Allow the horse to figure out what to do, you can only set the horse up for the jump, it's up to the horse to jump it 😊

    It's been many years since I went hunting so not sure what's changed with time and what's different about the UK vs Pennsylvania, US hunts. One, we weren't allowed to ride straight across the fields, but along the edges so as not to damage them, especially in muddy conditions. Two, nobody left their gates open so we always had to jump in and out. Three, I guess Foxhounds are a louder than Bloodhounds, as you could hear them baying miles away, along with the blasting horns. Four, we were never allowed to pass a red coat (but that might have been because I was under 18 at the time.) We went on real hunts, not drag hunts but in all those years we never once killed a fox. They'd go aground and we'd go off to the next one. Anyway, this sure brought back a lot of memories. (PS: Why are the Bloodhounds running one way and you all are riding the other way?)

    • @leonamay8776
      @leonamay8776 4 года назад +2

      @@gailrodgers4434 ah, makes sense that you wouldn't catch anything. Healthy foxes will simply escape by going aground...
      There are some UK hunts (although legislation depends on where you are, which will influence practices) that illegally board up entrances to badger dens and some of the fox burrows (so the fox can't get in there) and if they still do, the terrier men release the terriers to flush them out... It's pretty nasty imo and also means that they end up killing healthy foxes (and not the old / sick ones as some claim).
      Cub hunting is also really disgusting imo....
      Edit: I personally really want to experience "clean booth hunting".

    Do ya have the huntsman? Like the man or woman that you can’t pass? We do in Ireland we also don’t gallop through the field we stick to single file at the edge of the field so we don’t tear up the farmers land and yes we hunt real foxes but 9/10 the foxes aren’t killed we just hunt them away with hounds cause other than that the farmers will shoot them

    • @Equinologee
      @Equinologee  5 лет назад +1

      Yes they are at the front of the ride. The lady in red is the optional jumping field master. This is the hunt masters land and anyway all farmers land we cross we get permission so they are fully aware of what fields we are crossing. If they don't want us across the middle of the field we stick to the outside. 😊

Im glad national sports of some countries is changing to a more humane type..like the spanish countries banning stab n jab bullfighting and instead having alternative forms of it where the bull does not get hurt...people jump over the bulls horns or they use a velcro band with targets on it etc. still dramatic but humane!

    Took my mad bad pony on a childrens meet/intro hunt last winter and had big trouble because he would run like heck at the front of the field (obeying rules i promise) with the big horses and threw his toys out the pram when we had to wait to get through gates etc with the non jumping field (fences were over our normal jumping ability and ground was so deep I didn't dare try). Non jumping field master was lovely and saw I was struggling so told me to gallop like mad up a huge field to puff him out... didn't work so in the end I went home early as I was causing chaos.
    Once I got back to the trailer someone suggested trying bloodhounds because apparently then theres less stopping and more running fast which might suit him, but watching this theres no way I'm getting over those fences even with 50 horses giving a lead!
    Wish there was some middle ground where you jump instead of opening gates but don't have to jump 3 foot over a field fence!

    • @Equinologee
      @Equinologee  5 лет назад +1

      Bloodhounding is better as it's a set route with set stopping places. We as a hunt always have an optional jumping master. I've been in her group a couple times when Carrie was playing up, it's abit more chilled and she will let us know what jumps are coming up so we can choose if we want to jump it or not. Most of the time there are jumps are everyone, massive hedges for the crazy folk, some in between for people like me who have some self preservation lol and smaller logs etc for people non very confident jumping 😊
      Regarding the gate etc most of the time we have foot followers who go ahead in advance and open everything so there is minimal waiting 😊 X

    • @FitzyFitz97
      @FitzyFitz97 5 лет назад

      @@Equinologee Thankyou for such a detailed reply!
      Definitely sounds better, after I went I spoke to a few people who all thought the intro hunt was a mistake as the pace was far too slow and stoppy for a fit mad pony, shame I didn't know that beforehand! I've only been a couple times on borrowed horses before then so I hardly know anything about it really.
      The times i''ve been on a borrowed pony she was steady and anti social so no trouble stopping for the few gates even if everyone else galloped off, my own pony is very forward and clingy though so he was practically jumping up and down on the spot as there weren't many foot followers so gates mostly had to be opened and closed by the riders.
      Probably need to give it a while and practice jumping more but sounds like I'd better find/contact the local bloodhounds and see what they think, I don't need to be flat out all day but keeping moving might make the difference!
      I DO jump but not very big and don't get much practice. Pony has quite a pop though and I'm sure he'd fling himself over if it meant keeping up with the big boys whether I liked it or not, so as long as going is not terrible and jumps are on the small side for hunt jumps we'd be alright, just need to make a friend who knows the rules so I don't get in trouble!

      This was across the huntmasters land.
      When going across farmers land the hunt confirms the route with farmers anyway so we already have permission. If a farmer doesn't want us across the middle of the field we will go single file along the outside. 👍

If it's not hunting why the need to trail hunt a Fox scent, if these dogs are not here to kill Foxes? @@2000guineas we don't use a fox scent at all. Also Bloodhounds and foxhounds are very different. Bloodhounds like we use are bred and trained to follow a human trail. Fox hounds are more prey driven as it were to follow a fox, and have been bred for this.

      @@Equinologee The point is Fox Hunting with dogs is "so called" against the law why the need for the dogs, if you have no purpose of catching and killing a fox, that's what they are bred for they are working dogs in a pack, it cost money and time to keep them if they can't do what they were bred for why have them? You can't have a football match without a ball, this old English traditional goes way back, the dogs only ever really existed to do their job.
