- A spectacular Dance performance choreographed by Benke Rydman capturing the internal and external struggles of refugees in the world.
The idea of Eurovision is to unite people, but in recent times we have been reading about a divided Europe, and refugees - something embodied in a powerful dance number in the first semifinal. "We want to get people to stop and think," said show producer Sven Stojanovic.
The performance, which has been named Grey People, is about how a group of people fleeing across land and sea, hoping to reach a safer place.
- We’re taking on a very serious subject in an otherwise glamorous entertainment show. That is a big challenge, but create an artistic and abstract interpretation of the current situation and the challenge that Europe faces today, says Sven Stojanovic as show producer of the Eurovision in 2016.
The directors Fredrik "Benke" Rydan and Jennie Widegren has choreographed 18 dancers and a child. All the performers on stage is dressed in gray and are identically painted with a gray face paint. Even the dancers' hair is gray.
Fredrik "Benke" Rydan explains the gray theme:
- For us, it is a gray mass without identities that come to our countries. So you have to wash away the gray, which become a filter. Once we have removed the gray filter, you can see a human being.
The clip was originally aired on May 10th 2016 in the first semi-final of Eurovision Song Contest 2016.

I teach English to teenagers in Mexico (13/14 years old) and I showed this in my class to kickstart a discussion about refugees. They all thought it was absolutely incredible and all of them were outraged when I told them that some countries had cut it out! I've seen it over and over but I still can't get over how moving the whole performance is. Gets me every time!
Simply beautiful!!! Best performance of semi 1. So much feelings, sincerity, hope and LOVE. I love the ending when the refugees reach for the audiens and they give them their hands to lift them over into the comunity. We are ALL stronger together helping eachother.
I cry for the father that lost his daughter on the sea in the performance. I'm embarest that we don't do more for all the children that need our help. 60 miljon people. Europe, Austaralia, USA! Cannada. We can be the HEROS of our time. Lets COME TOGETHER.
The last bit was so symbolic. I got chills from it. "The Gray People" are also people. We are one.

Directly when I saw the dance I thought "This must be Benke Rydman" :-) Really amazing! But he had help from his old Bounce-colleague Jennie Widegren.

Even I don´t agree with showing refugee crisis just in the "nice way" because there´s not just refugees who want to just live in new country with all respect and peace.. This performance is THE BEST what I´v ever seen.. Congratulation to choreographer and dancers!

What on earth were the BBC thinking of by not showing this?! Instead we had to endure a series of "comedy" interviews including Mel shoving her gob with meatballs. Pathetic BBC! It's insulting to viewers to think we'd not be interested in watching this and insulting to the hosts Sweden who had arranged this interval act and the dancers who performed it.

Yes I would say it was censorship cause of EU vote on 23rd June, asylum policy keep on being brought up here. Think showing a comedy about Swedish meatballs instead of this to be insulting for both sweden , and refugees for many reasons. Other countries take Eurovision seriously, yet we see it as a joke and then wonder why we get nil points. Think this act explains it all.
+Squarely i think it was just commercial, the broadcaster already had something made and wanted to show off their presenters and the performers. Still, no amount of bad comedy will ever compare to this performance :)

Malheureusement chez-nous en Italie, le gouvernement et la RAI ont décidé de le cacher au public en faisant simplement passer de la publicité.
