The Most Iconic Opening & Interval Acts of the Eurovision Song Contest

- After all the songs at the Eurovision Song Contest have been performed it is time for the host broadcaster to show their best efforts with the interval act.
We asked you what your favourite interval acts have been. Let’s take a trip back to some of the most memorable moments in the history of the contest.
In 1994 Ireland hosted the Eurovision Song Contest for the second time in a row. Ireland won the contest AGAIN at home ground but RTE also brought Riverdance to the stage. From that moment, Riverdance became a global phenomenon!
In 2010, when the contest was hosted in Oslo, Host broadcaster NRK had a very special surprise in store. Madcon performed ‘Glow’, and they got all sides of Europe on their feet for a then very popular flashmob.
The contest in 2010 was won by Lena and her song Satellite. Traditionally, the winner of the contest will also perform as an interval act during the next contest. Lena however, decided to return to the contest as a participant. She had a small roll in the opening act and later took her participating song Taken By A Stranger to tenth place.
In 2012, five Eurovision winners took the stage of the Crystal Hall in Baku. Dima Bilan performed a Eurovision medley together with Lena, Alexander Rybak, Marija Šerifović and Ell & Nikki.
This was not the only time a Eurovision medley was performed on the Eurovision stage. In 2017, when the contest was held in Kyiv the second semi-final was opened with a medley of Eurovision hits….Ukrainian style!
In 2014, Australia was put into the spotlight. Jessica Mauboy performed ‘Sea of Flags’ on stage in Copenhagen. Little did we now that we would see her again in 2018, as a participant representing Australia.
Later that night in Copenhagen in 2014 Eurovision winner Emmelie de Forest performed ‘Rainmaker’. She didn’t do this alone, all participants joined her on stage.
From the Vienna Boys’ Choir in 1967, to Onuka in 2017, opening- and intervalacts have changed a lot over the years.
This year, Madonna performed on the Eurovision stage. She was not the only big star to perform on the Eurovision Stage:
- Céline Dion in 1989
- Boyzone in 1997
- Aqua in 2001
- t.A.T.u in 2009
- Justin Timberlake in 2016
Måns might not be the king of pop, he has surely been ‘the king of intervals’ in the passed few years! Since he has won the Eurovision Song Contest he has been present in three editions. In Kyiv, he taught hosts Alex, Vova and Timur how to present the Eurovision Song Contest.
He got his Eurovision presenting experience the year before, when he hosted the 2016 contest in Stockholm together with Petra Mede. He not only performed his winning song, but also sung in the opening act ‘What is Eurovision’ and in the legendary ‘Love Love Peace Peace’!
Last May in Tel Aviv, Måns returned. Together with Eurovision legends Conchita Wurst, Eleni Foureira, Verka Serduchka and Gali Atari he took part in the Switch Song.

Måns and Petra just pushed the mark very high. They are very hard to beat with this. Their performances and comedy was just on point. A unique duo
But eurovision 2019 had a stronger message in their interval acts like a million dreams and

The jury overrates Sweden not for the song but so Petra can host again.
Edward Cotterell well in Sweden the international jury stands for 50% of the votes in the final, so its likely that the jurys fave Will be in ESC. Thats why They often give Sweden a lot of points.

@@dontmindme5163 True alot of the overall points comes from a jury but most ppl in sweden do not like that system atall. In 1 year i cant remember what year it was but a song called (Heart break hotel) was compleatly dominating the viewers vote but the jury placed it near the bottom so even with the highest points from the viewers ranking the song was placed 3rd i think. 1 look at the background or the style of the artist and lets say we were not suprised by the low jury score.

Love love peace peace is legendary. It's been the best interval act so far. Switch songs is brilliant idea. I wish we could see it every year.
Best interval act: riverdance. Worst interval act: Madonna.
Gotta say, Israel killed it with the intervals this year. And the one bad one wasn't even put together by them! (I will say it's a little facetious calling Celine Dion's opening bit in '89 an appearance by a big star - she would be one soon enough, but at the time, she was just doing the traditional bit where the previous year's winner comes back to promote their new song.)
T.a.t.u. is on a weird position also as they were on Eurovision before but they were already famous by then plus them being in Eurovision I don't think was referenced in the act
Give Edward af Sillén some recognition for writing Måns and Petras fantastic Script, as well as the lyrics for Love Love Peace Peace. He is a genius!

The Glow flashmob was everything. I was 18 then and I was in a dance group. We danced it off at every rehearsal. It brings me to tears every time I see this video or hear the song.
For next year's interval we need Duncan Laurence dancing to 'la Macarena' just like in his postcard.

Waleed Bin Alim i think Taken by a Stranger was too overappreciated. I don’t consider it a “song”, for me it’s more whispering than music. Satellite is catchy, fresh and Lena was cute and loveable.

Riverdance is THE most iconic interval act in the History of ESC in my opinion. Not a single performance takes that place as mind blowing as it was then! My goodness that 7 minutes of work of art still sends shivers back of my neck even now! Number one definitely, and always will be!

In general, 2016 defiantly had the best interval and opening acts. Love Love Peace Peace, What is Eurovision?, the Flag parade fashion show, the grey people, Justin timberland. Everything was just great

2019 was my favourite year with the opening & interval acts! Netta's remix of "Toy" in the first semi-final, Dana International with her amazing version of "Just The Way You Are", the performance by the Shalva band gave me goosebumps, the ESC stars switching songs and then all together with "Hallelujah", Netta's world premiere performance of "Nana Banana", I even loved Madonna's performance! Yeah, it sounded a bit wrong, but as a huge Madonna fan it was amazing to see her performing at the ESC!
Fair enough, though I preferred the 2016 Semi 2 opening ‘What is Eurovision’ and 2016 Grand Final interval act ‘Love Love Peace Peace’. They’re so unique and as someone who studies music, the lyrics are fantastically brilliant.

Israel showed the best opening act in 2019 while Sweden gave an amazing interval performance in 2016.

My fav interval act was Apocalyptica when Finland hosted in 2007. I've been a huge fan for years, but I didn't really use the internet much back then so I had no idea they'd be performing. Safe to say I screamed just a little bit at the TV when Mikko Leppilampi introduced them XD
