Saint Petersburg's Gilded Church of Blood and Potatoes

- The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood is one of the most colorful and ornate landmarks in all of Europe. Located in the middle of Saint Petersburg, Russia, the church has been a memorial, a morgue and even a storage facility for vegetables. Known for the colorful onion-shaped domes that dot the city's skyline, the church was erected on the spot of Emperor Alexander II's assassination in 1881. Inside, colorful mosaics, Italian marble and precious stones decorate the walls and ceilings. During World War II, the church was used as a temporary morgue and after the war it was used for vegetable storage-earning it the nickname "Savior of Potatoes."

I live in the city os St. Peterburg and for me it will akways be one of the most beautiful citys in the world. Its a mix of european and classic russian architecture with many interesting churches and museums. If you visit, it will definitely be worth your time and money.

Russian architecture always confuses me, I always think it looks like something from india. Both beautiful though.
Nathan I always thought it was cool how subtle differences between the two styles are able to differentiate the two. Two very different cultures built things so similar yet different. Makes me wonder if the two crossed in the past.

the label "on spilled blood" means the church is built over a location where a tsar was killed (I don't remember if it's only for a tsar or if it can apply for the death of other royalty). There is another church "on spilled blood" that's in Ekaterinburg and is built on the site where the last tsar, Nicholas II, and his family were executed by the Bolsheviks in 1918.

yeah but religion shouldn't really be based off of who has the better churches, who has the most believers, etc. It's all about who's ideology is more valid which is one of the reasons why Christianity and it's sects aren't really as successful as it was back then and why a lot of people are leaving their beliefs and becoming atheists. They're not making any valid arguments against each other (Catholics, Orthos, Protestants) which make people vy away from them.
There is more variety of architecture though in Catholic church/cathedrals - Byzantine style is also a part of the Catholic Church architecture but yes, there are some magnificent examples of church architecture within Russian Orthodoxy. There is also a variety of crosses within the Catholic Church
I like how Orthodox churches are full covered by paintings and icons. It's so unique and beautiful. But for me, Catholic churches are the best of the bests, lol. Maybe because it's more spread geographically so there are many architectural influences. But it's all up to you which Christianity you think best, and we should unite because we all believe in Jesus Christ as our God so we shouldn't argue which Christianity is best.
