I sewed gazillions of items (clothing, linens, and curtains) for many decades on my grandmother’s Singer treadle sewing machine that she purchased around 1915. In 1998, it was lost in a fire. Recently, someone gave me an old Kenmore zig-zag sewing machine Model 158-17501. I had no clue about adjusting the tension. Your video saved my sanity (that’s important, since I’m in my 80s and plan to resume sewing!). So, Tom, thank you very much! I read everyone’s comments and I subscribed to your presentations! ~~ Mary
my mother passed away a few months ago, and i pulled out her old sewing machine to make souvenirs for christmas. thank you thomas, for making my day- and teaching me what she didn’t get a chance to. merry christmas. 💗🎄
Thomas, this is THE BEST tutorial explaining how to thread and check tension on these old Kenmores. You not only explained it very clearly, you also showed excellent, clear video which us visual learners so desperately need. I just bought two Kenmore 158 series vintage machines and I haven't been able to sew on them because neither one came with a manual and no one on RUclips could manage to explain getting it threaded in a way that I could understand. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much!
I can't believe this I have spent days searching the internet hours upon hours several spoons of thread testing my machine and this is the only video that has ever shown me that little screw on the bobbin casing it absolutely fixed my issue I think you so much!
Thank you. My husband bought my machine new back in 1974 for $300 which for a couple living on a $ 5,000 a year graduate school assistanceship was a huge amount of money. I have all the original parts and manual and have to say the machine is built like a Mack truck, but I was constantly in fear of the tension. But now I know what to look for. You are a Godsend and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Now, I will have the courage to try sewing some doll clothes for my grandchildren.
Aww, that is such a great story. Im so happy I could help you. Can I ask one small favor of you, can you please subscribe to my channel I want to get to 10k subs and its been hard to do
Thank you so much for this video. My mom gave me her Kenmore 158.1785 when she moved and it hadn’t been used in over 20 years. I got it serviced, took pics of how it was threaded, and then took it all out to learn on my own. But even using the original manual, which is not very helpful, it was really tough for me to do. I got it in no time watching your video. Thank you!!
Thank you for keeping it simple. I appreciate the detailed explanation and getting to see up close what you are doing. Love the alligator description lol. Hopefully you will tell us more about the things you’ve learned.
Thank you! I learned to sew with a machine by watching your video and threading my grandmother's machine for the first time. Whenever something is going wrong, I watch it again and learn I forgot a step! Such a simple instruction video and I usually don't leave comments but I just really appreciated how many times you have helped me with this one video - Rachelle.

Lifesaver!!! ❤️ Picked up a great tip after struggling with threading the needle for years.... Moisten the eye of the needle, rather than the thread.... It really works!!! Yah, youtube 😍👍

I appreciate you!! Im hemming a dress for the first time and I knew my tension was off and my settings couldnt fix it so I figured I was doing something wrong. 😅 Im excited to get started
Bingo! That is the threading mistake I've been making. I think I used to know that but had not used my Kenmore for a while and maybe forgot. Thanks for the great tutorial.
Omg I've been trying to figure this out for hours, and have been getting so frustrated trying ti figure out what im doing wrong. You are so very right, no one online seems to mention this! THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH! 😭 100% subscribing! Thank you again! ❤
Thank you, this video was a great help. My wife was trying to get her mom's Kenmore 158 series sew, no manual, but it would not. Until I saw the part on the bobbin tension. I adjusted it and now the machine works great. Thank you so much.
Thank you this is the best video I've watched so far I've been trying to set up my sewing machine for a while now and I've had nothing but problems I watched your video and got it right off the bat thank you
OMG Thank you, I wasn’t doing it right and thought my machine was broken lol!! Exactly what you mentioned as the problem I wasn’t putting the thread in the tensioner the right way I was resting it on the spring thing there And not threading it into that crevice as you mentioned! So my thread had no tension And the thread kept getting caught down in my machine under down in where the bottom thread gets pulled up!! I think your video is one of the best self help videos I’ve ever seen! I don’t have to get Rid of my machine now and we can actually use it yay!! Blessings
I purchased the manual online a few years back and it does not say to bring the string all the way around the tension dial. This explains why it rarely works properly. Thank you so much
Thank you so much for this video! I hadn't used my Kenmore in 20 yrs. Now I have to alter clothes for my daughter & your video put me on track!! Awesome!
