- It's Godzilla week and I finally caught up on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters the Apple TV+. MonsterVerse series Here is what I thought on the first 4 episodes.
PREMISE WIKIPEDIA
Following the epic battle between Godzilla and the MUTOs that leveled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, two siblings, following in their father's footsteps, uncover their family's connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw, taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga - spanning three generations - reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.

I tried watching it. The first episode was good but dam, the mc and her cheating father are soooo unlikable. 😂 And I don't care abt the stupid broken romance.
fucking same dude, the mc is a complete bitch.
Anybody saying they’re enjoying this show is either lying or not actually watching the show.
There are no monsters, and the posters/ads that feature Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell as if they’re the main characters are a lie… they’re barely in the show.
Should be focusing on the Wyatt Russell, Anders Holm Trio with flash forwards to Kurt Russell.
You can watch every movie in the world without getting tired😂😂
What fun is that though.
that's his job
@@kenny8712 I am pretty sure he does it though because he wants too.
I'm on Episode 5, and the only character I care about is Kurt Russel (and his son playing him in the flashback scenes.) No one else who is recurring is very interesting.
If Godzilla was Thanksgiving, Godzilla Minus One and Monarch Legacy of Monsters is the Turkey and Ham & Godzilla X Kong is going to be the Pumpkin Pie a delicious Dessert after 2 great meals 😋
I realy like it. Haven’t seen Minus One yet, but as far as Monsterverse content go, I think this film has the best characters and most world-building of the franchise so far. I also love the vintage 50s stuff, and the dynamic of the group is interesting. I hope it stays this good. Not great, but still better than I expected.
This is the first TV show in a while that feels like a full TV show. Not 8 or 6 episodes, but a full season of content coming…
I find it funny that everyone says this, meanwhile I that watch anime and some of them get like 20 episode seasons adapting longer portions of their respective mangas, I just can’t find myself relating 😂
Let’s say it’s the first Hollywood blockbuster Series that does this in a while there are many smaller series
This show sucks. It's a bunch a whiny rich kids crying about their personal issues and no monster action whatsoever
Godzilla Minus One is a movie for The Boys!
I really dig it! Love the dual Russells!
Glad to hear it!
Haven’t seen it, but did watch Minus One. Absolutely loved it, and it may have surpassed Shin for my favorite Godzilla flick. It’s definitely ending up high on my 2023 movies list. If I’m being honest, monsterverse doesn’t call to me as much as the Toho Godzilla films… so I dunno if I’ll be watching this show anytime soon given I’m already watching and reading enough stuff as it is…
Honestly I’m a simple man give me more Godzilla stuff even if it’s good or bad as long as my boy has his time to shine and I’m sold but I agree I think Godzilla minus one was the best one by far and probably has the best human characters in a Godzilla movie can’t remember any human characters in a Godzilla movie I cared for except for maybe the original one and the best Godzilla movie since Shin Godzilla and that movie was really good as well
@@denimschaffer9439 I respect that 👍
@denimschaffer9439 I'd say The Original, Godzilla 2014, Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One are the gold standard for Godzilla, I'll take any Godzilla product that isn't butchered like the anime trilogy
I`ve really enjoyed this show so far. Kurt`s awesome as usual. Nice effects, interesting other monsters. Well done Apple tv.
Great review! This series is exactly what the Monsterverse needs! Totally agree about the first 2 episodes being slow, it definitely picks up in the last couple episodes. I feel like they will start building up to a big monster fight with Godzilla in the finale!
No No No...... This show is crap
@@josephkool8411 Episode 5 let me down. Everything else is great!
Just watched the first three episodes and I'm really digging it. I actually like that is is a bit of a slow burn. It is a prequel and sequel to Kong Skull Island and Godzilla 2014 respectively, and you can really feel that in the tone. The last two movies were starting to get a bit more cartoony (and some really goofy shots in the new trailer for G x K), but this series goes back to the vibe of the first two movies and those are definitely my favorite in this universe. So I'm really pleased with it so far and curious to see where it will go to!
Mei is thoroughly unlikable. She is throwing a tantrum every 15 minutes about something or another. I find myself hoping something truly unfortunate happens to her during every episode.
I love the mix between Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell
I love that you are taking a break from the trash Disney plus Marvel shows and watching something different. I love Godzilla movies and I can’t wait to get into this show. It’s nice to see variety.
I haven’t really changed anything or taken a break. I mean I’ve always reviewed and discussed other shows.
