Im super impressed with your encouragement with Noah’s self help skills. A tip for teaching signs is finding a motivator and giving a small amount so get more requests in one sitting. So for instance if he enjoys goldfish crackers, (this would be good to teach a two word request ‘more cracker’ or new word ‘cracker’). Give him 1-5 crackers per request. If you have to prompt hand over hand give 1, prompt by showing him and telling him give 2, prompt just by tell him 3 and independent sign 4, if he pairs it with words 5. It give the motivation to be more independent but also shows an understanding that they are learning. Motivators are the biggest tool in teaching communication. A child will learn this skill has a benefit to them and they will want to work for it
I am watching these videos to feel better about my 2.5 year old. I subscribed because I really don’t know what to do. I am glad that you have documented this journey.
I have a two year old non verbal autistic son, been working with him. He's so smart but has issues communicating. I don't know how you do it! You're an inspiration. I've been trying to teach him how to sign
With our 2 boys we used theses videos called "Signing Time with Alex and Leah" they loved the songs and would look forward to watching them daily. They learned quickly from watching them. 👍😁
My 21 month old knows quite a few signs and has a few words now. We started signing to him before a year and just did them when talking, he slowly picked up on them over time. Food signs came first, as I think those are the easiest to grasp. "Help" is a really good one! It took a long time for that one to stick as it's a bit more abstract, but it helped decrease frustration as he now signs "help" rather than shrieking! I would suggest just learn lots of new signs yourself and go about your day and use them when interacting with him, eventually he'll catch on!
signing is a great way to communicate in many difficult situations. Great job lil guy.. yes, I seen you... I taught several of the children that had communication difficulty. my grandparents on father's side were both deaf... so it was just the norm. for myself... I still will show my grandchildren signing.. even tho there's no barrier .. yall are Awesome. . love you guys ...
Stephanie, sign language is my 2nd language - I was brought up oral ,reading lips.. A Child that grows up with sign usually starts talkin ( signing) at 4 months. You can start with Liam too. Bottle, thank you, please, Mom, Dad, help are good ones also to start with. There are several really good apps and free, that will be a big help. Asl dictionary is a good one, The joy of signing. They also have flash cards a bit costly though. Daniel could learn sign for fall back job of being interpreter as well. She would need training and a license ( now required - I think.)
My daughter is 4 and she says very few words. She started school and speech therapy a few months ago and I can tell that is making a difference. Also my son said maybe 5 words until he was 3 and the last 2 years he has just blossomed with communication. Hugs and prayers ❤️
He looks like he's doing great so far! A little help goes a long way for him to communicate better with all of you guys. If you find that he's not learning certain signs, something I learned in my aba masters course was called prompting. You can physically put his hands together to make the sign you want, while saying the word for it. Eventually you won't have to do it. You can say the word "eat" while motioning and eventually he will do it himself :)
I loved baby signing time DVDs! I know he isn't a tiny baby but the songs are catchy, the videos are colorful, and we checked them out from the public library.
Glad to see lex is getting some sign language. We started teaching my grandson signs when he was 15/16 months old and had an apparent speech delay. Suggest you use the sign whenever you use the related word. He wants to communicate and giving him the tools will help everyone!
Alexander is such a cutie! Actually all of your children are gorgeous. You and your husband are so blessed. Good luck with the sign language. See you in the next video! 😍♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Lex learned very fast :) at 11:38 he shows the sign "more" . I think he was not sure whether he likes it at first but then you can see he doesn't give the fork so easily away (you had to pull it from his hand)
Decided to copy and paste the comment for others to see. Have a great day! This is a really fascinating video. The parents are really working hard to help their two-year-old to be able to communicate. By giving him sign language to communicate, they will be helping with their son's self-esteem. The parents show a lot of patience in this video. Thank you for sharing it with us. ( i am taking early education classes and shared the video for an online discussion board this was the response from the teacher .)
We had a similar experience to what you described with him having a couple words once, with our 20 month old who was just diagnosed with ASD. She's said "bubble" and "help" one time each and then nothing. But it's similar to how our older daughter did language at the same age (she had like five two word phrases when she was diagnosed at three and a half like "come on" and "good girl" that they think were delayed echolalia). I love this post though and the timing is perfect! We're just starting to figure out if signs or PECS are going to work and I'm leaning towards teaching her (or trying to teach her) signs no matter what they decide at ABA because if we can get it to work it would be great for her telling us stuff immediately at home. And I think the three signs you picked are the perfect three to start with (we always started with "more" with all our kids too because it's just so useful even for kids who have swords to have).
