In the future, I will stop and look more closely at all the types of plants in the gardens I pass by on my walks. What a delight to see all the beauty you've created. Thank you!

Like the bonsaid bed you mention, but we didn’t get a closeup! Would love more focus on the plantings and beds themselves!

    I have very fond memories of hollyhocks growing near my home in Michigan during my childhood. I was always curious about the plants in our neighborhood and my own yard. My stepfather grew up in New England and absolutely LOVED roses. Those he raised back then were such beauties! Thank You for sharing SO much about your family Jack. When I think back to my feelings when I visited Mackinaw I felt it was truly magical. Now I have a deeper understanding of those who played a part in creating and maintaining that wonderful magic. You have followed their example in positively STELLAR fashion, I LOVE following your vlogs. Keep on keepin on, and thank you once again 😊

    Hi Jack! I hope you see this message and will respond to me! I'm in need of your expert opinion. My husband and I bought a property that was established in 1927. I have a lovely old hedge of lilac (just the good old fashioned purple lilac) that stand about 15' tall. The hedge is about 75' long. The problem is that the lilacs develop powdery mildew, and although I treat it, it's never enough to eradicate it from the plants and surrounding soil. I've noticed that the green growth around the base of the plants (about 2-3 ft off the ground) does not have powdery mildew and I'm wondering if I just cut the hedge down (how many feet I do not know - please advise), would I be able to revive the plants? Also, once powdery mildew sets in, is that something I will have to deal with forever with those plants as well as in the soil? The powdery mildew is so unsightly that I'm considering removing the lilacs, if there is no better alternative. The hedge is a serious statement in our landscaping, and lovely, when the plants are healthy, but unsightly in late summer into fall. Would love your advice. Hope all is well with you!

    • @JackBarnwellDesign
      @JackBarnwellDesign  2 года назад +1

      It depends a lot on the air flow you may be able to establish- if the hedge is in an open area with enough regular breeze, thinning it significantly- I’m talking about 50-60% thinner than the “thicket” of hedge it likely is now, then you may be able to get enough ventilation through it to actually eradicate the fungus- however- it won’t kill the lilacs…

    • @lovetogarden2664
      @lovetogarden2664 2 года назад +1

      @@JackBarnwellDesign Hi Jack. Do you mean the powdery mildew won't kill the lilacs? And am I understanding that you think if I just leave the height, but remove 50-60% of the interior branches, I might get enough circulation to eradicate (or lessen) the mildew? If so, would I take out first - any dead branches, then move to the older larger branches? Is that the correct approach? Thanks so much.
