I absolutely enjoy vids like this, as I do it for a hobby (repair 12v amplifiers) and those fiberglass scratch pens are wonderful and pretty much a necessity when repairing electronics as well as 99% isopropyl alcohol. I suggest a better tip and heat temperature for the iron, shouldn't struggle or have issues removing components from a board. If you do then you know you're doing something wrong. Anyways I enjoyed and keep uploading!! THANKS!
Don't know why....never have had issues with my antique hakko 936. I bought an extra heating element for back up, don't really think I'll be needing it lol.
THANK YOU FOR THE TIP!! :-) I am going tomorrow to pickup my first pinball machine for my collection. It is a Bally/Midway Truck Stop. It has that same type of battery in fact it may be the same type of board in your vid. Thanks to all your videos I went to look at the unit today and the first thing I look at was the battery to make sure it didn't leak and lucky it didn't leak all over the board. So this todd tip will come in handle because I will be changing that battery out as soon as I have the chance.
Very informative video. I would very much like to see more videos like this one. Perhaps details on how you rebuild a power supply board or how to repaint areas of the cabinet and playfield.
We are always making new videos...so we will probably cover this again. We HAVE shown several repainting playfield videos...including Harlem Globetrotters and Jacks to Open in earlier videos.
I still favour traditional lead based solder. The non lead ones seem to use quite noxious fluxes to make the stuff stick, and it's debatable whether those are safer than the weaker flux fumes from lead solder. The RoHS (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) regulations apply mainly to mass production environments and not the service industry. My own favourite solder used to be the lead/tin and silver version. It flowed beautifully and produced spectacularly clean and shiny joints.
To prevent data loss, when it is time to change batteries, wiuld you turn the machine on and then change the battery? How long does the button cell last?
So depending on what pin I have the replacement will vary correct? Some won't require modifying the resistor right? I did end up buying that Dakar btw, it's in great condition and super fun to play. I may be doing a video of it once I get it in place and settled.
Two thumbs up guys. Is there a time limit, before things start to lose memory? If TNT are going to go more videos such as Todd's Tips, could I suggest a generic of how to clean up dirty artwork, then maybe Mylar removal?
Great Vid. I've yet to do this. I've stuck to the remote battery holders with connectors on the wires if someone needed to take the board off. I've also only worked on Williams games where the battery wasn't recharged. I don't think Frank was too concerned with the solder smoke. No biggie. How much LEADED solder do you think Steve Kordek breathed in back in the day when he worked at Genco? And he lived to be a 100.
Thank you for this video! I haven't done any battery mods myself, but I think I might have overlooked running the ground..... heh. So! What is the spray that Frank is using from the can?
The original battery is a 3.6V bank of 3x1.2V NiMH is it not ? so is there any reason why it shouldn't be replaced directly with a 3.7V Li-ion battery ? or will that produce a Johnny moment ?
Todd..you need to fix the Hakko Desoldering staition for Frank!!!! That's a great older Hakko worth fixing!!!! Those solder suckers are lousy & can suck up the traces..Get that unit fixed for him!!!!
You can see how the lead free solder is eating away at the tip on the soldering iron. Since it was already wired for a rechargeable 3.6V battery, why not put in a AA size LiFePO4 rechargeable battery and a battery holder for it? You can get those at Target and Rat Shack.
I don't get it..what's the purpose of the foil strip?? Why didn't you just connect the battery holder to the old pos and neg connections?? And if you use a rechargeable button cell you won't need to mess with the diode right??
You remove all remnants of the old holder as there may be latent acid from the rechargeable cell. The lithium removes Amy chance of future leakage. We have had people replace the old cell with another one that eventually leak and then forget and twenty years later a ruined board because they "forgot"!
that needs to be specifically Franks Tips. and whats the gun he's using to shoot holes? the mostly blue thingy gizmo :P could use him finding out why my brothers Asus Monitor went bad. problem is we have no clue what a fuse looks like when there isn't one. O_O I'm guessing it's one of two items. course naturally we cut two of the cables connecting the video card to the monitor (oops) so probably have to part that out now. anyone up for a decent 24 inch Asus 1080p lcd screen? I personally think the psu went bad. locating the non standard fuse though youtube time. asus monitors smh
Ted Bundy well that helps it just looks like Frank aims with such precision it looks like it puts a hole in the board.. I look at Asus monitors and I look at normal tvs. overpriced!! and you don't get the smart in the smart tv's..
Live to 100, Todd! Good tips for everyone in this video. Thanks for sharing, Frank!
Cary Hardy I am certainly going to try!
Todd`s Tips are the best . Others just ramble on and on,We all know who they are...
SuperKissFan1 Thanks! Glad you like them! You have to edit to keep them moving!
Nice to watch someone who really knows their stuff, well done Frank!

jeanious2009 Glad you like the video...we have Hakko and Pace stations, but Frank prefers the single iron.