But tv tends to be niche. So if you didn’t watch the show you might not have seen it.
Was so excited for the series but it feels like a low budget letdown , definitely CW vibes.. just my opinion so far 🤷🏾♂️
They should’ve named it “Legacy of Randa” cuz there’s barely any freaking monsters like sheeeeeeesh. But you tweaking cuz the 3rd 4th and 5th episodes been BOOTY
I like the series, but I wasn’t a fan of episode 4….the first 3 are quite epic though.
My biggest grioe with the show is the constant cutting between 2 timelines, and, during episode 4, playing the whole "hallucination" thing.
Like they're literally my 2 most hated tropes in modern day tv and movies, just give me the stuff in the past first, then give me the stuff in the modern day
@@The_winds_of_change I don’t mind the cutting between the two stories. It’s the dream sequences that are terrible. And the past do scenes in episode four weren’t interesting like the previous 3.
dude, i didnt spoiled a single thing, thank u so much, im about to watch right now, great work
Finished episode 4 last night. I don’t care about any of these characters but Kurt. I’ll keep watching because I love monsters but this is even more of a painful watch after seeing Minus One this week. What could have been….
I agree.
Not enough monster screen time.
I think the character of May is the monster. Totally unlikeable !
Excellent Breakdown on all 4 episodes You crushed it again
I feel kind of bad this show can’t compete with minus one.
Minus One is a high bar for this to achieve.
Minus one ain’t allat
Monarch has been a lot of fun, but man older Shaw (as well as Tim) are really carrying the 2015 story hard, I'm having a hard time caring for the other 2015 main characters (Ep. 4 really didn't need that big chunk of story surrounding the art show imo; I much rather would have had the "suspense" of the story be delayed by more of the older Monarch storyline). Whereas the older timeline characters all have kept my attention and I find them very interesting (Shaw, Randa, Keiko).
The worst character imo is Kiersey Clemons, followed by Ren Watabe Anna Sawai Unfortunately they seem to be the core cast. Kurt and Wyatt Russel are absolutely fantastic and really carrying the show. The rest of the cast is pretty good too, to be honest. Really those core 3 are bringing the show down hard.
@@user-tz5uq2bt1sAgreed. They'd better get their shit together in season 2
We want more Godzilla !! The other monsters aren’t what we want. I definitely love the show minus episode 4
Have really enjoyed this show more than I thought I would.
Checked it out and had a nice little binge watching! Thank you!
I’ve been waiting for you to review this
Review sounds like you're trying to convince yourself that this show is worth watching.
Couple of my friends recommended this and it does seem quite good.
Episode 4 was sooooo bad!!! SMH. Took a plunge! I loved the first three episodes though
This show is BORING
while i definitely understand and even agree with some of the criticisms, i think that despite them, the show is already great. and moreover, it’s been great since the first episode. i dig the interweaving storylines and timelines. i think it’s been pretty masterfully made. the leads are a bit weak and linger on melodrama too much
i think they marketed godzilla a bit too much, but “monarch: legacy of monsters” is in no way a godzilla show. i don’t expect to see him, but rather the organization and its characters and the monsters (many more than just godzilla) they follow. the show is really working for me. favorite thing on television right now
the show simmers and never boils.
and on the other hand we have apple tv series monarch legacy of monsters which has nothing to do with godzilla not even with monsters its just 2 kids with same father trying to find their mysteries anime character dad
I mean... I felt like this review was a little more positive than what the series deserves to get currently. This series should have just focused on the timeline of the past, its what makes sense and then finish it in the more recent times... maybe. Keiko in the first episodes should not have any business acting that way. In a society like Japan in those times, you have no business in acting like a feminist even if you are tough that doesn't make sense its not accurate. Episode 5 went hard again with the woke things we kinda expect from Hollywood these days... and I'm pretty sure they will keep going with these messages untill the end It really dissapointed me that they just had to kill a bit of the immersion with that one, this is a fictional reality but its too focused on reality, kinda paradoxical but thats just hollywood these days, they cant make things outside reality anymore.