A great video series that I believe is on Netflix or you can definitely order them off amazon is the sighing time videos. We did that with my niece and nephew from the time they were babies and they loved the videos they are super cute and teach very basic sighs. If you have any questions about sign language I was studying to be a sigh language interpreter but I got married and now pregnant so school has gone on the back burner for a while. But I would be happy to help any way i can I love sign language I think it is a beautiful language and super easy to learn and fun too. I think it’s awesome you are teaching lex sign language it will definitely open up a whole new world for him.
I taught my toddler to sign because we had friends in the deaf community. I never had formal lessons. We just used the signs for things as they came up. To help you remember tape the signs on objects etc. One of my deaf friends had two small hearing children who knew how to sign. Things they really want they learn the signs fast like cookie. LOL
Tommy is the exact same way with eating utensils. It's slower for him top eat with utensils so he would rather shovel it in. 😂😂😂 Noah lecturing Lex about his cute face. I swear that kid is amazing.
Our vocational high school has adult education classes. One of the classes they offer is ASL. You should check to see if any of the high school/voed schools in your area offer classes in ASL.
My 2 year old has similar behaviors as Lex, he started to talk which he is delayed in speech. He is currently getting speech sessions which are helping greatly. But he does learns words and starts to say them and then out of no where he just won’t say the word. Like he would say “what” all the time then he stopped saying it for like a whole month and he just started saying it again. He also likes to play with the broom 😸
My middle didn't talk until closer to three. It was speech delay (though a few people did think Autism), he's almost six now. My youngest also had speech services, didn't speak much at two. I'm still hoping this is speech delay and nothing more. He's perfect either way and you are doing a wonderful job with all the kiddos! We loved sign language!
My one year old last yr was able to speak small sentences. No signs of autism. He was saying many words and even unwrapped all his Christmas gifts. After receiving three more vaccines, he got really Ill and hasn't been the same since. He is two now and I'm trying signing with him. There are pediatricians out there who have caught on to why many babies are getting autism today. One out of every one hundred children is a huge number to be put in the autistic spectrum today. They've learned that if you wait a while longer and not start the vaccines right away as the guidelines insist and you spread the vaccines out further apart, less of these kids are getting autism. I wished I knew that then. Since our little one got sick, we've stopped his vaccines temporarily to give his body a break. We've regained eye contact which he started seriously lacking after the last vaccination. He will get the remainder of his shots when I feel his body has taken that break long enough. Please do research. I'm not saying don't vaccinate. I'm saying as they are learning, your kids might have a better chance slowing down the time btwn vaccines and allowing your babies to build their immunity up first for a while after being born. After all, they do say our babies are protected by the moms immunity for quite a while after they are born.
I can't help with apps or lessons as I use auslan (Australian sign language) but even for nt kids it's a really good thing to do as they are able to use it a long time before verbal language is developed. I taught my daughter a few things from birth which meant she was able to communicate with my by 8 months and it made the toddler years a lot easier. Like others have said, start using it around the baby as well
My son had severe infant reflux from birth and aspirated at least 3 occasions before he reached 6 months. Medication did not help my son at all. The only thing that helped was keeping him upright after EVERY feed and also feeding him virtually upright. My son slept in his bouncy seat after every feed for at least 90 minutes then I could move him to his crib...but his crib was raised using books or bed blocks under the head of the crib. I also bought an infant wedge that went under his mattress to keep his head raised...
Also, there's an App called Sign 4 Me that is probably even more helpful...you just type in what you want to sign, and a 3D person demonstrates the sign. It cost $5 or $6, but way worth it!
Is it possible for you to take ASL classes? I'm sure there's gotta be some in your area for cheap. You can then learn along with Lex so that if he does have to rely on sign language, you all can talk and be proficient and then maybe even teach your older kids.
I just found your channel today and have been binge-watching your videos. You have a new subscriber! My brother has autism and he is almost 10. He sees a pediatrician and hates doing things like bathing, brushing his hair etc... Like noah. I think they are very alike. Is Noah or any of your kids picky Eaters if so is thier any advice u have to help with food struggles? P.s I have been trying to find a family that really shows the reality of what it's like. And I thank you for that. I love your videos keep up the great work.
awww lexie poo,he is so cute.i think the sign lanuage is a great tool for lexie he is doing so well with it.i no he is just frustrated that is y he screams.i love, love stir fry stephanie!i loved lonnie take over he is so funny.and were is lonnie jr,i miss seeing him?love u guys...
Great vlog! Have you considered the Gemini program? Whether he has ASD or not, he could really benefit from it. Alexander is off the charts adorable btw💛