Thank you for the excellent video on how to properly adjust the tensioner on my sewing machine. After 11 years of not using it I forgot 1 very important detail that cost me more time then I want to admit.
Thank you! My manual didn't explain which side of the tab on the right of the tensioner that my thread should go so I was going in front of it (closer to me than to the machine). And OMG, was I STRUGGLING with poor tension! But after trying to follow several tutorial videos I finally found this one and you showed very clearly the one part that I was messing up. Now that I've got the tension problems solved I absolutely love my new (very old) Kenmore machine! When the tension was a problem I briefly (and enthusiastically) considered launching it from the roof of the tallest building in my city and going back to 100% hand sewing everything. But now that I know how to work with my machine I'm a lot happier with it and with the results I'm getting.
So glad I found your video. I looked at 2 other videos (not yours) and they were totally wrong. So frustrating. I almost gave up. Thank you thank you thank you!!!
This is such a good, thorough explanation. I thought I've followed the instruction book carefully, but I've had tension problems, which are very frustrating. This is a good machine when threaded and tensioned properly. Thank you so much!!!
Thanks a million, even the manual didn't help me. Now I can finally use it after being stumped for almost a year. Nobody knows how to use sewing machines anymore there's no one to ask for help and luckily I have the same model.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you ❤ I have had this machine for many years & put it away because it kept bunching up, thread breaking, even needles breaking...I gave up! I decided today to give it another try & thanks to you I think I might like to start sewing 😚 I also found out why my needles probably broke...I wasn't setting my bobbin holder in correctly! I am so grateful for you & your video❣ I've subscribed to your channel & look forward to seeing more. Thank you again 💓
Though I finally discovered this on my own awhile back after I unearthed the original manual, you are right in that NOBODY explains this properly. I was having constant issues until I started doing it correctly. I like that you explain the bobbin tension as well. I thought fir the longest time I'd broken my machine. Which I may have if I'd kept going with the tension all wrong!
@@ThomasShue any advice for using a twin needle ? I’m finding that one of the top threads has good tension and creating a good stitch but the 2nd one is resulting in loops on the top side of the fabric. I have a kenmore 158.130 Not unsurprisingly but the thread that is causing the loops is the one that I have placed behind the tension disks (as directed in another video I watched) as opposed to the one I have placed inside the tension disk as you normally would .
Dido to Agnes comment! I have a Kenmore Model 85 machine which hasn't been used for years. I have cleaned and oiled the machine but struggled with threading and inserting the bobbin into the bobbin case (figured this out) correctly. Your video was excellent! I knew there was a missing step at the tensioner and your video explained the steps perfectly! I appreciate the extra info about the bobbin tension as well. I'm going to use different color threads to check the stitches. Thank you!!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I’ve been doing it all wrong for years 😳 Couldn’t understand why my fabric was puckering 😮 Incredible, helpful tutorial 👍 I completely missed the extra little arm on the tension knob and tightened the little screw on the bobbin case. Brilliant 🤩
Took up sewing again after hadn’t sewn in many many years when the covid started. I took my mother in laws old Kenmore 1625 model. Thankfully she took good care of it and all the parts are still with it and the manual too. I’m just having a problem with the tension and hopefully this video helps. A lot has come back to me about sewing but still learning. Noticed the stitching on the underneath look looped. Your point about how important it is to thread made a lot of sense to me after I watched the video. I KNEW that but didn’t do it! DUH! Thank you and hopefully this works.
