Hi Ben - found the following stats for 2022 entries: UTMB® 195% sold out - 4 486 applicants CCC® 301% sold out - 5728 applicants OCC 484% sold out - 5812 applicants Of course, there is a different system this year and maybe with the extra promotion that has taken place there will be more entries across all races. But many people will perhaps not have got their heads around the new rules. I have 5 stones - 2 from UTS 50 and 3 from Nice 100k (a real beast). So hoping that I have a decent enough chance to get through the lottery. Note that they also say that they do the lottery by country. So if 5% of entrants are from UK I guess we all go into a lottery between us for 5% of the places. Not sure. Good luck in Valencia - I did my first and only road marathon there in 2019. Loved it although it was a tad too warm for me. Paul Ravenscroft

Yes! I was going to say that but didn't want to add more complexity into it. But great point too AK! Does seem odd that you can now qualify by just running one 100k race.. verses before when you had to pretty much do two 100 milers to get the UTMB points.
@@benparkestheextramile Right you had to get 8 points in max 2 races yada yada. Now you just need to buy in ehhhrrr I mean run as many UTMB races as possible ;)
Only just found your 2nd channel ! Great stuff 👏 following your sub 3 mara plan for London this April and then targeting the trails with a UTMB one day..
Great video, Ben. I know a lot of people are frustrated with that new system. For me, I was doing UTS anyway, so that's fine with me. But I don't have the expenditure to travel round the globe to collect Stones. So my 2 stones from UTS 50k (should I get round) will be my only chances to enter CCC for 2024. What are your thoughts on a DNF not affecting your Index score? There were a lot of DNF's at elite and sub-elite level this year and I think they were well aware that a DNF doesn't affect their score at all, where as a "poor" finishing place or "poor" finishing time would affect their Index. For me, that system is floored.
In contrast to the previous years the actual score does nothing for elite runners anymore. They all have to qualify either by placing high in a UTMB Series Major / regular Series event or get in through the lottery. I highly doubt any athlete thinks about their UTMB Score when contemplating to pull out of a race.
One thing I can appreciate is that speed is no factor but at the same time I do appreciate that Ironman for example is performance based... i went to 70.3 worlds 2021 based on finshing position in a race which i felt was fair to auto-qualify. Maybe the combination of lottery in addition to qualifing position would be cool... for example if you show up and finish like top 10% or even top 5% of a 100k or 100m UTMB race, i feel you ought yo qualify. Meanwhile, everyone gets their chance in the lottery. Just a though
You can qualify without the lottery by placing in the top 10 at a UTMB major or top 3 at a World series event. There is also direct qualification by running a race where you achieve a high UTMB index (different for male and female).
Great video, I was wondering how this all worked. Looks like an amazing event for some time in the future if I have time. Have they said what the ballot chances are so you can know how many stones you should be realistically aiming for?
Have they scrapped the rule by which you get a guaranteed entry if you failed two years in a row in the lottery? Presumably so? My entry next year is actually my 2020 entry (which was rolled over from the cancelled year of 2020, but could be carried over to 2021, 2022 or 2023), but I only got that because I was unsuccessful in the 2018 & 2019 lotteries. Was way easier back in 2007 when they just asked if you'd done a race of over 80k or two races over 50k, and you just had to tick a box that said "yes"!
I haven't been able to find that out. I guess they might say after the 2023 race when they have more information on how this new system is working. I know western states publish that.. but their entry system seems to have been identical for many years.
@@benparkestheextramile I wonder that too. I mean in theory there have been 25 races with many finisher. But does every 100K finisher want to race the CCC next year? Dunno...
So if you run two 100k races, the best one is used for your index? What is the index exactly, is time on the index race important? I don’t fully understand the conecept.
Question im still waiting for someone to answer. - if i want to enter the 100mile utmb main race, can i do a 100km index race that has stones? Oooor must i have to do a 100mile/165km index race with stones?
so, i i cant just train for the UTMB and do it. i have to pay for races around the world to get a shot at entering. In my area there is a 50 and 100k once a year at the same time. do i can only complet one a year and my stones only last 2 years... seems like a money making scam
🔝 This will be very helpful, it is not easy to understand.. Question regarding 'stones are valid for two years'. Is it calendar year? Or 2 year before lottery? Or max 2 years before utmb workd series? Or something else? For example: when you have earned stones in march 2022, can you enter the lottery for the event in september 2023 and 2024?
@@benparkestheextramile thanks! Sounds logical too on some level. With my 2 points this year I can do the lottery for occ for 2 years. I go for 1 point in 2023 (jan-dec; does not make a difference) to also get to the lottery for the event in 2025.
Really great video by Ben but yes I thought the same, very much made it a case you have to pay more to their other races to qualify (or should I say, have the “chance” to). If they carry on making such a commercial move in time, supporters will get put off much like triathletes at the ridiculously priced Kona Ironman.
@@creativechimp03but unlike Ironman, in UTMB, you have the opportunity to reach the finals simply by completing the qualifying race(s), regardless of your finishing time. This makes UTMB a more inclusive event compared to Ironman, where hobby triathletes may never qualify for Kona.

The 'within two years' requirement is so harsh for int'l runners and leads to a very Euro-centric competition.

Is there a min value of UTMB Index to enter each race? There used to be a recommended index needed to finish the race within the time limit.
So basicly the UTMB collects the stones and the Index is by completing some races?
Thanks Ben well explained! Any idea roughly what the chances are of getting in for each stone you have?
