One thing I did when I was in a similar situation after paying bills and putting money in savings, I'd buy a $5 to $20 gift card for my local grocery store and Amazon each pay period and set them aside. When I needed/wanted something and funds were low, I'd use the gift cards instead of the credit cards. It let me pay down the debt and build up my savings.

I went through FPU years ago, a few years after I became a widow. It was so helpful and I paid off a fair amount in a much shorter time than I thought it would take.
I cancelled three CC's but kept one. An annoyance to my FPU mentor, for sure! I use it and always know the balance. I keep the cash in my bank account and pay it off every month. I get a whole 1% in points and am not at all interested in getting another card that would "pay" me more. I use my CC as a budgeting tool, not for points.
I would also NEVER recommend anyone do what I do! It takes work and a lot of financial discipline which I'm good with. About 3 yrs short of bs7 and can hardly wait!

I've seen many people fall back into debt, and it is very similar to when you lose weight too fast and end up getting it back. Knowing you were able to get out of debt before is a double-edged sword in many cases, because you tend to think if you were able to do it before, you can do it again. And that is true for most of the people who were actually able to get out of debt, but its not a healthy relationship with money, in the same way people losing weight sometimes end up with an unhealthy relationship with food.

This is such a good point. To give my experience, I have never had consumer debt except for a car loan that I paid off and had the car for 15 years. However I was disorganized wasted/loss money. So my savings did not increase the way it should have because I did not pay attention to my spending. But once I heard that Mint was going away, I started using spreadsheets and formulas to track my spending. This has been a game changer. Expense tracking helps me to be intentional with my spending, and to understand my cash flow in semi-real time. I try to use credit cards for my spending as much as possible for a few reasons. The key is that I view the credit card like a debit card, I track every dollar and I pay it off each month. This has changed my whole relationship with money.

The credit card game takes focus. Essentially you have to treat cashack cards like debit cards. Pay it off before the due date and keep your utilization ideally under 10% on each card. Keep a list of your cards and assign each a purpose if you have more than one. Grocery and gas are common categories. If you don't jet around the world you do not need a point card or any card with an annual fee and perks you can't use or convert to cash to help pay down your balances. Good luck!

I buckled down and paid off all my credit cards and bought my used car with cash ($11K) all in 1 year. I lived with my mom to save on rent during this time. It was not fun particularly being in my 20s watching my friends traveling, shopping etc. But when I sent the last credit card payment, I felt financial freedom something I had not experienced in a long time. The easiest way to pay off your debt is pay the minimum on the highest balance loans and pay off the lowest bill 1st. Repeat that for each bill and you can't go wrong. I put together a spreadsheet on my desktop, which made it super easy to manage. Once you reach your goal and start to save, let your money work itself. Make sure you have a wide portfolio and don't buy things that you can't afford...good luck to you.

I felt it deeply when you said you had to walk away and regroup and just talk to God and say “God I Trust You.” I was in tears because I know in this journey there can be a lot of shame and frustration. Having a hight credit score is great, but most people don’t know that banks also look at your debt to income ratio. I’ve work for a financial institution for years, and the majority of people I came across have no idea that If your debt to income is above a 50%, you won’t qualify for a loan even though you have a decent credit score

I’ve been following you for almost two years and THIS video reminds me of why I do-your honesty and transparency about how your debt started is very familiar to me and relatable. I started with a $500 credit card in college and it spiraled down from there. I was able to purchase my first home this summer but I still have personal loans, three credit cards and a car loan on top of it. Never feel embarrassed or sad about your situation. The fact that you are hitting the hammer at it now rather than later is a good thing. Your “besties” are on this journey with you. We are all on the same road…just in different cars.

I don’t want to not pay the bills or file bankruptcy and ruin my credit. How it’s it possible when I barely have $300 to last a month after paying bills and the minimum on credit cards. We can’t survive on $300 so we keep using the credit cards it’s never ending.

Keep your focus on paying them off and keep track of balances and payments. Work either a debt snowball... smallest balance to largest, or list and monthly pay based on interest rate. Snowball gives you a more immediate charge but both work. You can do it!

My suggestion is instead of a monthly credit score. Move that to quarterly but on the monthly portion you should use to keep track of your net worth? Which I think would be a lot more helpful and motivating. When you see from month to month, your negative net balance # is going lower. Which is a good thing!

I use credit cards for everything to get the cash back. I keep an updated apple notes balance with interest rate highest to lowest and balance. I cross it off after it’s paid and if I use the card. I add it back. Then I add my installment loans from highest interest to lowest interest. This simple method has helped me a ton. Then I schedule all payments before my paycheck hits. 😊

So for ex just say a year and half or maybe 2 years you plan to have the debt paid off. It might take less time but at least you won’t feel overwhelmed and can reward yourself if you hit it sooner then plan. That has help me with my debt journey and for me to keep going and not give up.

A lot of people in high consumer debt hide in shame. But we are all human, not superheroes. Nobody is perfect.
There are some “gurus” online bragging about how they have a lot stashed in savings/investments but not revealing their true credit card debt, their huge student loan payments, their huge car payments, their underwater mortgage, their high rent etc.
That first story you told about the credit card debt was so relatable. I had cards maxed out and go into collections my 20’s and 30’s too. But I use my two cards responsibly now - in my 40’s.
Not enough people talk about how bad credit is a prison and how it can adversely affect your life.
I applaud you! 👏🏽 Great video!

I'm starting my debt free journey too and also documenting it on my channel. Not only for full transparency because it's such a taboo subject but also to keep myself accountable. I found this video during my research and I am subscribing considering we are on the same journey. It's nice to see others being so open about it ❤ wishing you full financial freedom in the near future, it's a tough world out there 😅

Thanks for being so vulnerable and transparent! You’re helping so many others by sharing your journey 🙏🏿.
    Few quick thoughts:
    1. Super smart to build up an emergency fund before you dive into the debt plan!
    2. Closing the Capital One card may conflict with your goal of increasing your credit score - since it will lower available credit and presumably avg account age. Assuming it has no membership fee, why don’t you just lock it?
    3. Not sure if your personal taxes are federal or state, but I’d recommend you push those further up on the list as the interest rate of them can be astronomical
    4. Once you pay off the debts, perhaps you should consider building a solid savings and expense allocation - as opposed to a home decor fund- so that you can break what seems to be a cycle and prevent yourself from having to overextend yourself for (presumably) non-essential items.
Wishing you well on this journey! I’ll be tuned-in❤

Thank you so much for your transparency. This is sooo needed. It's so important to realize it's not all a happily ever after ending. Discipline and a Plan are soooo important. Love this and so proud of you for attacking the debt again 💕

Keep your head up, love. Aim to payoff this debt in one year. After that you’ll be golden!!! Rooting for you.

Leveraging the credit for the points only works if you set a spend limit and pay the balance in full every month. My Amazon Card got me hemmed up like that too! So I had to remove it from my Amazon account and remove from my Apple Pay

I thought I was the only one. This is a reality for quite some people. But this goal that will be obtained. With a different mindset, discipline and focus. I am determined to be the lender and not the borrower🙏🏽🙏🏽

I had a 770’earlier this year. Used up my emergency fund and kept having catastrophic things happen. Now is 40,000 dollars of debt and still no emergency fund. Down to a 640🥲

I really appreciate your honesty in how you got into and out of debt several times! Like life happens and it is hard to make ends meet sometimes!!!! Credit cards give you a false sense of security that you have money that you don’t! I have been in and out of credit card debt all my life and I am trying to keep myself honest and not spend money I don’t have!😢
