  • "With X-mas I found myself in the biggest and most notorious prison of South-East Asia, the Tihar Jail in New Delhi (India). Amidst many others I had to press myself to the prison bars to make myself heard. I visited a German girl who was sentenced to eight years imprisonment for the possession of a small amount of soft drugs. Although I did not know her beforehand she explained to me that she was so glad that I visited her because it made her feel 'human' again."In her talk, Femke Hofstee -- van der Meulen recaptures how this daunting experience in the Tihar Jail in New Delhi influenced her career. It made her think about the particular vulnerable situation of foreign nationals in prison and about the importance of opening up prisons to the outside world by carrying out visits.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