Wow, I was having trouble with the tension. I tightened the bobbin and voila! it’s working. I bought this older very heavy Kenmore that is clean and supposedly worked. Indeed it does sew beautifully. Thank-you so much!
Thank you so much!!! 😭😭😭 I have been struggling and trying to figure out my moms old machine and I have been having such a hard time finding videos for this similar machine. (I can’t find the manual online either!) Now I can finally start to figure it all out. VERY APPRECIATED!!
Thank you so very much and God bless you! I'm learning to sew with my grandmother's Kenmore Ultra-Stitch 6 and this really helped me out. Now I'm going to try and sew a pillow...hopefully the bobbing thread won't get messed up, that intimidates me at the moment. Thanks again for your super helpful video!
Thank you so much!!! I have been going crazy all day, I had set the top tension very high already and there were still loops forming at the bottom... Turns out I had made the mistake at the tension disk that you point out here! My stitches are looking much better now! Thank you!! (I have a different machine, Primera FY 811, but it threads just like the one you show)
Wow--our Goodwill stores would never sell a sewing machine that cheap. I picked up a 6 stitch Kenmore for around $15 (with my senior discount). I've had the Ultra Stitch 8 for 40 years and it has been a wonderful machine. Good luck with yours!
I'm grateful for the video... I hadn't done any sewing in years... just too busy... now I'm older... quite a bit older... and I had forgotten how to thread my sewing machine... I never learned properly how to set the tension on my machine.. it's always been by guess and by golly... One more hint... which might help folks with older eyes like mine... I couldn't see to thread the needle... and oh my it was a pain... then I googled and got some suggestions... putting a bit of hair spray on the thread tip and letting it dry is working... Eureka!
The best tip is to use a piece of white paper behind the needle. I like to use the end flaps of small boxes that small items are packaged in. These flaps are sturdy enough to stand on the presser foot and lean against the presser bar. Then with a small light,or flashlight coming from behind needle, you can see the eye easily..
Thank you. No offense, but in my mind's eye I see a little old gray haired lady doing this. I'm surprised at the number of men doing these tutorials. I love it. I just bought my very first sewing machine because now that I'm middle aged nothing fits so I'm going to tailor my clothing. It's a Kenmore 12 stitch, I bought it at Goodwill for $10. I know how to press the pedal with my foot and guide the material that's it. So naturally I'm learning how to even put thread in it. I've already cleaned it up and oiled it so I'm ready to start learning. Thanks again!
Thank you so much! I have been frustrated for so long! The diagrams in the book do not show you that trick over the tab at the tension disk nor does the book describe that move! You have taken the frustration out of using my hand me down machine. It sews great now!
Thanks dude, you save the day. I had no clue which way to route those sewing threads now I can try this machine out. I appreciate it helping out one prepper.
I just purchased one of these machines with high hopes that I would learn to sew😆 but I have no idea what I’m doing. I think now I know how to thread thanks to you, now.. what’s next 😳 Thanks for this video sir!!
I learned to sew on a Kenmore 1756, and have never had a problem threading any machine without a manual, ever. Must be because I learned to engage that tension spring with attention.
so that is the problem i had. thank you. I bought this machine for hardly nothing and is awesome i havent used it in a while and forgot how to thread it.
This was very helpful! I will be sewing on my mother-in-law's Sears Kenmore Model 158-12521. I am very excited to work on my quilts. My Brother does not have the throat space needed for larger projects. Your guidance will help me be more successful on this machine.
Thank you so much! I've had my great grandmother's sowing machine for years but I could never get the tension right, thank you so so much for this video!
Thank you for this video. I have seen others and learned from them but yours gave me even more information on threading the tension. I bought at 158 machine this year. There was no manual so I bought a reprint on line but the diagram showing how to thread the tension was not much help. I thought I had it right but will be re-threading the again to be sure. I did subscribe.