Like I said it kinda disappointed me, I felt like I was in the honeymoon phase in episode 1 and 2 maybe 3... but then... 4 and 5 kinda killed the idea for me. The female protagonist, I like how she has PTSD and that the world shows context clues that we are living in a world where big monsters exist. But she is so annoying in the beggining and spiteful you cant really relate that well with her, or make her likeable unfortunatly. The only likeable character so far are the Male protagonist's Mom and Colonel Shaw, past and present versions I think, maybe randa in the past I kinda like him as well because he is playing the role I can kinda see culminating in Kong Skull Island... Like I said this show should have just focused on the past with Randa, Keiko and Shaw, and rethinking how Keiko should act considering the context, everything else should be fine. I guess it would be costly because I assume these guys would be jumping from different places and adding new monsters as they go along the budget would need to be a bit bigger for that to be possible. Still I have to say the show was a lot more interesting in the past flashbacks than the present. Also they still like to ridicule the white guy huh? The one who rolls with the french lady. He seems cool... why is he that type of character no one takes seriously? Come on I can already see these things and honestly I hope Im not the only one. Oh and the token black girl is the hacker? Nothing wrong with that but of course they had to make her a major character that dated an Asian man... things just dont feel really like... real? If you are making stuff based on reality at least make something that feels like its real...
Anyway hope it makes sense and not leave room for misinterpretations and I get my point across in a civilized way.
Nah youre not the only one. Im suffering through episode 5 right now, absolutely fucking hating our daughter mc rn for she's such a fucking bitch (which is crazy when she's the LGBTQ representative). Also that bit when she says "dont believe everything you see on the news" when it comes to FUCKING GODZILLA AND A MUTO IN HAWAII DUKING IT OUT AND BEING ALL OVER THE NEWS. Like... I get youre not trying to scare the kids but they shouldnt be at school anyways with this sort of crisis going on so big whoopie fucking do. The son is pretty cool, I like him, but his relationship with nerd girl is ass and not interesting at all. I love both Lee's, ones I looked forward to the most so far.
I have watched the first 3 episodes. All i could think about was why all those characters were serious, like everyone is just sad and fuckin moaning about one thing or the other. And i dislike the May character. She looks like she’s at this constant state of crying and she kinda looks like Tessa Thompson. The show didn’t do it for me until Kurt Russel showed up.
I think the show is getting worse with each episode. The leads come off as annoying at times with some sketchy dialogue. I enjoyed the time jumps and the links back to Godzilla 2014. Hopefully it gets better...
I really like this show so far
Overall, I'm enjoying the show. I cannot stand the character May though.... she is just so toxic and annoying.
As a whole, I currently have a love/hate relationship with Apple TV shows... "For All Mankind" has been one of my favorite shows of the last few years but "Invasion" has to be THE worst show ever put to screen. I really hope Monarch ends well and doesn't end up disappointing.
Monarch is the least interesting part of the Monsterverse. Havnt watched the show yet. Do we even see any monsters during the show?
You should definitely try Apples series Silo. Little different than what I think you would normally gravitate to, but I'd love to know your thoughts and opinions!
I really liked Silo. Be interesting to see where they go with it. Trying out the Apple tv on the free trial and so far so good . For all Mankind is also good telly.
Its just bunch of kids yapping and less monsters show getting boring 🥱
This show is cheeks bruh. 7 episodes and maybe just maybe we’ve eclipsed :30 seconds of Titan screen time.
I hope I like the other episodes better than the first.
The flashback scenes interest me a lot more than the present day ones. I have no interest in the present day characters beside Lee Shaw
Very interested in this show now! And I’m not even the biggest Godzilla fan! Do you plan on doing a reaction video to the fallout Amazon series teaser and have played any of the games?
Its starting to be soap bopy, like Is the mixedwomen gonna get back with the guy or is she gonna start dating the guys sister
I’m really liking this show honestly I’m really looking forward to each episode having me wanting to know more and where it’s going
watched 6 episodes and i rate it 4/10. good start but then the characters started to become annoying and the progression was very slow. the writing is the show is the worst
if you watch the end of the intro, after episode 3 the writers started changing
Monarch a family problem
The kid actors are the worst thing about this show. Their stories suck yes their dad is important. But their back story's don't do anything. It's not good
Hey Sean, just wondering if there was anychance we could get a review to the Fallout Trailer that dropped earlier
or just trying to milk it...who doesnt love money...whoooo
I know this is a random question and politics aside . Will you review the movie “Lady Ballers”? I get it , it’s controversial. I’m not talking about bringing our political views into anything, but it is a film. I’m sure it is terrible ( it looks like a “straight to DVD film of the early 2000s) but it is a film regardless. I know most move reviewers won’t touch it or review it. Curious if you were . Thanks! Keep up the great content as always !
