  • The Real Story of Sowden House | Sowden House
This Frank Lloyd Wright Jr.-designed Mayan Revival mansion overlooks Franklin Avenue in the Los Feliz hillsides. The home's block-style front, inspired by a cave or old tomb's threatening but alluring entryway, isn't its most intriguing feature.
The home hosted bohemian gatherings for Hollywood's elite after being erected in 1926 for photographer John Sowden and his young family. In 1945, Dr. George Hodel moved into the home, sealing its status as the probable Black Dahlia murder site. By 1950, Dr. George Hodel was a leading suspect in Elizabeth Short's murder, and many true crime fans believe he committed it at this renowned Los Feliz home.
The mansion was abandoned many times in the late 20th century, making it even more eerie. Steve Hodel, former inhabitant, retired LAPD detective, and son of Dr. Hodel, says various observers have reported its hauntings. Steve says, "In the 1970s, [the Hodel housekeeper] told the Sowden House owner, 'This is a house of evil,'" Again, Edmund Teske pointed at the home and said, "Evil place. Philosophers, accountants, artists, and politicians played and payed there. There were murders. Evil location." Tamar, Dr. Hodel's daughter, reported seeing a young woman's ghost in the basement at the same timeframe. In 2016, Ghost Adventures presenter Zak Bagans visited the Sowden home with Tamar's daughter Fauna, who saw the same apparition.
