    ABOUT KEPPIE
Hi I'm Keppie! I'm a professional songwriter, and songwriting teacher. I've been teaching song and lyric writing for over 10 years now for some of the best contemporary music colleges in the world- Berklee Online, the Sydney Conservatorium of Music's Open Academy, as well as for the Australian College of the Arts. At other times, I've taught for the Australian Institute of Music, as well as the LA School of Songwriting.
My goal is to help people write better songs! My experience in the classroom, with thousands of students at this point (many going on to find careers and success in music), is that your songwriting, like all things, can get better with meaningful, deliberate practice. My intention is to share the skills, knowledge, information, and ideas that I've gathered with anyone who wants to improve their songwriting.

I worked with TORS on my latest single, and I cannot wait to work with them again on my next project. Their professionalism is unparalleled, they are in constant communication, and really strive to serve the song and Artist to their best ability. I had so much fun working with them, and honestly can't believe how quickly they were able to bring life to my track.
If you're even thinking about working with Joe and the TORS team, don't hesitate!! You will NOT be disappointed!

Love TORS! My experience at TORS was the best - just recently released an album (well last year in May but still promoting it lol) and they helped produce 60% of the album. This was my first time doing this and they really helped bring my ideas to life, at an affordable rate. They also helped me advertise my first single with such an impactful ad. TORS has given me the tools and confidence to keep writing more songs. Joe was great in guiding me through the process and all the instruments I’d need. Then helped place me with some great producers. All in all a great experience! Go TORS!!

Incredible value for money. And what I really liked was the body language of the players -- they seemed to really get into the groove and enjoy playing the song (hell, I would too, it's a corker!). That Englishman, Danny Beck, seemed totally invested in the project. So impressed with the real human touch all round; and at just something over a grand in Australian money. Amazing.

I recorded a song with TORS and I enthusiastically recommend it! Setting up the process with Joe was streamlined and professional. Dan “Barracuda” was the producer. I am recording with TORS and so far it is an amazing experience and result, extremely fast, efficient, creative, professional team, common sense and warm attitude, support, great musicians and a talented producer Dan Barracuda that I am working with. You send your demo, have a conversation about your expectations and they respectfully take your song to a professional sound, unless you ask for the assessment and they offer additional guidance. It is not a problem at all to handle the process online, they are well connected and organized through video calls, emails etc. Totally recommended, friends 😊💛

Hi Keppie! (Hello hello after a while. It’s been busy.) I’ve known Joe for a couple of years now and have worked with a couple of TORS (Online Recording Studio) producers!! ☺️ I can confirm that they are a great team and they match artists with producers well - all my self releases are under them. Haven’t worked with Danny but I’ve heard good things about him. Nice to see different areas of my world meet! 😆
So for those who want to get their songs produced, I highly recommend TORS. They do all genres of music and can transform a simple vocal over piano/guitar to full band/electronic/etc! (Produced demos are nice to have, but not essential, for them.) I have learnt a significant bit on rewriting songs too with songs to make the production feel like it’s meant for the song working with TORS, just like what you said in the video! Happy to hear you have nothing but good things to say about them!!

As a songwriter this opens a whole new world of choices!! Love how the demo developed into something great !! For me, seeing as i'm not a guitarist & a fairly amateur keyboard player, i use the latest versions of "Band In A Box" which has real instrument samples played by session musicians!! The only downfall here is you do need a producer to guide you - to get the best out of your song. But this was a GREAT video. Thanks!!

I am just thinking about what basic information of the song these guys need to into make a choice for the right producer, musicians etc. Your song sounds really really good. Nothing can beat the sound of real musicians who are capable of playing their instrument. Have to say that I also love a combination of real instruments and electronics 😀 Thanks for taking this new approach in music production. Kind regards from Berlin.

    The song sounds great!
I'm a bit concerned that with all that work on Danny's part AND paying out musicians, it only came to $800 USD, that Danny is not really getting payed fairly for his skill and talent - unless Danny spent less than 10 hours total. It's also pretty likely that the Online Recording Studio company took a cut, further reducing Danny's pay.
I'm not criticising y'all - and I'm glad you tried this out and got such great results.
Just, as a producer/engineer/musician, I'm concerned about the Uber/AirBnB-ification of producing music.
I'm very much in favour of keeping things affordable for indy songwriters and musicians. I'm also a fan of people getting paid a living wage, and not encouraging a race to the bottom, pay-wise.
Thanks for the great videos and tips!

