The way the music starts as David asks “What am I supposed to do?” and the camera pans out showing all the comics in Elijah’s gallery, only right after for Elijah to tell him it *won’t* be like a comic book. God, what a beautiful film.
The shot is framed between the two pillars as well making it look like a comic panel, when he is saying "real life doesn;t fit into boxes" the camera moves forward revealing the bigger picture
Isn’t it crazy how the scariest things in life are the most realistic things that could happen. That janitor forcing his way into that man’s home and terrorizing that family is 1 million times scarier than Thanos snapping his fingers.
Soon as we hear the line "Real life doesn't fit into little boxes that were drawn for it," the visual focus changes from the pillars, to the open crowd of people. Great visual direction.
If you notice 1- Most people are wearing clothes with dull colors. dull colors mean ordinary people that are just here for eating, drinking, sleeping and having fun. 2- Evil people are all wearing bright colors: they are popular and easily recognizable 3- In the minute 2:56 it shows a group of athletic people wearing bright hats. they are popular but they are not the real heroes that we should look up for. they are mostly living for themselves except few. 4- The real hero is wearing normal clothes. real heroes don't know that they are heroes until they are tested. Heroes are ordinary people who made themselves extraordinary.
You're missing the point of the bright colors. It has nothing to do with popularity. Instead, think of the framework of the story - it is a comic story, but transferred into real life. Comics use bright colors, primary and secondary colors, to portray their story, especially back in the golden and silver age. The criminals are David's gateway from the normal world to becoming a hero in a comic book mold. Real life doesn't fit into boxes, and so David must seek out the potential participants in his comic story.
I was looking for this comment and just to add if anyone remembers the scene where a woman and a kid walk past him and we hear the kids screams the woman was wearing red. Kevin and his mum. Also I love how the bad guys in bright clothing also blend in easily with the others that wouldn't guess at what they've done. This film was brilliantly written and directed
I love this scene, it’s the realisation of David knowing he’s surrounded by crooked, corrupt people everywhere, not just the football stadium he limited his abilities too. He knows how many people need stopped, and slowly realises it has to be him.
This is how a superhero truly begins. Where people are; afraid of crossing into the unknown and embracing the impossible because they are the impossible.
It's the equivalent of Batman suiting up, Spiderman swinging for the first time, or Superman flying out of the Fortress of Solitude Crossing the threshold of the mundane into the realm of the "superhero"
We praise the story...and we should. But the music, the colors, the lighting, the angle of shots...all create a visceral reaction. This scene is a clinic in creating a deep emotional response.
0:42 "It's alright to be afraid David" damn that hits hard for some reason Also I love how all the people in bright colours stand out and normal people are dull. It’s a brilliant way to tell the audience where the real threats are.
There's movies like Joker or The Dark Knight which feign gritty realism and then this movie which despite having superpowered aspects still can disturb you by showing real life and what terrible people do. Shyamalan may of let his ego take hold, but this movie is fantastically deep.
3:55 I love David's reaction in this moment. He went out there expecting to run into a chance to prove (mostly to himself) that he is a true superhero... but he still didn't truly expect to run into a straight up serial killer. Hell, even if he half expected it he still is repulsed and shocked by the Orange Man. He really does care for people and hates those who prey on the innocent. Super or not, that right there is a good quality for any hero.
@@franciscohcoronado4947 its his reactions the tears that well up in his eyes after seeing these events like that family and when he saw what Elijah had done that made me wonder if David can feel their emotions at that time it would explain his utter horror and disgust.
@@preciousotoakhia9789 the orange man was holding a family hostage and had already killed the dad. I don't think David was shocked more horrified by what he saw
In film school, this film was often referred to as one of the best-shot movies of all time. Consider that it’s 35mm anamorphic, not digital, and long before the proliferation of digital color grading and image manipulation. They had to be so much more intentional with the art direction of their color work here, and it’s so specific and adds so much
This was my favorite childhood movie. David reminded me so much of my dad. A hero. I watched it again last night and I was crying the entire time because I subconsciously built my life around this concept and didn't even know it. As an adult I also picked up on the pacing if the movie. The long moments, the acting, everything felt it was in slow motion. Then, during the climax, even though the moment if it was isolated.. wasnt very action packed.. but in its context, it felt like it was the most intense and dramatic thing I've ever seen in my life. That moment shaped me. I was never much of a fighter like my dad. But whenever a situation needed it, when something bad was happening.. I used that exact same head lock. No matter what the person did, how much they hit and bit, i couldnt feel it. I just knew they needed to stop what they were doing and i wouldnt let go until they did. (This was in self defense or to protect someone) It blew my mind seeing the connection as to why I used that to stop hatred. A movie i watched as a kid had shown me that. When David touches people, and sees their evil, I wondered what he would see if he touched me. That changed me... even last night. Even if no one knew what you've done, or even if there was chance someone saw, would you be okay with your choices? This will always be my favorite movie..
This scene is so poetic and visually striking with motifs. It tells a lot in short scenes and the soundtrack is so haunting. This is a mark of true genius director making best use of soundtrack. Bruce nailed the scene.
One thing I did not notice until watching this film for the 4th time, is that as soon as he finishes seeing the vision of the immoral act, time goes from standing still to speeding up to catch up before he is out of the trance, meaning that a big limitation of his telepathic power is that he has to revisit the vision and watch it play out in real time in his head; it isn't an instantaneous thing. An interesting "weakness" to the admittedly OP technique.
i can't tell you guys, how i like his poncho!!! his style in that movie is just AMAZING!!!!! i swear, i would pay any price for that poncho!!! i've been searching for it for so long, but it's sold everywhere, haha. Greatest movie of all time though.
i really like the use of color in the scene, bright colors representing the evil doers- women in red, man in green, man in orange and the muted colorless background with the innocent people in dull colors.
This is scene is truly amazing. What really stands out for me is 3:09 when David backs away and the fear/disgust he shows. Just try to imagine how terrifying it is to be surrounded and exposed to multiple forms of human evil. Also the symbolism is interesting. The colors representing their "sins" greed, wraith, lust, and envy.
Wow.. I love this scene. This is basically saying this is real life and real evil humans do to others for subjective reasons. This isn't a comic book philosophy class anymore. This is the real world. And it's here that David and Elijah find their place and reason.

There are some great comments here. I'd like to contribute that every "villian" in these visions is distinguished by the bright colors they wear- their "costumes", if you will.
I wonder if the orange man was used by glass? It would make sense since he talked about villains using henchmen and he did orchestrate three mass murders.
This is terrifying because the intruder just enters in broad daylight in a suburban neighborhood with people around. M. Night also did this well with the opening abduction scene of Split.