What’s there to say about it. You’ve either been brainwashed by the Dailywire into believing anything anti “woke” is good or you realize it’s absolute crap.
my theory is that apple is trying to drag the show as much as possible making it so we can enjoy it longer and have greater expectations, we may have 4-5 seasons probably.and remember if this show is over its highly unlikely that a there will be more movies..or series
just my opinion..just saying
Godzilla fans are eating great right now
I think it’s boring asf 🤷🏼♂️ 40 seconds of monsters in 5 episodes.
Hey Sean, I asked this question in your last shorts, but you didn’t reply, who do you think is a celebrity (actor, musician, any celebrity) that is unfairly or harshly hated?
Ep. 4 was so bad it might win the « worst episode of the year » award …
Go watch Secret Invasion where every episode was the worst episode of the year.
@@mugen9147 I’ve watched it and let me tell you … you’re 100% right ! No way Monarch can beat that …
What an absolute s#%+ show. Kurt Russell’s been relegated to the background and even he and his son can’t save this show. It’s sad to see that the producers sacrifice what the audience wants in actual MONSTERS for the sake of identity politics, DEI and wokeness.
sadly, thats hollywood today... thank god for Japanese cinema tho.
The director of the first two episodes of Monarch directed all 9 episodes of WandaVision and will direct Fantastic Four
Thanks for the info, makes sense. Hard pass
@@abrahamfigz6585 He's also directed 43 episodes of It's Always Sunny. So, you never know the full picture of someone's filmography

4. Deadpool 3
5. Dune: Part Two
6. Joker: Folie à Deux
7. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

16. Kung Fu Panda 4
17. Sonic the Hedgehog 3
18. The Garfield Movie
19. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley
20. Bad Boys 4
21. Twisters
I never got into The Last Airbender, so I didn't list it and never saw Daredevil when it was on Netflix or the Ben Affleck one, so Daredevil: Born Again isn't on my radar. Penguin, Venom 3, Madame Web, Echo, Mean Girls, Kraven the Hunter, The Skeleton Crew, and Alien: Romulus doesn't interest me either. I'll check them out if the reviews are good.
My Top 5 Favorites From 2023
1. Loki S2 (not as good as S1 but still love it!)
2. Air
3. BlackBerry
4. Oppenheimer
5. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Take note, I haven't seen Poor Things and The Holdovers yet. They both have high scores on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb. Heck, I haven't even seen Napoleon yet. Then I read Disney doesn't want to release The Bikeriders. I did see Killers of the Flower Moon and Priscilla on the same day. While I think they're both good films, neither one would make my top 5 favorites of this year.
Maybe it's a NY bias, but Killers of the Flower Moon is regarded the best film of 2023 according to the New York Times and The New Yorker? I think the movie is well made but I actually prefer Oppenheimer more and I'm a bigger Scorsese fan than Nolan fan. I wouldn't be mad if Flower Moon won Best Pic but I rank it between the 10-12 range among my Scorsese favorites. Still better than Gangs of New York. Cameron Diaz was a complete miscast for that film.
I enjoyed Gen V and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon but I wouldn't put either of them in my top 10 of this year. I haven't been into TWD since 2016 which is why the spinoff show with Rick and Michonne next year doesn't interest me. Gen V is CW The Boys meets Saved By The Bell: The College Years. Some good stuff but I still prefer the flagship series. Most spinoffs are extra dressing we don't need or never asked for. If they did a spinoff to Stranger Things and Cobra Kai, I probably wouldn't watch it. I'll watch Agatha because I always liked Kathryn Hahn.
*Godzilla* *Minus* *One*
There's a great chance if I see Godzilla Minus One, it will make my top 5 for 2023. But since it's a foreign film with subtitles, I probably wouldn't put it above Loki S2 and Air since I tend to listen to my movies and shows at home while I surf the web. I'm such a huge Michael Jordan fan and Loki fan. I would love it if -1 shocks the Oscars and wins Best Pic. I've read it's like a Godzilla film if it was directed by Steven Spielberg.
Godzilla Minus One
Rotten Tomatoes: 96%
IMDb: 8.4 (went up from 7.9)
All the highest grossing Godzilla movies are the American ones. The highest grossing for a Japanese Godzilla movie is Shin Godzilla in 2016 at $78M worldwide. The 1998 Zilla still made more at $379M. Minus One should cross $100M easily with it's shoestring budget of $15M. I think it will cross $200M. Not bad for a foreign film with subtitles.
They say Godzilla is the oldest running movie franchise. That's not true. King Kong is older by 21 years. The difference is Kong doesn't have a movie every decade like Godzilla and James Bond do. Older than King Kong is Sherlock Holmes. There was a Sherlock movie back in 1914 and a minute long one back in 1900.