    • @theonlinerecordingstudio
      @theonlinerecordingstudio 21 день назад +4

@seanflora Great to hear that you like the song, Sean! We totally hear you and your concerns about a race to the bottom are completely valid. We totally agree.
Sites like Fiverr and SoundBetter, where producers/creatives have to bid for jobs, whilst also having to pay to bid for those jobs, encourage a race to the bottom as creatives are made to compete with everyone else on the platform. This often means that talented producers end up having to do a lot more for a lot less in order to build up their profiles, get consistent work, and ensure that they are not undercut by other users. Plus, they have to spend a large chunk of their time trying to get new work, rather than being able to focus on the bit that they do best and enjoy the most - actually making great music!
At TORS, we solve these problems. Producers have set rates for their projects, so never need to negotiate on their pay or drop their rates to secure their projects with us. We also ensure that they have a consistent flow of new artist projects to work on and we handle all the administration around those tracks. This means that producers have consistent work at their set rates, without having to worry about finding new clients, handling administration, spending money to pitch for jobs, or needing to race to the bottom.
We want to make sure that music production is sustainable for both artists and producers for years to come!
      🎸

I understand this... And I love the song btw!... Sounds great!... I thought this was gonna be an AI thing.
But if there are young songwriters out there with $800 and no recording facilities, even very basic.... Get that first!.... of which $800 would cover. The learning experience of making demo's is kinda valuable if god forbid.... your dreams actually come true, and you become a recording artist. ;).

They used their own vox though, that kinda suggests they expect people engaging with the service to have access to decent recording facilities. Also she does acknowledge the price at the end of the video as being a lot but less than alternatives.

I’d say that with TORS (working with them - I’m a happy customer for years who happen to also subscribe to this channel), you only need a decent mic and a good enough room. Their producers are well-equipped in making your vocals sound good. It obviously won’t be a top-end recording since you need a mic that is at least a couple of thousand dollars for that, but it is good for the price and the people listening won’t care unless they compare your song to a major label one! For starters, something like a Rhode NT1 is good enough.

@daysleeper3910 Glad you like the song. You're absolutely right that artists without any equipment should focus on getting at least a basic home recording setup as a first priority. Working on demos and experimenting with recording is a valuable experience for any songwriter. The issue I have with this video is that it's not clear whether it's a paid advert or not. Nothing wrong if it is, but it's not clear and in my mind that's a big prerequisite to a video like this which looks like a big advert. Other than that - nice song and great channel as usual.

Hey there! A totally valid query! We weren't paid to make the video - TORS offered to produce a track of ours for free to allow us to test out the service. We have a strict policy of only ever promoting or presenting a product or service that we ourselves would use, or is of genuine value and service to our community. Because we went through the process, and loved the outcome, we decided to release the video (and the song)! We earn a small commission on the first booking that anyone makes through the link we've provided. Hope that clarifies!

$800 is still too expensive for most, and honestly, it wasn't that much better than getting a few buddies into a garage with a Zoom 8 track. If it's a good song, you can make it work with a vocal and guitar or piano. Put your money in a cookie jar for that vintage Martin.

If Danny and his collaborators really put as much work into this as suggested here, and it cost you a total of $800, the math simply isn’t mathing. This can’t possibly be a viable business model for them. Which, frankly, makes me pretty suspicious that you got an amazing deal that they would never be able to replicate for any job that wasn’t specifically a PR exercise for them. $800 wouldn’t even cover the session musicians.

Hey @fromchomleystreet - it's absolutely a valid question to raise and great to see that it still matters to people that artists should be paid fairly for their work!
For context, TORS has been running for nearly 8 years and we've had the pleasure of Danny being one of our producers for 4. Based on the volume of projects that we are working on at any one time, we ensure that everything is sustainable for everyone involved. It's about balancing affordability for independent artists with ensuring that the creatives from TORS are being properly paid for the work they are doing.
If you are interested in finding out more about how we work, we'd love to chat! Please feel free to book some time using the link in the video description and we will look forward to speaking with you.

Am I to understand from this video that it's normal for the final recording to not include any of you actually playing any of the instruments? That its normal for "songwriting" to be only vocals and some chords and other musicians write and play every thing else? For example the piano and bass and drums are all created and played by someone else?
I've learned a lot about songwriting from this channel, but it seems weird to me, idk

    • @theonlinerecordingstudio
      @theonlinerecordingstudio 7 дней назад

Great question! It's actually very typical for songwriters to not play instruments on their tracks. Many songwriters also play an instrument so will play on their songs but there are loads of excellent songwriters who just focus on lyrics - sometimes not even the chords/melodies. We're here to help songwriters with whatever they need!

When we use real musicians in London (or elsewhere, remotely), are the musicians then entitled to royalties based on where and how often the final recorded performance is played? Is there a U.K.-valid contract we sign before starting to work with TORS? If so, are there any conflicts between their contract document(s) and U.S.A. laws?

There is nothing amazing, unique, special, or new about this. It’s a marketing trick. You’re hiring a producer/etc., and musicians, etc. i.e. whatever…. You making a video making it out to be anything other than I stated is a joke.