The sign for food/eat is the hand shape for more but just one of them, to your mouth. You can modify it however you want though. Whatever works for you guys. Sorry if you already found out. I went away and now I'm backa nd trying to catch up. 😂
We used Baby Signing Time to teach my daughter sign language. It was an awesome program that made a huge difference.

The baby sign pro app is brilliant and it’s fun for them to watch the baby on the screen doing the sign too

Your curly boy reminds me of my 2 year old curly guy. He is also in speech therapy and likes to scream a lot. The kids are so cute! Fun vlog!
“That face is not gonna help you this time, I’m sorry I just hate to say it”😂😂
Lex’s hair is absolutely amazing!! I’m a new subscriber! Been binge watching your videos all day!! Love you guys! Sending love from Paige Texas 😌
Lex learned very fast :) at 11:38 he shows the sign "more" . I think he was not sure whether he likes it at first but then you can see he doesn't give the fork so easily away (you had to pull it from his hand)
There is never a dull moment in your house is there!
You guys are doing awsome!!! I appreciate how real this Is!
Signing Time videos are wonderful, fun and simple.
I just started watching and you have a great family. Noah is funny when he was talking to Lex.
It was kinda funny when you tried to teach him “eat” but he made up his own sign and put his hand in his mouth.
I’m 16 now I didn’t start talking until I was 4
Your a strong mama! ♥️ your doing an wonderful job! ♥️

Good job lex I know it's hard baby cause you want to communicate and can't it's going to be ok hugs to you dear lex you will get it
I feel like if he did the buckle himself he wouldnt have got mad. I love these videos.
If you have a public library you can try checking out books on sign language and also try looking up courses
His hair though!😍😍😍
I love it!!

Signing time is the best for kids. They have a baby signing time, too. Emmett is a lot like your son with saying words for little bit then stopping.
I taught my toddler to sign because we had friends in the deaf community. I never had formal lessons. We just used the signs for things as they came up. We used Baby Einstein My First Signs and then went to a higher level signing DVD.

