Chinese chess has cannon (linguistically it's more correct to say it's a trebuchet). "cannon" jumps over one other piece (regardless of friendly or hostile) and captures the first piece after that. Cannon can be "fired" only vertically or horizontally, not diagonally. In movement it's the same as rook, but you can't capture other pieces like rooks.

I feel like the malfunctions should be reduced somewhat, and the raamming feature replaced with the ability to only ram one enemy before being forced to end your turn. Ramming should also then incrementally increase the chance of malfunction.

The rook can be replaced by the Su-25 Armed with Anti tank guided missile but you need to remove a pawn infront of it and 1 extra tiles infront of the pawn as a runway.. the path must be clear or it might collide when retruning to airfield for re arm
M1 Abrams does not shoot from a standstill, thats just practice gunnery. In combat stopping to shoot is a very big weakness so with their 2 plane stabaliser they can shoot at their max speed of 40mph.
But it can move and shoot like most modern battle tanks, it has a gun stabilizer. Another item that assists with this is the firing solutions computer, also standard in most modern tanks.
AFAIK, most MBTs, Abrams included, don't break down often. OTOH, throwing a track, or losing the track means it can't move for few turns or maybe even for the rest of the fight since the crew needs safe space to repair the track. An entire track weights a ton. Though, I don't think most MBTs will face breakdown that prevents them from shooting(hand crank turret drives backups still exist AFAIK) ALso, one intersting mehcanic you can incorprote with MBTs? Gun overpressure, like, it ain't safe for those adjacent to both the tank and its line of fire which can make tactical complications. For one, it means you can rekt alot of enemy oppositions or face the dileema of casualties to friendlies.
This a really cool concept! I'm a chess player myself and was trying to find ways to make the game more interesting. Also, in the first game, instead of moving the tank up, you should have pushed the pawn to make a discovered attack that would kill knight pawn and rook along that diagonal. 😉