Thank you I still have the problem with the tension not sure what to do I have the 158.18023 model but I really appreciate you going over the proper way to top thread
Yep, that's it on that tensioner. You're correct, these machines show you how to thread them. I just wasn't sure about this tensioning disc. I didn't want to pull it all the way forward
this was a FANTASTIC demo thanks m8. Seeing how to thread the bottom spool wouldve helped me too but that might just be a me thing. Either way I'm this much closer now thanks
So helpful! I have my nana's Kenmore 54 but we replaced the tensioner with one that looks like this! Now I just need to get my feed dogs fixed! (I think)
Ok, what specifically do you want me to show you. I’ll show you anything you want and that I know how to do. Thanks for watching my videos, and please subscribe.
@@ThomasShue Hi, well I just oiled my machine and it doesn't want to sew. It sews a couple of stitches and then it stops and when I press the peddle it makes a sound but won't keep going. Have to manually do it and then when I turn it, it sort of skips a stitch. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks.
@@heidijsalgado I am sure you have figured problem by now but for others it sounds like belts may be slipping or loose. Sometimes oil has gotten on the belt, clean it off.
Hi, will you be so kind to tell how does the bottom hole works.? I have a kenmore ultra stitch 12 , and something to make them , but I don’t know how to do it. Thanks so much
I’ll donate for a remake of this video or pay for a session to help set this thing up. My mom taught home economics for 20 years and I never learned how to actually set up a machine.
Do you have a video on the way this tension is put together. I took mine off to clean and it just popped off in many pieces. I would love to see how it goes back together. Thank you.
I chuckle when I hear this is an old machine.. I have my moms 1947 Kenmore and I sew on a 1947 Singer (cast Iron) I love it. I like this machine because of the zig zag feature. I have a question. I found that the machine was not always zig zagging I would have a straight stitch here and there. I was working with a moderate knit fabric. I read the manual and starting messing with the pressure dial at the top of the machine, it didn't help. I packed the machine away and made a note to self "change the needle" could that be the reason I don't get a good zig zag. I would also love to see a youtube on using the buttonhole feature.
Thomas, I thought that I was to start by feeding the thread around the top disk before feeding that gator mouth guide that directs it down ward into the tension disk. Since it kept coming out, I wrapped it all the way around and then crossed the line on the top wheel/ disk. Is that little wheel/ disk ONLY for bobbin winding?

Wow, I was having trouble with the tension. I tightened the bobbin and voila! it’s working. I bought this older very heavy Kenmore that is clean and supposedly worked. Indeed it does sew beautifully. Thank-you so much!
Thanks so much! Just pulled out my mom's Kenmore and had no idea how do this. :)
Well done. I have and use one of those old Kenmore sewing machines circa 1968. You explained threading the machine correctly.
Thank you so much!!! 😭😭😭 I have been struggling and trying to figure out my moms old machine and I have been having such a hard time finding videos for this similar machine. (I can’t find the manual online either!) Now I can finally start to figure it all out. VERY APPRECIATED!!
Thank you so much! This is one of the more complicated threading I've seen on a machine, so glad you made this tutorial!
This was great, thanks! I was missing one step and your demo showed me exactly how to get it done.👍
Oh WOW - been doing it wrong, NO WONDER I couldn’t get it right- many thanks!!!!
Thank you so much Thomas, I have struggled all morning but now I think I have it right
Thank you so very much and God bless you! I'm learning to sew with my grandmother's Kenmore Ultra-Stitch 6 and this really helped me out. Now I'm going to try and sew a pillow...hopefully the bobbing thread won't get messed up, that intimidates me at the moment. Thanks again for your super helpful video!
Thats fantastic that I could help you. Please subscribe as it really helps me
Thank you so much!!! I have been going crazy all day, I had set the top tension very high already and there were still loops forming at the bottom... Turns out I had made the mistake at the tension disk that you point out here! My stitches are looking much better now! Thank you!! (I have a different machine, Primera FY 811, but it threads just like the one you show)
Thanks so much! Just picked this machine up at Goodwill for $1! Thought I'd give it a try, and after watching your video, it works perfectly!!
