Looks awesome! But ...
1)I would've added rack rails. I've only had my desk for a year and changed the gear a dozen times. It's always evolving!
2) I would've seperated it into at least 3 pieces: left/right (with legs providing additional storage space in 19" drawers) and center, all detacheable in case you have to move one day - and oh boy, you will!
3) I would've added at least two cable channels beneath the meters, one for power, one for audio, the bigger, the better.
For a few days I've been playing with the idea of building a desk 5 sections wide. You've answered A LOT of questions for me. Thanks for sharing!

Solid wood is not idea for acoustics. Its resonates the sound waves that causes distortion which is why MDF is the standard in high end studio furniture.
You probably will, but Please show us the wiring!
You got DB25s, XLRs, 1/4” TRS & TS, I think some RCAs on that old DBX, balanced, unbalanced, -10dBv, +4dBu.
Ya got USB, maybe Thunderbolt and FireWire.
Then there’s Power, from way too many Furmans, built in IEC, wall warts, line warts, 12vdc, 5vdc, maybe some power conditioning and UPSs.
After all that, how did you setup the signal flow? I see patchbays. Normalling?
Then.....Calibration!
I’m exhausted just thinking and typing out all the considerations.

Ha ha yes I will definitely show the wiring and the signal flow. Now that everything is on top of the desk, I also feel like it’s easier for me to show the different ways that you can use the set up. Currently I’m using this in three different ways and I will have videos in the future showing how it’s done

great job ! I f I make one like this one day, I would make the armrest "padded" with foam, and the pc keyboard + mouse on a tray underneath the desk. Otherwise, it looks perfect !

I would have done steel vertical rack sections front and back as well as removable side covers instead of legs. Would give additional room for equipment and much more support in the end

It's worth the money if you buy an Argosy Console desk because the build quality and engineering that goes into their designs is unmatched. They were the original creator of the Console Enclosure desks first introduced in 1994 for the Mackie 8 Bus mixer.
why didn't you use rack rails? Now everytime you switch or rearrange your gearyou have to screw into the desk, actually destroying it over time.
Having rack rails would have made it absolutely perfect. I was a bit disappointed to see that he has to use wood screws to secure his equipment. Of course, he has to use this... not us.
Transporting that desk be very difficult. Argosy Console practically invented the large format console encloser desks in the early 90s that was made for the Mackie 8 Bus Mixer. They engineered their console desks to be broken down entirely to transport with IKEA styled cam locks. Can't do with with DIY builds unless you have skills to create IKEA styled cam lock which most carpenters don't.

This is an awesome design. I'm going to use your idea and make it a bit smaller for mine, but with the same principles. Thanks for documenting this. Just a couple of questions. You used 2 1x's sandwiched together to form the rack rails. Why not just use a 2x6 (which has the same width as two 1x's) which would seem to be a lot stronger? Same with the long 1x8 in the back? Why not just go with a 2x8 for a stronger piece instead of 2 1x8s?

Yeah the Allen Heath was a great mixer to start with but the SSL X-Desk is a giant upgrade in quality. Also because I almost never record anymore, I really wasn’t using the other half of the mixer and I was really looking to upgrade quality more than anything

Nice design looks great, but does your head really end up in the bolt area with your room size.
I specifically built the studio around the studio desk with this exact design, angle, and size. The sweet spot for listening and the room acoustics are my most important things I care about. Gear means nothing If you can’t hear it properly. Check out my studio build series where I go into crazy detail over 18 videos showing how the studio was built, soundproofed, most importantly acoustically treated for the specific space

I thought the perfect speaker placement is in an equilateral triangle with your mix position, surely that can't be true for both near-field sets seeing as they look to be next to each other
You are correct but usually people have one pair as their normal mixing near-field and then the other near-field is used just as a reference. Having them right next to each other means that the triangle only changes by a few inches as well... so just leaning back in your chair verses leaning forward on the table will play a bigger role than that slight change in speaker placement

A materials list would have been helpful. I'm trying to build a desk for my SSL Nucleus to rest in. I want to move my racks into the desk. Also need space (whether on desk or positioned on stands in the right places) for PMC monitors, Auratone cubes, and NS-10 pair. Also, 32" main editing monitor and 2x typical sized monitors (idk the exact size off-hand). We're also not the same height so my ears aren't at the same height, so my measurements need to be a little different but this is a good base design for what I need to build and going through it counting boards is a slow process with a lot of room for error.

I have to confess you remind me of things like I have done with my home studio. Some things I have done is built in wall rack units, custom legs for an Allen Heath Desk I got about 8 months ago, which were originally the legs I had made for a 48 input fully modular inline D&R Orion Console. (I modified the Orion legs to work with the A&H Desk). I am pretty sure I am going to buy the PreSonus StudioLive 32S Series III desk so now I am going to have to figure a way to have them both in my studio as I am running out of room and looking to have a hybrid studio.

I didn’t build the two front main speakers, I did build the speakers that are mounted into the wall. Unfortunately I never filmed through that process so unless I was going to build a new pair, there won’t be any video on that

I got them from Etsy, but they are also available on eBay and Amazon. You can buy these legs in all different sizes, thickness and materials!

@@thetylerbaxley yeah I custom-made the entire desk that the old mixing console sat on which included those legs. That entire desk including the armrest, meter bridge, was all custom built by me as well. I just meant that I took them off of the original mixing console desk and used them for this new desk

So you take the length of the room and at 1/3 of the room is perfect sitting location? And then basically a triangle with the speakers to the listener
Yes, that’s a great start point. Try and use the golden rule math when determining speaker placement from front and side walls.
Yeah the 1/3 is a great place to start so you can figure out the best listening position. From there, I wouldn’t say it’s ever a perfect triangle. Based on the dimensions of the room and how you are placing your speakers, this can be slightly different. If you don’t use room correction software or some sort of frequency analyzer, I would definitely say that helps out a lot with where to put speakers