I would love if a Godzilla movie wins an Academy Award for Best Picture. Shock the world! Be such a boon for the Godzilla/kaiju community. First ever Japanese film to win Best Pic. Then the James Bond franchise should try to aim for one. Make a truly, truly great Bond film that can rank up there with The Godfather I and II. James Bond and Godzilla have been around 61 to 69 years. Bout damn time they start winning Oscars.
One of Jaby Koay's favorite movies is The Fall (2006)? Good taste, brother 🇵🇭. I have closer taste to Jaby over his younger brother, Greg Alba, since I'm closer to age to Jaby. The Fall is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. No CGI. Tarsem took 4 years to make that film using real locations. The scene with the elephant swimming was gorgeous. And it has such a sweet story and ending underneath all that beauty.

Still undecided which of my favorite movies and TV shows will be on my iPhone SE (2022), Google Pixel 3, and seldom used Essential PH-1 which I should revive again. I have thousands of videos uploaded on three of my Google Photos accounts.
I generally don't need to carry all my favs on my phones. Pixel 3 is probably best for Game of Thrones though. It has the best internal audio quality when using my Sony WH1000XM4 for it. I'll probably put GOT, HOT D, Andor, and The Boys on that.
Yay! I get to wear my Targaryen sigil hat from New Era again. It's the perfect hat for me. And I'll wear my black Daemon Targaryen hoodie from RedBubble. We got trailers to Furiosa, The Boys S4, and HOT D S2 in a span of 36 hours.. F yeah!
My favorite silver blonde incestuous family is back! More incest! Jaime fookin' Lannister. Yeah, Jaime was definitely fookin' a Lannister like Daemon is fookin' his niece.
The three Georges: Lucas, Martin, and Miller. All three Georges have sick minds. Lucas had Leia kissing Luke. Martin loves incest the most. Miller has bizarre shit in his Mad Max films like obese women getting milked.
Warner Bros. is coming in hot 🔥 for 2024...
House of the Dragon S2
Dune: Part Two
Joker: Folie à Deux
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
Penguin (one I'm only mildly curious about)
Alto Knights (think Goodfellas)
Beetlejuice 2
Twisters
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim
Max > Disney+
Warner Bros. >> Disney
While Warner Bros.' superhero films flopped this year (Shazam 2, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and likely Aquaman 2), they did have the highest grossing film of this year in Barbie.
Elvis, HOT D S1, and The Batman were three of my top 5 favorites from 2022. Warner Bros. is generally more consistent than Disney. Max is more worth it than Disney+. They have far better variety in genres.
The most anticipated film of 2025 will come from Warner Bros. as well: The Batman 2 🦇
Damn thats a lot of words
Did you write all of that just now?!?!?
Tldr
Not enough monsters I am so bored watching it
I stopped watching midway through episode 2. It was boring and did not care about any of these characters.
It isn't just that we aren't interested because we don't know the characters, it's also the fact that they are all so bitchy, initially, and just plain unlikeable. I had no idea what the Son saw in May, the Black teenage computer whiz living in Japan of all places -- she's surly and rude and the last person you'd want to be stuck on a deserted island with (well, her and the rest of the primary young cast). Until the 4th episode, where they show us more about who the Son really is, and how charming and personable and, I dare say, sexy, May can be. Then I'm like, OK, this makes more sense now. Just one question: Why the HECK didn't you show us this FIRST???
Not a fan .
The Monarch series is awful.
One thing that disappointed me in monarch was the LGBTQIA nonsense. There is no need to have wokeness in Godzilla.
welcome to modern hollywood, they'll plug in as much of "the message" as possible
How are you guys enjoying this show!!! My lord !!! It’s so boring guys really you really enjoying this ? Same as the movies ha it’s just human drama bulshit we are here for the monster I don’t want to watch an hour long episode of every 1 going threw there ptsd of past attacks really !!!! And then show 1 minute max of a new monster T_T yeah you guys are the reason we are getting bad tv shows nowadays
This show Must sort out it's pacing and STOP the awful flash backs with the terrible young actors,Kurt and his son playing the younger self in the acceptable flash backs holds the show together, the effects are fantastic but because the show has got 3 instantly forgettable bad young actors your left wishing better actors and script were present, this has potential but is frustrating
TERRIBLE acting...obnoxious Girl boss woke trash...but the only thing i agree with you on...The production !! absolutely wonderful with amateur actors and directors