He just signed more and said more! Yay!
This is a miracle & inspiration. Fantastic.
Try matching pictures with the object then sign and talk when pointing/matching. helps give concrete meanings rather than just associations! ☺

Omg the screeching scream, we are going through that currently, it's usually when he can't communicate with us

American sign language should be on the internet or in a book at Amazon. You may can just purchase by ebook. I can only remember the alphabet.lol
I took a beginner's sign language class last fall. The book used for the course was Sign Language Made Simple (second edition) by Edgar D. Lawrence.
Most welcome!❤
Also, there's an App called Sign 4 Me that is probably even more helpful...you just type in what you want to sign, and a 3D person demonstrates the sign. It cost $5 or $6, but way worth it!
We are starting sign language with our 3yr old. There is ton of videos on RUclips of baby sign language. My 3yr old has had speech regression.
Sign for baby's book it comes with flash cards. It is a picture book. You can order it on line or at most book stores.
"Look how cute my face is." Lol!
Doing such a great job. You are adorable.
Noah is so funny 😂
Check if you have a deaf school in the area you live in or see if you have a ASL class that you can take at your local college.
Is it possible for you to take ASL classes? I'm sure there's gotta be some in your area for cheap. You can then learn along with Lex so that if he does have to rely on sign language, you all can talk and be proficient and then maybe even teach your older kids.
try the Marlee signs app to learn more signs or The American Sign Language Dictionary
Have you tried Gemiini there's a 2 week free trial. There is a ad at the beginning of your vlog. Good luck with every thing.
I just found your channel today and have been binge-watching your videos. You have a new subscriber! My brother has autism and he is almost 10. I like this app called “my smart hands baby” the beginners version is $.99
I too have a 14 year old son with autism that has severe speech delay.
awww lexie poo,he is so cute.i think the sign lanuage is a great tool for lexie he is doing so well with it.i no he is just frustrated that is y he screams.i love, love stir fry stephanie!i loved lonnie take over he is so funny.and were is lonnie jr,i miss seeing him?love u guys...
Yay!!!! Go Lex!!!! 🤗
11:36-11:40 he signed. Hes so cute!😍😍
The Baby Signs Program, might be of help to Alexander and you!
Great vlog!
Have you considered the Gemini program? Whether he has ASD or not, he could really benefit from it.
Alexander is off the charts adorable btw💛
It looks like he’s doing great!
His speech therapy will really really help him !! Keep working with pronouncing words with his mouth and really sounding them out and he will learn !
What was that you made for dinner? Stir fry? Was it veggie?? Looked good lol
Aww. I love when Lonnie vlogs for you. Lmao
For some reason maybe lex will end up like Abbie. If he does then you have a nonverbal child, unless he will end up like Noah. Mahbe if he does end up like Abbie maybe hencan use the toby dyvanox thing?
Liam is so cute (and lex) 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 (🧩 for Noah)
Noah I’m your fan buddy!!!!! James and I love you!!!!!
There are sign language dictionaries online. Check out this link (it has a couple of options) www.deaflinx.com/ASL/online-asl-full-dictionary.html
Eating is pointing to your wrist and then making a movement to your mouth to eat. Look on Google.
Happy family, you can get some ideas on a family from Jacksonville that I fallow. They daughter has autism spectrum to. They vlogg call fatheringautismo they logo is 4 puzzle pieces.
I hope that can help you with handsome curly hair 😍💜
If Lex is able to write, it would make things easier
Mmmm what was the dinner your hubby made?! Looked so good!!!
Great job👍.I’m wondering how is Lex doing so far because my son almost had same behavior n we still not sure what exactly his condition is, Autism or speech issues only. I agree labels doesn’t matter Infact as u said, we parent have to do whatever possible for wellbeing of our kids but honestly I can’t help myself to come out of this confusion Is my son ok or not😬.
The woes of a two-year old and the forever war with face wipes. Those damn snot thieves.
I’m one of Noah’s fans!!
“Look how cute my face is “
SO CUTE
The sign for food/eat is the hand shape for more but just one of them, to your mouth. You can modify it however you want though. Whatever works for you guys. Sorry if you already found out. I went away and now I'm backa nd trying to catch up. 😂
Lex reminds me of my son.
Y'all's hands are full!!
11:38 doesn't he show "more" sign, just when you take his plate away? Ooo! :)
there are some great flash cards for sign language on amazon
My son is 2 and he also is non verbal, he only says mama and baba. He used to sign for more but he doesnt anymore.
