I think that fellow Yedidya is by far the most moderate participant. He has quite an insight in saying there needs to be a balance between the global citizen and the national border ideals. The majority of this debate is extreme on both sides and serves to divide the conversation between these ideals, rather than finding the middle ground like Yedidya. This is why having public discourse is so challenging...

That is the big fallacy of democracy, the majority is seldom right! Even though I enjoy Prof. Sandel, I stopped after 10 minutes. If one can answer basic questions like, why do Canadians not immigrate to the
USA? Why do Germans, Brits, Swedes, Swiss, and a from other EU countries immigrate? Why do Japanese, Singaporeans Australians not immigrate...in large numbers? The answer, they are better off! Why?, because their Governments do a reasonably good job. The UN and other good-for-nothing and irresponsible social organizations canvassing for liberal immigration policies have miserably failed to ask the perpetrators of crime...why are you not improving the conditions in your own country? Why are you corrupt? This is the case in entire Africa and south of the USA and almost all of the Islamic world! No...we will ask the developed countries to take the burden of these refugees and immigrants! Is the UN not giving a free hand to the dictators, the corrupt, the fascists, and the autocrats?

Let's not forget the evolution of humanity as human species from tribe to city state, to nation state and now we are struggling to move to the next stage which is world stage. And at every stage of evolution humanity had to struggle hard and fight against the enormous forces of inertia just to keep the status quo. At this stage we as human beings need to embrace universal values which go beyond our national and cultural borders WHILE AT THE SAME TIME upholding those values and principles within our local cultures which contribute to and strengthen the nobility of human beings and get rid of those which do not.

I think, when we are discussing about controlling migrations across borders, we are focussing mostly on the migrations by those in need. Be that the need of survival as a refugee or need to leave a tough life, in search of a better economic opportunity.
However, there is another strand of migration. Migration by strong and powerful to increase their area of influence. Be that large corporations, businesses or skilled labour. We have seen, migrants becoming colonisers in past. Most of the aboriginal culture and identity was lost to the "superior powers". It is necessary that national governments have the right to control this influx of migration. So that it can protect it's people, it's culture and unique identity.

Does a stranger has the right to get in without your consent?

They made a great argument of how great immigration is but they also fail to mention the negatives of immigration. Immigrants do indeed enrich an nation's culture and make it have more depth as well. Immigration can also outline the differences between people and how theses differences can draw disagreements and tension between people of an us vs them. Furthermore, immigration throughout history has almost always been bloody as tensions always end up boil to the point where things turn ugly. Lastly enrichment of a culture only occur with assimilation but otherwise you just have opposing cultures in one nation and people in their own bubbles.

To use your analogy of neighborhood (country), how long can you keep your "nice neighborhood" nice when ,due to an imbalance, your neighborhood is surrounded by the "sewer neighborhood"? The solutions as I see it, either type could destroy the other, or one make the other similar. I would like to think that the nice neighborhood (countries) do whatever it takes to make the sewer ones nice too. Otherwise, before long, you in your nice neighborhood will start to suffer from the smell of the surrounding sewer. Covid-19 is just the "tip of sewer". Either humanity would wake up and see that our neighborhood is the small planet, in the middle of nowhere, that we live on, or soon will self-destruct as a species regardless of whether you live in the nice or the sewer neighborhood!

22:45, Lena versus Yedidya. The latter says we have a formative national culture, to which Lena gives a number of reductions to absurdity (t-shirts, etc.) which miss and move away from the point. Then she reveals (as if it was not obviously implied) her bias by referring to her own national history, thereby proving his point that our culture and its history defines us and our attitudes. Then Ayham performs a brief and irritating "sæva indignatio", on the basis of his-not our-sympathy for those in the refugee camps-again, principally because of his identification with those whose culture and nationality he shares.

Erasing borders is equivalent to erasing common language, culture, values, traditions and history...this all inevitably ends up erasing unity and therefore wealth. Rich countries are that due to historical decisions and the values of the people within...and the continuation of those values and traditions. Poor countries have had leaders that have made bad decisions that were for personal interest not national. The idea of emptying out poor countries into rich countries and that not having an affect on the wealth and culture of those rich countries and also not make the poor countries poorer is ludicrous. Consider that some cities within a nation are wealthier than others. Why? Because of the choices of the leaders and citizens of that city. Whether national or municipal, borders matter. Our cultures, traditions, languages and values are what bonds us and give us reason. Humanity has always been tribal by nature.

That borders matter doesn't mean they should be closed. Borders mark out jurisdictions, and jurisdictions are important to democratic rule. However, I do not think jurisdictions are sealed entities. Just as a town is jurisdictionally separate from another town but they nonetheless allow people to move in between, countries are jurisdictionally separate from one another, but they should allow people to move in between. I do not think it is a matter of giving anything to foreigners, it's to let them pursue their life goals. And if they do not succeed, that's okay, life is not always easy. But at least they should have the chance.

There is chaos with borders being in place - if there was no national borders - on many levels it would be problematic- economically - overcrowded- health care to name a few
If there is a rule in place, it’s there for good reasons usually- it’s serving a purpose-
Australia America uk - they have taken their fair quota of immigrants refugees -
Underdeveloped countries are rising and soon catching up to the developed countries -
If that’s the case - the numbers in refugee may decline -
Should national borders matter - it’s a good question- delicate one, perhaps-
Don’t take umbrage to my response it’s only my humble opinion

National identity and cultural heritage would perish if they are not useful. So does geographical borders. Immigrants are welcome if they are resources the host country needs, which is the general practice around the world. Refugees would go to places where they are accepted. The society and its government have to face the consequences of their attitudes and decisions taking into accounts aside from philosophical and moral considerations, like sovereignty, cost and benefits, domestic and international politics, etc..

We are humans first black or white does not matter. it is due to many nature castrophies. Nation and religion become cause of killing innocent life. National borders and patriotism is agenda of politicians and few selfish evils with inhuman charateristics. Global citizen will not cease local citizen. If someone feel that he or she can adjust with people from particular cultures and mental state, why that person is not free to consider planet as his home. I also feel that it's hard for me to adjust with narrow minded cultured people. Muslim culture supress weaker and have very illogical thinking about life so I cannot adjust with them so it should be my freedom not to mix with them. We are individuals so its not necessary that all are able to adjust even with their own culture. We might be unaware of our own culture due to many reasons. It's all personal.
