It's interesting, when you've listened to enough John Mayer interviews you can hear how he weaves his metaphors back into his songs. The last verse in particular- "Two trees" and the "rocket ride" match things he's said in interviews, it seems he is looking past his fame to a future where this is all behind him and he's found someone to share his stories with.
In the song Belief there are the lines "Like punching underwater / You never can hit who you're trying for." He says something very similar in the Any Given Thursday dvd features.

This song kinda reminds me of buckets of rain by Bob Dylan and considering John has covered that one before I’m sure he took some inspiration from that one!