Thanks for the video. I just bought one of these at a thrift store and I would've never got that tricky part.
Please subscribe, it helps me and cost nothing
Thank you for this, I’ve been putting off setting up my machine for so long. This tutorial got me up and running
I think now I know how to thread thanks to you, now.. what’s next 😳
Thanks for this video sir!!
Thank you 🙏🏿 for threading it. I have been wrong all these years 😮
I learned to sew on a Kenmore 1756, and have never had a problem threading any machine without a manual, ever. Must be because I learned to engage that tension spring with attention.
Gr8 video/explanation! Love my Kenmore 158.13450!
so that is the problem i had.
Look no where else for better help. He is IT! The clearest.
Thank you so much for this! I have been struggling with tension and this is definitely my error. Thank you!
Killer video explanation, much appreciation from Adam in Vancouver ✌️✌️
Thank you!! I was so frustrated 😂 great video
Please subscribe, it helps a lot,
Best explanation ever!!!!!
Thank you so so so much
Thank you I still have the problem with the tension not sure what to do I have the 158.18023 model but I really appreciate you going over the proper way to top thread
Yep, that's it on that tensioner. You're correct, these machines show you how to thread them. I just wasn't sure about this tensioning disc. I didn't want to pull it all the way forward
Awesome thanks you for that video. I see so many doing this wrong and I needed a refresher.
this was a FANTASTIC demo thanks m8. Seeing how to thread the bottom spool wouldve helped me too but that might just be a me thing. Either way I'm this much closer now thanks
Thank you for the breakdown and thank you for the video and your hard work
Thanks, it helped a lot! I had 4 places where l got it wrong, even with the manual!
Please subscribe. It costs nothing and it supports me and new videos to be made.
So helpful! I have my nana's Kenmore 54 but we replaced the tensioner with one that looks like this! Now I just need to get my feed dogs fixed! (I think)

I hope you do more videos on this. I've had my machine for years and would love more tips on using it since it is an older model. Thanks.
Thanks.
@@ThomasShue oh and specifically what should I be oiling on the machine?
@@heidijsalgado I am sure you have figured problem by now but for others it sounds like belts may be slipping or loose. Sometimes oil has gotten on the belt, clean it off.
Hi, will you be so kind to tell how does the bottom hole works.? I have a kenmore ultra stitch 12 , and something to make them , but I don’t know how to do it. Thanks so much
Thanks a lot, ive been threading mine wrong!
I’m gonna rewatch your tension video that may be it; THANKS THOMAS ILL LET YALL know if I get stuff going. but first breakfast 🥞 🍳 🥓
Thank youuuuuu. I just bought the 158 17810 and it wasn't thread it correctly, now I know.
I’ll donate for a remake of this video or pay for a session to help set this thing up. My mom taught home economics for 20 years and I never learned how to actually set up a machine.
Send me your email and Ill reach out personally and help you
Thank you! I could not figure this out.
No problem at all. Please subscribe it makes a HUGE difference and cost nothing

Wow Helped me immensely! Thank You 😊
Can you make a video on the bobbin and how to take it all out and place it back in
Thank you so much for this information. It was very helpful. Much appreciated. 7:07 March 8/2024.
You’re most welcome. 🙏. If you could be so kind as to subscribe to my channel. Thanks, Tom
I need more info on the bobbin part of my kennmore ultra stitch machine please!
Clear explanation, loved it. Some manicures are getting old, just the facts please.
Dude! you rock. Thank you!!!
Thomas,
I thought that I was to start by feeding the thread around the top disk before feeding that gator mouth guide that directs it down ward into the tension disk. Since it kept coming out, I wrapped it all the way around and then crossed the line on the top wheel/ disk. Is that little wheel/ disk ONLY for bobbin winding?
oh, thank you. Can you teach the use of speed and (more of the ) tension knob too?
Thank you came from another video!!
Please subscribe, it cost nothing and helps me so so much!
