pathways and plant a small tractor-safe evergreen (or 2 or 3) at the end of the fence row.
I vote YES on a porch in front of the shed!

My house is like all glass and OCD about my windows lol but the windex glass cleaner that attaches to your garden hose is honestly so easy and fast! I use that between getting them professionally cleaned. I highly recommend
i'm still thinking of a black fence 'round the cut flower garden like you have in your raised bed areas, and each section should be removable: when it's time to plow you just remove a section, drive in, plow, leave, and put the fence back.. lavender sounds beautiful but you still have the access issue... the fan "propellers" are called fan "blades", just FYI... and mice in the drawer, omg.. we had baby RATS in a drawer in the garage when we first moved into our house... i was retching all the way to the garbage, egads, horrible horrible... you and your mom are exactly as we see you in the videos.. i only met the two of you briefly when i visited the garden center a few years ago, and honestly, it was a dream come true to meet you (you may not remember but i burst into tears because i'm such a fangirl nerd, sigh).. anyhoo... you are both just as sweet and friendly and down to earth as we see you here on video.. that's a very good thing..we need more people like you and your family in our world... great week!! :)

Try rubbing peroxide into your hands and see if that takes some of the stain away
The best part in all videos was where you try and make gardening and maintenance simple for those who want a beautiful yard . You started from a small area in your garden then worked at your grandparents garden and then you made lovely wheat wreaths then planted a bunch trees around your city and came back with simple grasses to your garden. You are very kind person Laura .
Curious - how much water do you use on a daily/weekly/monthly/yearly basis? Do you measure? If not, would you be amendable to doing a video on your water usage? I am very interested in sustainability and land use and would love to learn from an established gardener/plant person such as yourself.

Get a wet rated fan for the Hartley! We own a beach house and did "damp" rated, they lasted a few years, but we replaced them with wet rated and they have been much better!

In Pennsylvania, I believe most of the state is between zone 5 and 6b. I don’t think it’s colder than 5 though. Also, yes, we do get snow and ice every year in most parts of Pennsylvania! We typically have all 4 true seasons, though our winters haven’t all been as snowy as years past. Makes you appreciate each season to experience each ☺️

Hibiscus overwinters here in Michigan's Upper Peninsula (zone 4b). We warn people who shop at St Ignace In Bloom not to expect any green until at least June 10, but they are massive in size by early August. They are amazing until frost.
windex has an attachment to add to your garden hose, that has the windex in it. It mixes with the water from the hose, we use it every year, especially for our 2nd story windows. Does a great job.

I live in Florida 9b. My Candy Crush hibiscus dies back completely and comes up fresh in the spring. I prune out the dead in early spring. That’s very different than most of the hibiscus that is more common in this area. They usually stay green through the winter and are pruned back in early spring to maintain size.

I can completely understand the heat, I live in Louisiana and our heat index has been between 110 and 113 degree. The only difference between our heat and y'all's is we have horrible humidity but you are right you can find bad in all weather! One the bright side my plants have been loving the heat and we've had rain every single day for 3 weeks, which my plants also love 😁
Laura and Aaron, you talk about the smoke, your planting zone changing from 5-6, organic gardening and concerns about drought and water… but you have never mentioned environmental concerns. It would be amazing if your channel could do an episode about it, or mention an environmental organization we can support. If we mobilize gardeners we can make a difference.

I dropped some sunflower seeds in the storage room in the basement of our apartment building once. I was in a hurry and put them in a pile in a basket, on a shelf on eye level. Next time I checked, I just found the husks... Mice. They sometimes make it to our 5th story balcony!
Here in the UK, during a drought, we often have a hose-pipe ban where it becomes illegal to water our gardens or wash our cars using a hose. Do you have anything similar in Oregon?

The smoke made it all the way to the East Coast. I'm just south of Boston and it made the sky very hazy last week and created some really interesting sunrises, sunsets, and even effected the moon, making them look almost neon orange.
Regarding the Hartley and your excitement of a dream realized, when we align with others, your overwhelm becomes our overwhelm too. I had tears in my eyes when i commented last week. I was wondering how the the Christmas tree and lights looked!
We only can water our grass twice a week right now in Wyoming. 🥺 It’s getting bad new fires everyday. Our water shortage is because they can’t find some chemical for the treatment center. Praying for everyone this year! We all need the moisture! 😭🌧