That's because Todd insists on buying Chinese dollar store soldering tips!
Thanks Todd & Frank, nice videos ! Watching u from France !
Thank you!
Nice job Frank, I think you deserve a raise!!!
Wayne Moore Actually, everyone got one on the first of the year!
Very informative! Thanks Frank! (thanks cameraman Todd too)
Paul M Yes...the role was reversed!!
Thanks Frank, and Mr T, great tip!

Christopher Marrero Great! Glad I could help!
Great explanatory video. Thanks.
Greg Condon Thanks Greg!
nice video! This is a very useful tech tip as well as a demonstration and excellent explanation.
MONOGONBANDVIDEOS Thanks for the reply!
Thanks for the tip on the resistor/ diode swap (at 6:40) when replacing a nicad battery
mylobesarethrobbing Glad it helped you out!!

TNT Amusements Inc I'll take a look at those. Thanks.

Yes.
Great info! Thanks Todd!
YourMKArcadeSource Thanks!
Love your vids! yall help with so much free knowledge! PRECIATE IT!!!
Drill Frank drill. Good work Frank I saw soldering like that when I repaired stuff.
Lyle Johnson My Frank and his drill!
TNT Amusements Inc I would love to see oil spurting up where Frank drilled..

+Retro Game Players yes...you have to have a diode in the line
What did you spray on the foil at 3:52 ?
That is Contact Cleaner.
Two thumbs up guys. Is there a time limit, before things start to lose memory?

gallimead All it takes is TIME!! :-)
I've waited 4 years!!!.
I'm doing something similar on my Rowe jukebox. Does not seems like I have to worry about the charging aspect in my case, yes?
This was awesome! We need more TODD'S TIP'S videos! Any chance you can do a monitor re-capping video?
xga303 There are quite a few up here on RUclips already! Will cover other stuff when we can.
What battery did you use for the replacement?
2032 battery, which is on Franks Battery Board...we sell them on our website store!
@@tntamusementscool, just ordered one!
@@tntamusements when are they going to ship out? I ordered it a few days ago?
Thank you for doing videos like this it is a lot of help.
Any chance you can do one on testing components like transistors, diodes, etc.
nick nicholas Yes...it is planned at some point.
frank is king

Then back to leaded solder it is!! :-)
Such INSOLENCE by the crew!! hahaha!!
indyracingnut Those horrible BOYS!
Thank you for this video! I haven't done any battery mods myself, but I think I might have overlooked running the ground..... heh.
So! What is the spray that Frank is using from the can?
Looks like contact cleaner.
Over the years doing onsite on equipment I have come across a few button batteries leaking. Though this is much better then what was on the board.
+Lithonion1 The lithium can leak a tiny bit we have found...but never enough to do damage.
The original battery is a 3.6V bank of 3x1.2V NiMH is it not ?

Dan Keller Everyone loves Hakko! It works, but Frank perfers the single iron

stonent because the rechargeable battery can leak

@@tntamusements..I'll be dead in 20 years..maybe sooner if Biden gets us into WWIII 😂
I've Installed it with a 1N4004 diode and i can still measure 3V at the battery terminal.
Read the voltage on BOTH SIDES of the diode...you will see a difference and this proves the diode is working
@@tntamusements Yes, on the board side i've got 5V.
So the 3V isn't really there?
With power OFF, take the measurements.
I think frank needs a BIG HUG!!! Hahahaa
Brent Watier AHhhh! My Franklin!

this is not gun, it is a "De-soldering Pump Tool" if you just don't want to say solder sucker ;)
Lee Bartholomew Ausu is the FUTURE of monitors! (NOT!)
Ted Bundy
