Love this movie! A horribly underrated and mistreated cinematic masterpiece!
"Not just 4 or 5 thrills but ..." Of course this is before the sophistication of "In a world ..." trailers. Sometimes my favorite part of going to movies with my family in the 1960s was seeing the trailers for "coming attractions."

Richard Harris was originally wanted for Commodus in this Guy was replaced by Christopher Plummer. And Christopher Plummer was originally wanted for Marcus Aurelius in Gladiator but was replaced with Richard Harris

it shocks to me to this day that this film flopped. And it's incredible that Gladiator was able to retell this story and thrive. Such a testament to how timing of release is important.
0:15 and onwards, so far as I can see they recreated the complete original "forum romanum" for this scene.

SAW THIS WHEN IT CAME OUT. LOREN WAS UNBELIEVABLY STUNNIG AND SEDUCTIVE ! FILM WAS OK.
Used to see these great old Roman films at the cinema back in the early to mid 60s.
One film still escapes me even though I remember a scene from it, I am sure it had no huge actors in it, so at a guess it was an Italian or Spanish film dubbed in English.
I guess I will never see it!

When they line those guys up at the edge of the cliff....Damn, cold blooded, but more than any words explains the success of the Roman army. I bet that really happened. They re-make "The Fall" with "Gladiator." It wins best picture. That's the story from 800 years of Rome that gets re-made. Lots and lots and lots of violence in Rome's history. In all history. I wonder how we reconcile that?
Modern royalty are where they are today because they had the most violent ancestors.
We are no better than these people, we just hide it better.

Unfortunately this historical film flopped badly when released in 1964. Plenty of fiction was infused that has nothing to do with the actual history. However grandeur of this old movie cannot be denied.
The film didn't work, but Christopher Plummer's performance as Commodus was one the best of his career.
He galvanized the screen, a really magnetic performance full of egotism, malignancy and misnathropy.
Indeed, I never understood why Christopher Plummer never became a 'Super Star' ! - Watch him in yet another great performance in "The Royal Hunt for the Sun" ! - 👍 -

unfortunately a blu-ray disc of this ilm has never been released in the U.S.. there was an all regions blu-ray disc from Europe but
it was in the wrong aspect ratio.
They need to reboot this at the right time

There would have been a lot of color in Ancient Rome, and even Ancient Greece. Not just the white lime we are so familiar with. They should make a modern remaster of this where they enhance the color of all the buildings to looks more realistic to the time period.
And mess up the photography and the color pallete of the film?
Soo i think i have to watch this movie at least four times to really comprehend it! Otherwise, i need to get this in my media collection!!!!

Im here watching and imagining the fall of merika, the traitor of the world.
How many times do they say the name Livius in this film...its as bad as Simon ides every five minutes in Ben Hur and Morning Mishal every time she fronts the Today programme . Apart from a very weak script this film is a monster of magnificence and a Rome that most tragically and dutifully fell right before our eyes.
