  • The 1920's and 30's are considered by many to be the Golden Age of railroads in America. From Art Deco streamliners to the incredible travel times, it was truly the last hurrah for the railroads. The GG1, F-7, Hudson's, and Streamliners were particular icons of this era. Going into the late 50's, plane and car travel had become the preferred travel method, and luxury passenger trains faded away into history.

Since it was a "one off" experiment, I was surprised to see M-497 in that video.

I believe my thought process was that M-497 was one of, if not the, last locomotive in the US to have an “Art Deco”/streamlined look. It would be very poetic for the New York Central to be the first and last railroad to streamline a locomotive.

@TrainMaster26 I can agree with that. The interesting thing is that it was returned to stock configuration and used for some years before being scrapped. That was a shame because it's record should have earned it preservation.

@TrainMaster26 Yeah, I can see that since the high-speed streamlining of M-497.strongly resembles that of the Pioneer Zephyr.

Thanks for watching! Is this type of video something you all would want to see again? It’s definitely a lot quicker to make than most of my other videos. For this I tried making a video that would be seen in the 60s or 70s, hence the 4:8 aspect ratio.
The next part in this retrospective series is out! This time its about the modernization of railroads in the 80s and 90s! ruclips.net/video/N0WDIQZCeEc/видео.html

Thumbs up for a wonderful video! I can't get enough of videos and books of passenger trains in that era which was before my time!

2:40 was that the northeast corridor? If so, it’s a sight to see 4 trains racing each other, as well as Steam under the wires! That would NEVER happen today

I assume so, since there are gg1s, definitely a once in a lifetime event

At 2:44 is that a jet engine train?

Yep! It was a crazy experiment by the New York Central where they attached two former WWII fighter jet engines to the top of a budd RDC car to see how fast it could go, it still holds the land speed record for rail I believe at over 170 mph. Here’s an article if you want to learn more about it, I’ve actually considered making a video on it at some point in the future

Hello Train Master 26 I was wondering if some time you would like to do a collaboration on a video, as a young railfan myself I think we would make a good team, Message me if you are interested
