    “Old and Wise” by the Alan Parsons Project, sung by the great Colin Blunstone - and for an instrumental, “To the Unknown Man” by Vangelis. Both heartbreakers for me. And does “A Salty Dog” qualify? You mentioned some of my favorites tonight: One Time, Turn of the Century, Funny Ways, I Talk to the Wind (I like the Judy Dyble version too). I love the live version of C’est La Vie that’s on In Concert and Works Live. As for Loreena McKennitt, I heard “All Souls Night” on the radio many years ago and was entranced by it, and bought her whole catalog. I once saw her live from the front row - I remember “The Bonny Swans” was the song where she gave her electric guitarist the chance to rock out. My favorite of her albums is The Book of Secrets. Thanks guys!

    'Home' by Jethro Tull has always been a favourite of mine. Doesn't get mentioned very often, if at all, but it is just so beautiful and really conjures up feelings of nostalgia and sentimentality. When I hear the words 'Down steep and narrow lanes, I see the chimney smoking. Above the golden fields, know how the robin feels', my imagine takes me to those scenes.

    • @kevinmcgauhey9813
      @kevinmcgauhey9813 2 года назад

      Hello Greg, that's a good one (from Stormwatch, isn't it?) There's another Jethro Tull song that blew me away the other day - which is "And Further On" from the "A" album. I used to OWN the album but when it came up on RUclips the other day I thought, "what is this, some kind of bonus track?". But it's not, it's the album closer and it's altogether brilliant.

    • @greghansell5115
      @greghansell5115 2 года назад

      @@kevinmcgauhey9813 Hi Kevin. I've still got the vinyl records of both of those albums. Stormwatch was my introduction to Jethro Tull, hence my affection for 'Home'. However, I really like a lot of the songs off that album. Even though I don't rate 'A' as highly, there are some standouts for me, like 'Black Sunday' and '4WD (Low Ratio)'. I'm guessing many hardcore JT fans probably find the latter song not typical of JT, but I always enjoyed listening to it and I still do....another one I absolutely love (not sure if you'd call it a softie) would be 'Slow Marching Band' off Broadsword and the Beast. Oh the list could go on, even if I just stay with the discography of JT.

    • @kevinmcgauhey9813
      @kevinmcgauhey9813 2 года назад +1

      @@greghansell5115 Stormwatch really is a good album, I will have to replace my long lost cassette of it. I agree that A is not as great, but I might have to replace that long lost cassette too, (YES! to Black Sunday but my other favorite track is WorkingJohn, Working Joe !) I was very unhappy with Broadsword initially but the MANY excellent reissue bonus tracks made me scarf it up.... and though it's worth getting JUST for those bonus tracks, now I am starting to like the whole thing.

    Van Der Graaf Generator - Refugees
    Pink Floyd - Cymbaline
    King Crimson - I Talk To The Wind
    Uriah Heep - Circus
    Strawbs - Starshine / Angel Wine (The first part is a "softie" and the second part is less so... a great combination).
    ...and there are so many by Marillion
    ...and The Moody Blues are a given of which I absolutely adore.

That goes for everyone on the panel. I prefer a lively discussion instead of sighs and deafening silence. Second, you don't talk any more than anyone else. So, in short, forget the haters. Keep doing what you're doing. Thank you! See you next week😉

I've never heard a Yes album but, after listening to you guys, I know Drama is good and Heaven and Earth is the turd in the prog punch bowl. Chad’s choice of "Oh Life (There Must Be More)" by Alan Parson Project has David Pack on vocals. This whole album “Try Anything Once” maybe one of the most under appreciated APP albums. David Pack’s vocals on the Ambrosia albums was phenomenal, and easily many softy prog songs are on those. Of course APP essentially started with Ambrosia included.

Just listened to Runrig's live farewell album, was really impressed by the musicianship and some great songs, never listened to them before, also from your part of the world. Keep up the good work on the channel, I think you add a great dynamic with your extensive music knowledge and the way you articulate it. All the best Gary.

    I know I am stepping out of the prog genre a little here (or maybe not?) but I have always liked this song and I find it fascinating as they never really recorded anything else quite like this. On the surface its a unique ballad but there is something eerie and sinister beneath the surface, that I can’t quite put my finger on and it makes the song even more interesting.

      I'm another big fan of that song. Well, I posted on this thread yesterday, or thought I did, but it seems to have disappeared. So I'll try again. First of all, splendid show, fellas - one of the best yet! I love the concept - so many great ballads in progressive rock. Here's a few that I came up with, trying not to duplicate any that any of you mentioned (can we all agree that Genesis "Entangled" may be the best ever??! 🙂):
    1. Strawbs, "Starshine/Angel Wine", from Ghosts.
    2. Genesis, "Many Too Many", from ATTWT (had to mention one from that album, given our recent discussions on that one!).
    3. Arena, "Crying for Help IV", from Songs from the Lion's Cage".
    4. Camel, "Breathless", from Breathless. Great vocals from Richard Sinclair.
    5. Barclay James Harvest, "Mockingbird", from Once Again.
    6. Echolyn, "Entry 11-19-93", from "As the World"
    7. Jethro Tull, "Reasons for Waiting", from Stand Up.
    8. Tony Banks, with Fish, "Angel Eyes", from Still.
    9. Moody Blues, "Eyes of a Child", from To Our Children's Children Children.
    10. Anthony Phillips "Now What (Are They Doing to My Little Friends)", from Wise After the Event.
    Thanks for a great show, guys!

Kudos to Ken for promoting The Strawbs and Loreena McKennitt ( 2 musical treasures ) , to Eric who continues to sing the praises of Camel ( finally heard some respect for their 1st album ), Kudos to Steven for steadfastly recognizing the genius of Steven Wilson and PT , and finally to both Steven and Louis ( first time I have ever agreed with Louis , in fact rarely have I heard most of the albums Louis likes ) for recognizing the masterpiece that is Fish's final album. Kudos to Pete for recommending Scheherazade 's Ocean Gypsy .Now a question for a man ( Ken ) who's opinion I have come to greatly to respect . I'm probably a bit older than all ( turn 70 in November ) . Do you have any positive feelings at all for
    a) Barclay James Harvest or b ) Bound For Infinity from Prologue by Renaissance ( Annie's first appearance ) or c) a little known or appreciated album by a King Crimson offshoot , entitled Mcdonald and Giles . I find a b and c to still all be stimulating after all these years . Enjoy your commentary each time I'm lucky enough to see SOT and especially find your knowledge of Krautrock to be top notch , although I've never heard you mention Tangerine Dream .

      Kevin I like 70s BJH particularly Time Honored Ghosts and Once Again but I'm not a massive fan. Not sure they ever played in the US so maybe that had something to do with it. Love the Mellotron. Prologue was a solid album but I think a foreshadowing of better things to come. Was never a fan of the McDonald and Giles album. I bought it 45 years ago and couldn't get into it. Maybe If I revisit it now I'd have an appreciation for it. With respect to Tangerine Dream I was a fan all the way into the 90s. While Electronic Meditation and perhaps Alpha Centauri and Atem can be considered krautrock I wouldn't categorize them that way once they discovered synthesizers. We don't talk about the band much because I don't think too many of the other panelists are into them (I could be wrong).
